Chapter 40
Ethan picked up Rosie’s research log and started going through it.
By now, he’d pieced together the histories of Bella and Mrs. Bennett, but Rosie’s own story remained murky.
Perhaps this journal could shed light on what lay behind it all.
[Log One]
[My name is Rosie. If you’re reading this, it probably means I’m already dead.]
[I have no one to blame but myself for ending up like this. After all, I’ve done things no human should ever do.]
[If anyone finds this log, I beg you to save my wife and daughter. At least keep them out of this mess.]
[I was a genetic engineer in biology, meant to advance science for humanity’s benefit, until I met a mysterious woman who called herself Mrs. Blackwood. She upended everything I knew, showing me powers that left me stunned, even glimpses of another world filled with bizarre creatures.]
[She explained that this other realm teemed with intelligent, powerful races intrigued by human civilization, and she invited me to join her for an exchange.]
[Personally, the idea fascinated me, a mysterious world ripe with potential discoveries that could change lives, full of new possibilities I yearned to explore.]
[But it was also completely foreign and unknown, and unknowns breed fear and danger, so after some thought, I turned her down.]
[Mrs. Blackwood didn’t seem bothered. She said nothing more, but after refusing, I couldn’t shake a twinge of regret.]
[From then on, she’d pop up now and then, chatting about the wonders of that world, its incredible diversity of species, stirring my curiosity until I craved to know more.]
[Before I realized it, I’d come to see her as a confidante, someone who fed my thirst for knowledge, and in the process, I let my guard down completely.]
[Finally, one day, I couldn’t hold back anymore and asked to visit that world myself. What happened next haunts me to this day.]
[Mrs. Blackwood smiled, the same intellectual and graceful expression as always, but to me, it twisted into something sinister, the look of a devil who’d just won.]
[A chill ran through me as I realized I’d made an irreversible mistake, but it was too late.]
[When I came to, I found myself in a place called Blackwood Castle, the start of my forbidden descent.]
Reading this far, Ethan felt a spark of clarity.
Mrs. Blackwood played a pivotal role in each family member’s account.
Despite her immense power, she seemed bound by restrictions in other worlds, unable to drag humans into hers without consent.
Whether Rosie, Mrs. Bennett, or Bella, the common thread was gaining their agreement before succeeding.
