Chapter 1: Innocent Fun

“Dane, can you show us how to spy on anybody coming into our rooms?” Lance asked.

“Why do you want to do that?” Dane asked. He turned around in his chair and glared at his two half-brothers. They were both younger and senior to him. They were the same age, being born two months apart, thirteen and fifteen months after Dane was born. In Dane’s eyes they were brats, always together and always getting into trouble and always blaming somebody else.

Lance, being two months younger than William, was the most senior of the three because his mother was the viscountess, making him the heir to their sire, Serge Galan, Viscount of Calgary Province on Sagan Prime in the Sagan system. Even with Dane being the oldest, he was also the most junior since his mother was a mere commoner concubine of the viscount. While William’s mother was also a concubine, she was the daughter of a baron, which placed William above Dane in the social hierarchy. Lance was destined to become a nobleman as soon as he turned sixteen, in a year’s time when he inherited the viscount’s secondary title of Baron of Midway. It was an honorary title, so Lance would not really have any responsibilities or real estate to manage. The title and associated medallion became dormant when their sire assumed his current title after the sudden death of their grandfather, the old viscount.
