Chapter 34

What was that? Could it be Lucas?

Ethan fell into deep thought. He had seen Lucas step into the closet with his own eyes, yet what emerged now was a creature resembling a massive bear.

That suggested Lucas might actually be a monster too, one that had infiltrated their group from the start.

This explanation made some sense, after all, since he had never quite fit in with the other guests from the beginning, and his composure seemed unusually strong for someone who had just stumbled into this bizarre world as a human.

Still, certain aspects of his behavior and motives didn’t add up, like why he would blend in with humans instead of launching an outright attack on them.

Or why he had fought the monsters in the castle, unless they belonged to different factions.

With so little information, Ethan couldn’t speculate further for now.

“What kind of Blessing are you?”

Lucas’s earlier question resurfaced in Ethan’s mind, and a spark of realization flickered in his eyes, perhaps indicating...

Ethan started piecing things together, but this wasn’t the time to dwell on it.

Right now, two enormous monsters were locked in combat, both massive in size and brimming with raw power.

The bear-like creature moved with savage fury, gripping Mrs. Bennett’s right hand to prevent her from wielding her chain, while its other hand pounded relentlessly at her head.

The sheer intensity of the impacts revealed just how severe the blows were.

Yet no matter how many punches landed, Mrs. Bennett remained unchanged, her eerie smile fixed in place, her face showing no signs of injury, let alone any blood.

She seemed indestructible, like a tumbler toy that refused to topple, her eyes gleaming with a bloodthirsty hunger.

As time passed, the shadow at her feet began to spread, darkness creeping across the room like ripples in black water after a stone had been tossed in.

“Roar!”

The bear monster suddenly let out a guttural bellow, its body appearing to erode under the influence of Mrs. Bennett’s shadow.

Cuts appeared on its limbs and skin without warning, blood starting to flow.

Sensing danger, it shoved Mrs. Bennett away and fled the room, sending her crashing to the floor, where the dark shadows pooled behind her and propped her up in an unnatural way.

Ethan’s heart raced wildly, now that Lucas was no longer the target, he wondered if Mrs. Bennett might turn her attention to him next.

Fortunately, it seemed Lucas had drawn her aggression, so she didn’t linger in the room but instead dragged her chain step by step toward the door.

Soon, the footsteps faded into the distance, and Ethan, hiding under the lab table, finally exhaled in relief, listening carefully until all was silent before crawling out.

He crept cautiously to the doorway, pressed his ear against it for a moment, then quickly shut and locked the door before returning to room 205.

For the moment, he set aside the matter of Lucas and Mrs. Bennett, shifting his focus to the handbook he had obtained from her room.

He had explored all the accessible rooms so far, and this was the only clue he had found.
