Chapter 50
Rosie and Mrs. Bennett split their roles clearly: he went to demolish the carnivore dolls, while she stayed back to shield Ethan.
For some reason, they sensed Ethan’s importance; letting him die here might unravel everything.
Ethan stood stock-still, watching the battle unfold.
Having pulled Rosie and Mrs. Bennett onto his side brought a unique sense of security.
Yet he knew it wouldn’t be smooth sailing, since they were merely Bella’s created kin, facing off against a full-fledged Vile Gaze.
Sure enough, Mrs. Bennett’s massive frame made her a perfect target in front of the Vile Gaze, countless shadows piercing her body in an instant.
Though she wielded some shadow control herself, it paled in comparison.
Her size made her movements cumbersome; even swinging the chain to sever shadows couldn’t fully block the assault, let alone restrain the foe.
The shadows sliced like swift blades, forcing her back as she flailed helplessly.
Still, whenever a shadow darted toward Ethan, she’d throw her body in the way, denying the Vile Gaze any chance to harm him.
But the protected Ethan felt no relief; his expression grew graver by the second.
Mrs. Bennett’s form bore countless gashes, wounds gaping like bottomless voids, her presence fading into nothingness.
Unlike her fight with Lucas, where she’d rebound from any blow, the shadows eroded her very existence.
Glancing toward Rosie, the situation looked equally dire.
His guess proved right: Bella’s kin could indeed damage the dolls, with several already shredded on the floor.
But Rosie struggled too, shadows harrying him from behind as the Vile Gaze diverted attacks his way.
His misty form offered some resistance to the incursions, but optimism waned; Ethan clearly saw several shadows spearing through his chest from back to front.
The fog around him thinned transparently, teetering on vanishment.
Ignoring his own injuries, Rosie tore into the dolls relentlessly, demolishing over half in short order.
Suddenly, the Vile Gaze let out a piercing wail, clutching its head as it dropped to the ground, flickering between solid and ethereal.
It went berserk, directing shadows furiously at Rosie.
Just as they neared impact, a huge silhouette interposed itself before him.
To let Rosie finish, Mrs. Bennett used her own body as a barrier.
Her arms too mangled to lift the chain, this was her only way to buy time.
But after, overwhelmed by the grievous wounds, she staggered as the shadows withdrew, collapsing in a heap.
Knowing Mrs. Bennett lay gravely hurt behind him, Rosie didn’t glance back. Despite his own severe damage, he shredded even faster.
In this moment, Bella’s kin, her “parents,” poured everything into reviving their “daughter.”
Silence blanketed the room, Ethan’s heart pounding wildly. Mrs. Bennett’s status unknown, but clearly unable to protect him anymore.
Rosie neared the last three dolls; at his pace, ten seconds tops.
