Chapter 3: Trying to Tell Mom and Dad I Am Not Going Back

Rowdy---I spent one night in the capital with my Uncle Dan (a civil engineer) and his wife (an attorney). I talked about college life and living in the States, keeping the conversation off what my plans were. I had no plans, I just knew I was not returning to college. I think I will probably end up helping out in the feed lots or maybe the gardens. I was sure I would find something to do.

The next morning, I caught the seaplane going to the ranch. It was full of tourists but no one I knew. When we circled the lake, I saw my parents waiting for me on the dock. I decided to wait a couple of days to tell them my plans. Okay, I chickened out!

I had been gone for almost four months, but you would have thought it was a lifetime. Momma could not stop hugging and kissing me, even as we hauled my two suitcases and carry-on bag down the dock and put them all in the truck. We drove over to the ‘compound’ where our house was built next door to Uncle Travis and Aunt Ana. After what could only be described as a feast, I spent the afternoon talking about living in the states and going to college. When mother left to use the restroom, Dad asked about the Red Roof Inn charges on his credit card. Momma walked back out just as I started to explain, he told me we would talk about it later.
