Chapter 3: The Principle of Suspicion
It happened on an ordinary Wednesday — as ordinary as a campus filled with physics majors could be. Sophia Morales, walking briskly across the sculpture garden, suddenly vanished from view with a startled cry.
The ground, it turned out, had other plans.
A maintenance pit, covered by a misplaced panel and a dangerously clever tangle of wires and rope, had turned itself into a perfect booby trap. When the rescue team pulled her out, she had a fractured knee and a broken heel. The universe, Adrian thought grimly, was repeating itself — though this time the equation was darker.

“Did you hear? Someone rigged the thing deliberately.”
“Yeah, they say it was ... artistic?”
And then, inevitably: “You think it was that Voss guy? The one obsessed with her crutches?”
Adrian discovered the rumor over breakfast, halfway through a bowl of cereal.
“Adrian, man,” his roommate said carefully, “if you’ve got a secret lair, now’s the time to confess.”
“I don’t!” Adrian protested. “My only lair is the physics lab!”
