Scene 20 — Lindsey

Lindsey was as angry as she’d ever been in her life. Mad at herself for making a stupid mistake by pushing Annie and for letting that little provocateur get under her skin, mad she had agreed to their cautious approach, and most of all mad at Cal for trying some white knight bullshit to keep her from getting dirty. She stalked away from the tractors back towards the camp, trying to control her raging emotions, oblivious to the others. Cal hurried after her.

“Are you ok?” Cal asked, waiting until they were out of earshot of the rest of the group.

“No, I’m not fucking ok you dipshit! I thought I had a real teammate. It turns out I have some dumbass yokel from whatever bumfuck town you came from who wants to treat me like a damn princess and thinks I can’t stand up for myself or make my own decisions!” Lindsey yelled.

“Uh, did I miss something?” Cal asked, clearly perplexed at her anger. That only infuriated Lindsey more.

“Do you remember the first fucking conversation we had yesterday? We agreed we were here to win. Yet here you are, worrying about my feelings and my fucking clothes for chrissake! Unlike you, I’m not a fucking moron, Cal. If those meatheads could get the fucking tire off the wheel there’s no reason we couldn’t have too. We could probably also have saved time spraying juice like Team 3. But noooo, fucking Master Strategist Cal over here is more concerned about me not getting a shitty t-shirt dirty. If not for your idiotic decisions, I wouldn’t have even had to push Annie to defend our spot!” Lindsey shouted, incensed.

“I was just trying to do what I thought was the best strategy,” Cal said, meekly. It was pretty clear he wasn’t being entirely truthful.

“Oh please, you’re pathetic. Look me in the eyes and say that,” Lindsey said.

Cal couldn’t, he just stared at the ground, ashamed. Lindsey actually felt a tiny bit bad, but she was too far down this road to change course.

“Jackass,” Lindsey said with disgust.

“You know, it’s not like I ordered you to do anything, Lindsey. You chose to go along with my suggestions,” Cal pointed out. “You are also the one who drew the damn penalty.”

Lindsey ignored that barb. “You know what? You’re right. That’s not a mistake I’ll be repeating. From now on I’ll be setting our strategy and you will follow my orders, are we clear?” Lindsey said.

“If that’s what it takes to get you refocused on the game then fine, we have no chance with you acting this way,” Cal said.

“Small dick little bitch, I can’t believe I let an asshole like you touch me,” Lindsey grumbled, regretting their earlier encounter. She turned away and stalked off in the direction Pierre and Laurie had indicated.

Lindsey’s logical side knew she was being unreasonable and unfair, but that side was not currently governing her words and choices. She continued walking towards the building they called the Old Mess Hall, ignoring Cal. He followed submissively, presumably hoping to avoid upsetting her further.

Lindsey and Cal were the first to arrive at the mess hall. A table had been set up in the small clearing in front of the building and had several laptops and some other equipment on it. A stylishly dressed woman she did not recognize was standing near it. Lindsey eyed her suspiciously.

“Hello there,” the woman said, “are you enjoying the camp?”

“Well I was until the last game,” Lindsey replied. “Are you part of the camp staff?”

“Ah yes, this game can certainly have its twists and turns,” the woman answered primly. “We’re actually the guests at the lodge that is the prize for winning, this week. Pierre and Laurie asked if I’d mind helping out with this challenge and I was happy to donate a bit of my time.”

“Oh cool how is the lodge?” Cal asked. “Despite our missteps in the last game we’re actually in first place right now, so we still have at least a shot.” He punctuated his statement with a look towards Lindsey.

‘Probably trying to get me to calm down, well fuck him, not happening,’ she thought to herself.

“Oh, well congratulations to you!” the woman said. “If you’re in first place at this stage of the game you two must be doing something right. As to the lodge, it’s truly wonderful. The pictures are beautiful but don’t do it justice. The scenery alone would be worth it, but the building itself is also so nice and comfortable. At this point you’ve figured out how challenging winning a session can be, and trust me, it won’t get easier, but I can assure you the prize is very much worth it.”

Lindsey didn’t know what to make of this woman. She spoke like some sort of high society lady, but if she was a former winner at AARC she must have some degree of gumption. She filed the thought away it for later consideration.
