Chapter 4: Two Days on the Trail

Bowie---That night was really strange. Makeda slept on a top bunk over her parents. It did not go un-noticed that I chose a top bunk next to them. I was within a few feet of her but could not touch her! When Cholo turned off the oil lamp, the cabin was only lit by the moon light coming through the window. I saw Makeda sit up in the bed and blow me a kiss, before snuggling down in her sleeping bag. I tried to sleep but could only think of her. Her kisses! I had kissed a couple of girls before. Both were tourists staying with their parents at the resort. But their kisses were nothing like Makeda’s! When I was able to get to sleep, my dreams were of her!

I was having this dream, I was holding Makeda in my arms, we had just finished making love, when I was awakened by Cholo shaking my shoulder and saying it would be light soon and we needed to start the day. He lit the lamp as I dressed looking at Makeda sleeping peacefully. Is she dreaming about me? I walked out onto the porch and down to the barn as Cholo woke up the girls. Not much was said as we saddled the horses, then put the empty pack saddles on the mules. Back at the cabin the girls were dressed and had made breakfast. When Cholo and I walked in it was obvious that we had interrupted a private conversation because everyone got real quiet.

I sat across from Makeda and she winked at me! After breakfast we packed what we were taking with us, shut the door to the cabin and walked to the barn. I put our sleeping bags in one of the canvas pack bags and hung it on the lead mule’s pack saddle.

We rounded the steers up and started them on their way just as the sun made its appearance over the mountains. It was going to be a beautiful day!

This was the steers third day on the trail so there were no big problems. I trailed the mules along the left side of the herd while Jane led the way with Makeda across from me on the right side and Cholo pushing them from the rear. More than one time I was amazed watching Makeda. That girl can ride a horse! As is the custom on these drives, lunch was beef jerky and water, eaten in the saddle. As we neared Cold Spring Creek, where Camp #1 is located, I started dreaming about ‘bathing’ again with Makeda.

We had made really good time and arrived at Camp #1 just after 3pm. After the steers were stopped and allowed to start grazing, we cared for the horses and mules, then walked up to the cabin. Cholo said supper could wait and suggested we all go to the creek, together! I saw a look of disappointment cross Makeda’s face, I tried to hide my own disappointment.
