Liam wasn’t one for many words, but he shielded her from the barbs of others who sought to mock her. Despite his cold and detached demeanor, he would always pause after a few steps when she trailed behind, ensuring she could catch up.
Liam had woven so many illusions around her that by the time reality came crashing down, it was far too late...
“Evelyn, I never intended to hurt you. The reason Liam treated you kindly was only because I told him not to upset you. I never imagined you’d still end up heartbroken.”
“Evelyn, you’ve been with him for an entire year now. Can you give him back to me? You’ve taken so much from me. Isn’t it time you paid the price?”
It was the first time Evelyn had ever slapped Mila in anger, and fatefully, Liam walked in just as it happened, sowing seeds of mistrust between them.
Evelyn prided herself on her resilience, believing she could endure anything. But what she couldn’t stomach was the truth: Liam had never loved her. The affection and the connection had been nothing but her own nauseating delusion...
Evelyn couldn’t suppress the wave of nausea rising in her throat. When Liam pushed open the door, the sight that greeted him froze him in place.
Her already fragile frame was curled tightly on the balcony, her gaze hollow and distant, reminiscent of days long past, but worse, infinitely emptier, devoid of any trace of warmth or life.
For reasons unknown even to himself, Liam clenched his fists in discomfort before striding forward to grab her arm and yank her upright. “Get back to bed! Are you trying to flirt with death again?”
The wind whipped fiercely across the balcony. At first, Evelyn remained unresponsive, but then she began thrashing wildly. “Let go of me! Don’t touch me!”
Liam seized her chin, his large hand gripping her delicate face, fury blazing in his eyes. “What’s gotten into you? Don’t want me to touch you? Then who do you want touching you? Rafael?”
A sudden realization dawned on him. “Evelyn ... you heard that, didn’t you?”
