Chapter 91

Before they could react, darkness swallowed their vision. Ethan’s hearing vanished too.

He tried shouting for Oliver, but with his senses gone, he couldn’t tell if his voice worked.

The Snake burned hot against his chest, slithering toward some unseen point.

Something approached in the dark. Ethan’s only move was to back away, heart pounding faster, mind racing for a way out of this sensory void.

Like prey caught in a web, struggling would only entangle him further. He needed to stand firm to face the crisis.

But hadn’t he reasoned Madam Arachne’s power was weakest by day, unable to strike?

What was happening? Where had he miscalculated?

A voice, dripping with venom, pierced the darkness from no clear direction. “This is all your fault.”

“You think you can ruin everything? Not a chance.”

“You, only you. I won’t let you live.”

Despite his deafness, Ethan heard her, his breath quickening, each inhale scorching his throat like fire.

Suffocation crept in. His eyes rolled back, cold sweat dripping, vanishing into the void.

Stars burst in his vision, pain stabbing his skull, consciousness slipping.

Just as he thought he’d pass out, a white light sliced across the darkness, like a blade cleaving a black orb.

His senses flooded back, murmurs filling his ears.

“You...” the voice gasped, now tinged with fear, as if dreading something.

“This is my domain. I do as I please. Get out.”

Her words grew choppy, fading.

A thunderous boom shook the space, followed by her piercing scream of pain.

“You ... you’ll pay for this,” she snarled, her voice ragged, fading with curses.

The darkness receded like a tide, the scene shifting.

“Buddy, you okay?” Oliver’s voice broke through, his face tight with worry as he shook Ethan.

“You went transparent for a second. Scared the hell out of me.”

Oliver’s explanation clarified things. Ethan’s “transparency” likely meant Madam Arachne had tried to forcibly pull him from existence.

Desperate, she’d broken her own rules to kill him.

Something had intervened, stopping her.

Ethan’s lips curved into an excited smile. Her desperation meant she feared what he might uncover at the Shrine.

After all this back-and-forth, he could finally corner the beast.
