Chapter 2: Meeting Lexie
Rowdy---I had to get away from Sue and her husband. I needed to think. I drove around the lake and up to Cold Spring Creek. I stopped the EV and looked up the side of the mountain at the coffee trees. There was a slight breeze blowing as I asked Liesbet what I should do! Rarely was the answer as clear as it was that day!
“Go see your son!”
I started the EV and raced to the house. If I hurried, I could make the afternoon flight back to the capital. Mom and dad were busy impregnating heifers, so I did not have to deal with them. I did leave a note saying I was going to the capital and I would contact them in a few days. I made the flight and upon arriving, I checked into a hotel. I was lucky, there was a seat on an international flight to Houston the next morning.
As I sat in the international lounge at the airport I wondered if I should call Lexie. I decided against it, fearing she might talk me out of coming. I wanted to see my son. Then I started thinking, what if the kid is not mine, Lexie might have had another lover in college. I’ll get a DNA test. Yes, that’s what I will do! Then, what if the kid is mine? Maybe I should have talked to Mom and Dad. My flight was called and I got on the plane. It was a four-hour flight, so I had plenty of time to think about what I was going to say.
First to Lexie, I remember her, she was tall, skinny and had the most beautiful grey eyes. Sue said I was Lexie’s first. I don’t know about that. Truthfully, I do not remember Lexie ever saying anything about her being a virgin. The next problem is the boy. Do I want to introduce myself to him as his father? What has Lexie told him about me? The pilot interrupted my thoughts announcing we were about to land in Houston.
It took an hour to get through immigration and customs then out to a taxi. I showed the driver Lexie’s address and asked if there was a hotel near her place. He said there was a Red Roof Inn close to her address. I laughed and told him that would be fine. An hour later I was checked in.
I showered and put on clean clothes, then went to the front desk. I had them call me a taxi. It was less than two miles to the apartment complex where Lexie lives.
I paid the taxi driver and walked up to her ground floor apartment. I admit, I waited a full minute before I knocked. From inside I heard a young boy shout, “Somebody is at the door.”
“Don’t open it, I’ll get it,” was the reply. I heard someone approach the door and I imagine look out the peep hole before opening it.
“Rowdy!” she screamed as she saw me standing there. I did not know what to say, my mind was drawing a blank. I looked passed her and saw a man standing in the living room.
“Lexie, if I have caught you at a bad time, I can come back. I don’t want...”
She grabbed me by the hand and pulled me into the apartment.
“No this is not a bad time! Dr. Fetterman this is Rowdy, an old friend from college.”
This ‘Doctor’ steps forward and offers me his hand. We shake.
“Doctor Fetterman stopped by to wish us a Merry Christmas, he was just leaving.”
“Well ... errr ... okay, right. Remember the New Year’s Eve party. It is going to be lots of fun.”
“I’ll think about it and give you a call, have a Merry Christmas.”
There was an awkward hug between them, then the doctor nodded at me and walked out the door.
“Rowdy, what brings you here?”
Lexie seems as nervous as me.
“I met Sue and her husband at a resort. They told me about...”
“Thomas, go play in your room.”
“Yes ma’am.” The boy walked down the hall and went into what I imagine is his bedroom.
“Rowdy, sit let’s talk.”
“I’m sorry if I interrupted something with Dr. Fetterman...”
She laughed. “He is just the last in a long line of men Sue has tried to match me with in the last couple of years. That one is definitely not my type. The man is 3 inches shorter than me, overweight, going bald and is in the middle of his second divorce.”
I avoided asking her what her type is, instead telling her about meeting Sue and being told about Thomas.
“Fishing? I’ve never known them to fish. Their vacations are usually to some beach in the Caribbean. They try to hook up with likeminded couples or one of the locals. She tells me all about their adventures.”
“Yeah, they offered, I refused. I don’t know what they expected. I mean...”
“You would not believe how many times they have ‘suggested’ how much fun it would be if I joined them on one of their vacations. I never have.” “Sue said you work for them?”
“In their back office. I handle their billing and insurance filings.”
“What kind of doctors are they?”
“Both are OB/GYN’s.”
“I guess he was your doctor for the birth of Thomas.”
“Oh God, no. That would have been too weird. I mean, him being Sue’s fiancé at the time. I had a woman doctor; she is still my doctor today. I can’t imagine letting Doug touch me.”
She shivered like she was cold!
“Tell me about Thomas.”
“He is a very smart kid. He could read and write before he started school. The nuns say he is a genius. I don’t know where he gets that. None of my family were genius.”
“My father is a genius with an IQ of over160. He has a PhD. My mother was a registered nurse who did not like working as a nurse. She went back to school and earned a master’s degree in biology. They work in a lab together. So, I think Thomas comes by it naturally. You said ‘nuns’, does Thomas attend a Catholic school?”
“Of course we’re Catholics. What religion are you?”
