Chapter 35
Mrs. Bennett didn’t buy it for a second, she knew him too well, he was a terrible liar, and his evasive, hesitant demeanor screamed guilt.
He had loved his previous research role and wasn’t one to job-hop lightly, so something major must have happened.
Determined to uncover the truth, she called out his lie and pressed for details.
In their marriage, whenever she asserted herself, Rosie, ever the protective husband, would back down, one reason they rarely fought.
But to her surprise, this tried-and-true approach failed.
Instead of yielding, Rosie lost his usual gentleness and exploded in anger, startling her deeply.
Feeling both hurt and furious, they argued fiercely that night and parted on bitter terms.
The next day, she found he had left the house, destination unknown.
After that, Rosie vanished as if he had evaporated, leaving her frantic and heartbroken.
She worried about what had befallen him and feared he might still be sulking from the fight.
His phone went unanswered, and inquiries with friends, family, and relatives yielded nothing, as if he had truly disappeared.
Just as she considered reporting him missing, a strange woman approached her at the hospital, introducing herself as Mrs. Blackwood and claiming she could reveal her husband’s whereabouts.
She had long golden hair and striking blue eyes, her every movement exuding refined elegance, instantly marking her as someone from high society.
At first, Mrs. Bennett eyed the stranger warily, yet she also sensed the woman might hold real information, given how few knew of the disappearance, making a prank unlikely.
Her main fear was that this involved some criminal group that had kidnapped him.
What followed shattered her worldview, as Mrs. Blackwood casually summoned a swirl of mist.
Before Mrs. Bennett could process the foggy spectacle, the mist took on color and formed an image.
Then she witnessed a horrifying scene: a bizarre room filled with crimson flesh.
The space was dimly lit, with faint phosphorescence emanating from unknown organisms on the walls, casting an eerie, mysterious glow over everything.
The walls were coated in thick membranes resembling living skin, clinging to the stone and pulsating constantly, riddled with pores that oozed viscous fluid, dripping to form slick puddles on the floor.
At the center lay a massive hunk of flesh, with a man asleep atop it.
His weight had sunk him partially into it, and the mass writhed as if alive, appearing to slowly consume him.
Mrs. Bennett recognized him instantly as her husband, and in a rage, she demanded to know where Mrs. Blackwood had hidden him and what she had done.
