Chapter 4: Getting to know my family
That night I slept restlessly. Thomas is my son, I am sure of it. Now I have to figure out what I am going to do. At 7am the phone in my room was ringing. It was Thomas inviting me to have breakfast with him and his mother. I asked to speak with her, just to make sure it was okay if I joined them. It was and she told me to come on over breakfast would be ready in a few minutes. I dressed and called a cab. As Thomas opened the door, Lexie asked how I liked my eggs. I hugged Thomas and walked into the kitchen where Lexie stopped what she was doing, turned to me and kissed me on the lips! I looked back at Thomas, he was smiling! While she was finishing at the stove, she asked me to get the preserves out of the refrigerator. I opened the door and found a jar of strawberry preserves. It was not hard to find since there was very little on the shelves in the bottom part of her refrigerator. I opened the freezer, there was nothing in it!
Sitting at the table I asked Thomas how he like the steaks last night. He said he loved them! I told him we would have to eat there again. Then the questions started. He wanted to know his grandparents’ names, the names of his aunts and uncles, everybody in the family. He had a pencil and paper and was writing everything down as he drew a sort of family tree. Lexie came to the table with our plates then went back for hers.
“That’s all he talked about last night sitting in my bed. He finally dozed off and I had to carry him to his room. Then he was up at 6am wanting to invite you to breakfast. Thomas was listening as he wolfed down two eggs, three slices of bacon a couple of pieces of toast slathered with preserves and a glass of milk.
After breakfast I was sitting and helping Thomas with our family tree and drinking a second cup of coffee when I had an idea.
“What do you have planned for today?” I asked.
“Nothing really. The clinic is closed until the fourth of January.”
“How about we go to a mall and do a little Christmas shopping?”
Lexie looked at me and shook her head ‘no’ while Thomas was jumping up and down screaming, “Yes”.
“Rowdy, I have finished all my shopping for this year...”
“Lexie, I need to buy my son a Christmas present and I have no idea what it should be. Come on, what could be more fun than shopping on Christmas Eve?”
