Chapter 117

Julian’s journal was much like Ethan’s, sketching out the basics of the green jumpsuits, purple jumpsuits, and guards.

What baffled him completely were the phenomena of the tide and The Fire of Judgment.

Especially The Fire of Judgment—it shattered the notion that guards meant safety. If they couldn’t be trusted, the threat from the purple jumpsuits skyrocketed, though The Fire of Judgment likely outranked the convicts.

Right now, the priority was figuring out how to escape its clutches.

He slipped the journal into his coat and headed for the door when Leo’s voice cut through from outside, laced with panic.

“Julian! Julian! Get out here, quick.”

“Something’s off. A pack of purple jumpsuits is heading our way.”

“And the guard’s vanished—who knows when.”

A pack?

Julian frowned, puzzled. Purple jumpsuits moving in groups suggested a shared target. But from what he’d seen, they were just bloodthirsty beasts, driven by instinct.

If they were after the Testers, with everyone scattered, they’d split up to hunt individually. Why cluster and zero in on him?

Coincidence? Or some hidden force at play?

No time to ponder. Julian rushed out, and the instant he crossed the threshold, the journal vanished from his chest.

His sharp instincts kicked in: this Dreamplay world didn’t let you carry or destroy intel like that.

“J-Julian, we gotta run,” Leo stammered. “Find a guard, and we’re safe.”

He eyed the approaching purple jumpsuits, face twisted in fear, but he didn’t bolt and leave Julian behind.

He knew his odds were better sticking close to Julian, who had a Blessing.

Julian scanned the scene, brows knit.

Oscar led the charge, weapons slick with blood, all of them closing in slow and deliberate.

Their faces were manic, eyes gleaming with a chilling mix of greed and murder.

They didn’t rush, savoring the hunt like cats toying with mice, each step drawing them nearer.

Hmm?

Catching their stares, Julian glanced at Leo and pieced it together.

These purple jumpsuits were fixed on him alone—the proof was how they ignored Leo standing right beside him.

Coming for him? Why?

Julian was sure he hadn’t broken any rules; no reason for them to target him.

Could it be Clara’s partner pulling strings from the shadows?

He dismissed it quick. Humans couldn’t command Dreamplay monsters. Sure, some struck deals with the big shots behind the curtain to control creatures, but that was endgame stuff—not something you’d pull off with early intel.

“Run.”

He motioned Leo toward the opposite direction, a plan already forming.

“There’s a fork ahead. You go left; I’ll take right. Split up.”

“ ... What?”
