Chapter 9
We did everything right. We converted one room in the house into a nursery. Liesbet exercised daily as per the doctor’s orders. She ate healthy and did not gain more weight than the doctor wanted. A month before her due date we flew to the capital and stayed with my uncle and his wife so as to be close to the hospital when it was time.
When her water broke, we were at the hospital in less than 15 minutes. I was allowed in the delivery room and helped her with the breathing exercises as we had been taught.
Suddenly there was a problem! I was ushered out the door as a team of doctors rushed into the room. I joined my family in the waiting room trying to answer questions I had no answers to. Half an hour later her doctor walked in. He looked upset.
“I’m so sorry. We did all we could.”
He started to hug me as he began crying.
“What are you talking about?” I screamed.
“Liesbet died trying to give birth to your son.”
“No!” I screamed as I pushed him away.
“The baby?” shouted my mom.
The doctor hung his head, shaking it, no. I fell to my knees sobbing. I kept asking God why he had done this to us. HE did not give me an answer.
I had both their bodies cremated and put into one urn. The funeral Mass was held back at the ranch. When the Bishop started his eulogy about how we do not understand God’s plan; I walked out of the church carrying the urn!
I was pissed! Pissed at God. Liesbet and I had said the Rosary almost every night of our marriage and this is the way God treats the people who believe in him? Well, fuck Him!
I took the urn with me as I drove up passed the ‘campamento’ and walked up into the coffee trees. Then I poured their ashes out into the wind! There Liesbet will find peace!
