Chapter 5

A year passed and a sixteen year old and her sister were waiting in the square for the tour guide to appear. Their mother had announced that she categorically forbade them to go, and Sadie had announced that she categorically WAS going. She made sandwiches and bought cakes. She and Lottie and Peter were to have a picnic. Sadie had a small rucksack in which she had put a coat of hers, two jumpers, and some shoes for the girl and trainers for the boy. She had no idea what size they took, but that hardly mattered when the option was bare feet. As soon as Luke appeared, she told him that she wanted a room for the three children in the pub. Luke looked taken aback, then taken aback twice over. “Well, you can have my room. I think I have other things to do this year.”
