Chapter 25: You Can Say It

We didn’t go to work the next day—not with Megan and her friend still being held. Everyone expected bail to be set at their arraignment, that they’d walk free by afternoon, but until it actually happened, we kept our distance. And of course, that’s exactly how it played out. The judge set bail at twenty thousand for each of them. Twenty thousand. They’d burned down someone’s home—someone’s business, someone’s entire livelihood—and that was all it took to buy their way out.

It was infuriating. But in the end, it wouldn’t matter.

We spent the day at Hana’s place instead, sorting through what we could, piece by piece. It was slow work—deciding what was essential, what could be tucked away for later, what we could stand to let go of. Hana had rented a small storage unit at her apartment complex. They were running a sale, she’d said. It wasn’t much—four by six, barely enough to turn around in—but it was climate-controlled, secure, and just big enough to hold the things we didn’t need every single day.

On Tuesday, we went back to work. Then Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Hana managed to convince Sheriff Collins to hire me for three extra days a week. The bookstore was gone, nothing but ash and memory, and there was nowhere else that could or would take me, not with the restraints. So, each morning I rode with Hana to the station, and each night we returned to her apartment together.

That became our rhythm. Simple. Steady. Grounded. And somehow, in the middle of everything unraveling around us, it felt like a lifeline.

And no one questioned it. Not the fact that we were all crammed into Hana’s tiny apartment, nor that Susan spent half the week with us while also staying with Andrew. On the days she stayed over, she’d just drive to Hana’s place later in the evening. She used our car; Hana and I used hers. No one blinked at the arrangements—logistical or otherwise.

Even the sleeping setup raised no eyebrows. Everyone knew Hana lived in a cramped one-bedroom, but she had a pull-out couch, and I suppose people simply assumed Susan and I shared that while Hana took her own bed. It was odd, yes, but in a way, I was grateful for it. People in this town were always eager to craft their own realities, to fill in the blanks with whatever made sense to them. And those realities, at least for this, worked in our favor.

Being in restraints didn’t faze anyone either. I was always in them at the station—hands cuffed at waist level—greeting visitors, answering phones, filing paperwork, jotting down notes, taking things from people ... listening to locals ramble about conspiracy theories and whatever oddities they were convinced mattered that day. And somehow, day after day, the sight of me moving calmly around the office with cuffs on never seemed to register with anyone. It simply became ... normal.

And that’s what we did.

I worked with Hana Monday through Friday at the station, while Susan helped Andrew at the leather shop. That arrangement made sense, too. Andrew had stepped in for us whenever we needed help at the bookstore, so of course Susan would be at his shop now, taking care of customers. She measured, she managed, she kept everything moving with that steady competence of hers, while Andrew and his father handled the work in the back.

She also started dressing differently—or more like she had at the bookstore. I was no longer guiding, or I guess I should say, dictating her choices; her outfits had taken on a life of their own, transforming her presence into something unmistakably charged. The pieces Andrew made for her weren’t just leather clothes—they were crafted to fit her body like a second skin. Snug, sculpted dresses that traced every curve. Pencil skirts so tight they shaped her stride into a slow, swaying promise. The constriction of the skirts and dresses, combined with stockings that caught the light as she moved and five-inch stilettos, made her utterly impossible to ignore.

And that was the point, I think. The clothes grounded her. Andrew knew they made her feel ... better—like the restraints, like the cuffs she’d worn. Like the sack. The jacket. The multiple blankets from years ago. They were a form of bondage—and that was exactly why he lined some of the more restrictive dresses and skirts with metal boning. They hugged her body, rigid and unyielding, holding her in place.

She wore them on the days she stayed at his place, because the restriction meant she couldn’t sit comfortably, which also meant she couldn’t drive. That way, he could help her out of the clothes later.

But I knew she dressed that way for him, too. Yes, the restriction was deliberate, but it was also intimate and undeniably sexy—a controlled tension she wanted, a sensation that reminded her of the trust and closeness they shared. She wanted him to watch her as she took those tiny, careful steps. She hobbled across the shop, each movement drawing his eyes—the leather clinging to her hips, the whisper of her stockings, the long, perfect lines of her legs in those heels.

She wanted that attention. She asked for it. Andrew certainly didn’t force anything on her, but she wanted it—wanted to be desired by him, wanted to be beautiful for him, wanted him to see her that way. She was ... finally seeing him. She was falling for him.

But it also meant that magnetism—the girl-next-door, sexy-librarian air she carried so effortlessly in those second-skin outfits—drew customers through the door, their attention captured as much by her presence as by the shop itself. It wasn’t a problem. No one would dare do anything other than look, not with Andrew and his father close by.

And that’s what they did.

The days passed, then weeks, then months. Life settled into a steady, careful rhythm, and—honestly—that terrified me. I’d been conditioned to expect that everything good would vanish without warning. Yet here we were. We had made it to January. Still standing. Still together. Still building something that, for the first time in a long time, felt like it might actually last.

“Earth to Anne,” Hana said, pulling me back into the present.

“Sorry,” I murmured.

“A right here?” she asked.

“Yeah,” I said, pointing as best I could, “where that white car is turning.”

“Okay,” she replied, shifting into the turning lane. “So ... this is the woman at the museum. And her husband?”

“Uh, boyfriend,” I corrected her.

I’d done my best to explain it all when we’d been invited a few days ago, but I could see why she was still a little confused. The Prescotts, I guess we’d started calling them. They were ... complicated.

“And Sophie’s the caregiver?” Hana added. “She takes care of Rebecca ... or, I guess, Becca?”

I nodded. “Yeah. Since the accident. And Becca’s had a rough pregnancy. Between the accident and complications, she’s mostly been bedridden. So, we’ll see how she is—probably ready to pop. I think the baby’s due soon.”

Hana pulled up alongside the curb.

“How’s this?” she asked.

“Fine,” I said. “I can get out.”

She walked around, opened the passenger door, and helped me out. Then she stepped back to steady herself.

“When I said I’d dress up for this, I didn’t think you’d put me in stilettos,” she said, closing the car door and clicking the lock, her hand gently gripping my arm—not so much for me as for herself. “I’m fine with the shorter ones, but five inches, Anne? Really?”

“I didn’t want you to feel out of place. And it is the weekend,” I reminded her.

Weekends were fair game. Usually, I had her in dresses with heels around four inches, but on our dates, she wore the five-inch ones. And somehow, no one batted an eye. Seeing Hana in a dress, stilettos, and pantyhose on a weekend—it should have drawn attention, but we also weren’t downtown anymore, not where everyone could see. That probably helped keep the gossip at bay.

Still, we went to the leather shop sometimes—to pick up Susan, drop her off, check in, whatever the reason. And sometimes, Hana would be dolled up for me. No one said a word about it. Probably because anyone who tried would quickly find a boot planted firmly where it didn’t belong, courtesy of Hana.

She glanced at me as we crossed the sidewalk, helping me slowly up the stairs. The short-chained leg cuffs gave just enough room for me to reach the next step, the cuffs riding up my ankles until they couldn’t go further.

And like she always did in heels that high, she leaned on me for balance. One of the reasons I liked putting her in them—she held onto me, and it was nice. Not to mention, she looked undeniably sexy.

That’s when Sophie came out.

“Hey,” she said, walking across the porch and hugging me. “I’m so glad you could come.”

“Thanks for inviting us,” I replied.

“This is Hana,” I said, doing the awkward hand-introduction thing while in handcuffs. “Uh ... duh,” I added, laughing. “You know Hana.”

“Hey,” Sophie said, hesitating between a handshake and a hug, but it ended up being a hug.

“Yeah, thanks for the invite,” Hana said. “This is really nice ... Anne’s told me Ben’s an amazing cook ... and well, I burn water, so...”

“Of course,” Sophie replied, chuckling. “We’ve been wanting to do this before the baby comes. Before Becca’s done cooking her.”

I laughed.

She led us to the door and opened it, inviting us in.

“Susan’s coming later?” she asked, glancing back.

“Yeah,” I said.

“Okay—no problem,” she replied.

“You’re early, so Isla and Noah haven’t come over yet,” she added.

“Uh, sorry,” Hana said. “Kind of a habit—leaving early for things. Seen too many accidents, I guess.”

“You’ll like Noah,” Sophie said, glancing back as she led us into the family area. “He used to be an EMT. You and him can swap stories.”

“Right,” Hana said, smiling.

As we entered, Ben was in the kitchen, waving, while Becca struggled to get off the couch.

“Ah,” I said, smiling at her. “You look beautiful. Oh my God, I hope I look like that when I’m pregnant.”

Hana glanced at me and smiled. She knew I wanted kids someday—just not exactly sure how that would work.

“I’m fat,” Becca said flatly. “Nothing fits ... well, tents. Those fit.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. It had been a while since I’d seen all of them together. I’d forgotten how much fun they could be. Well, outside of the moments when Becca’s trying to get you locked into restraints.

“You both look amazing. Those dresses are so cute. I remember winter dresses...” she said, looking at us. “Or just dresses.”

“This is Hana,” I said, introducing her.

“Hi,” Hana said.

“I’d hug you,” Becca replied, “but the doctor wants me to avoid people right now. Something’s going around ... though I think it’s really because this is contagious, and you might end up pregnant.”

Hana chuckled.

“Sophie says you’re almost done cooking the baby, so you’ll lose the baby fat soon,” I added.

“God, I hope so,” Becca replied. “But seriously, you both look amazing.”

“Thanks,” Hana said, glancing at me. “She did this to me ... including these.” She pointed down at her heels.

“I remember stilettos,” Becca said with a grin.

“Don’t mind her,” Sophie told her, stepping up and wrapping her arms around Becca, holding her belly. She hugged her gently. “She’s just moody.”

“Moody pregnant lady,” Becca replied. “I’ll have to come up with an excuse after the baby’s born.”

We all laughed as we settled into our seats.

“New table?” I asked.

“Yep,” Sophie replied. “A while back.”

“It’s huge,” I said.

“That was the point,” she replied.

Hana helped me sit down and then took the seat next to me. Sophie helped Becca.

“Food will be ready as soon as Isla, Noah, and ... is Susan coming?” Ben asked.

“Yeah,” I told him. “She’ll be here as soon as she can.”

“No worries,” he said. “Plenty of food. All good.”

“I wanted to bring some wine, but...” I told him, feeling bad we didn’t bring anything.
