Chapter 109

“I’m Oscar Reed, more or less their leader,” the heavyset man said, introducing himself with a warm grin before turning to Henry. “Who’re these folks?”

His round face, creased with a kindly smile, might have seemed approachable on the outside, inviting a sense of familiarity.

But here, in the shadowed depths of the underwater Prison, his purple uniform was splattered with blood from brutalizing green-clad prisoners.

The contrast made him chilling, his friendliness a mask that deepened the surrounding dread.

“They’re guests sent to experience Prison life,” Henry replied. “Not your rehabilitation targets. You can’t touch them under our watch.”

“Got it, from the higher-ups...” Oscar nodded, his smile unwavering, as if Henry’s words barely registered.

He turned to the group, eyes narrowing to slits, hiding whatever stirred beneath. “We’re rehabilitating these green prisoners. Since you’re here, want to try your hand at fixing them? It’s quite the thrill.”

The Dreamwalkers knew what “rehabilitation” meant—wielding those torture devices against prisoners.

Should they go along?

As Testers, was joining in part of the experience?

The blood-soaked remains on the floor were enough to keep them from the Rehabilitation Tools, let alone killing others.

Screams echoed from green-clad prisoners—some boiled in oil, others crushed flat, limbs severed, a living portrait of hell.

The group stood divided in thought; Ethan and Julian stayed silent.

Both had their theories. As Testers, they held some privilege, evident in the guards’ protection.

They weren’t required to wear uniforms or face rehabilitation.

Joining in wasn’t mandatory, and refusing wouldn’t hurt them.

Seeing no one take the bait, Mason, hungry for intel, played it smart, addressing Henry instead of Oscar. “Is this something we have to do?”

Henry shook his head. “It’s up to you. We don’t care either way.”

A bespectacled middle-aged man, Leo Vance, spoke up, his voice shaky. “If we don’t join, will we be punished?”

Henry looked surprised, almost amused. “Punished? You’re not prisoners. Why would we?”

His words confirmed Ethan and Julian’s suspicions.

Others in the group exhaled, relieved. The idea of torturing others clashed with their instincts, no matter how hardened they were.

“Guess the Testers aren’t interested,” Oscar said, his tone tinged with mock disappointment.

With two people already asking questions safely and Henry proving easy to talk to, the group sensed an opening.

Why not pry more from him while he was here?

“Why do you rehabilitate the green prisoners? Is it a Prison rule?” asked Simon Pierce, a soft-spoken young man.

Oscar grinned wider. “Why? Do we need a reason to fix Convicts?”

“Everyone here’s guilty of grave sins. How can they leave without cleansing their souls?”
