Chapter 6: Talking to My Parents

Rowdy---That night we drove home to find that Grandma had waited supper for us. After our showers and a change into clean clothes. We sat on the front porch going over and over our plans. We kissed at the front door, then went inside. Grandma waited on me to say the Rosary.

Monday morning after breakfast we drove over to the coffee plant. An hour later a man showed up and picked up the coffee we had de-pulped yesterday and paid her. Until noon we watched Jose move her coffee around the concrete slab as we went over and over our plans. While we were eating lunch at El Pollo, the man at the garage called and said her truck was ready. After picking it up and following her home, we began packing to go to the ranch. I talked to Grandma.

“We’ll be gone for a week, but do not worry about Liesbet. We will stay with my parents and she will have her own room. I promise, it’s a business trip, nothing else.” Grandma smiled and gave us her blessing as we left for home.

Liesbet was accustomed to the curves and did not get car sick. We were able to talk the entire trip. I told her about my parents being scientists and wanting me to get an education. Three hours after starting the journey we were at the dam.

Liesbet’s mouth dropped open. She had never been this far into the mountains. She knew there was a dam, some type of resort for tourists and a dairy and cattle ranch, but she had no idea it was this big. We crossed the dam and I began pointing out things. Things like the riverboat that hauls the produce and beef, the feedlots and the lab where my mother and father work. Then we turned down the road to the compound. When I pulled up in front of my house she exclaimed, “You live here?”

“Yes, with my mother and father, an uncle and his wife and kids live next door.”

Mom came out on the front porch and welcomed us. Upon hearing us drive up, dad had come into the foyer and was waiting as mom ushered us into the house. After the introductions were out of the way I brought in our suitcases. I told them the story about how we met and what I had been doing for the last three days, mom asked about sleeping arrangements. I told them I was planning on getting Liesbet a room at the hotel.

“I’m afraid that is not possible. The hotel is full, besides we do not mind if you stay here.” My mom is very open-minded about sex.

“Liesbet will sleep in the guestroom.”

“Oh! I understand, I’m sorry I thought...”

“Dad, Liesbet and I have an idea. We would like to run it by you, if you have time.” He said he would like to hear it.

I looked at Liesbet and nodded. She stood and started. Years later I could still remember the way she explained our idea. An hour later Dad looked at mom. “After listening to this lady talk about coffee, I think I would like a cup. Liesbet why don’t you help GG in the kitchen.” It was obvious he wanted to talk to me alone!
