Chapter 27
Scarlett was struck dumb, utterly unable to respond. Robin, who had just woken up, rolled over and said in a cold tone, “Scarlett, I suggest you tread carefully. If they hadn’t been protecting you, you’d be gone by now. Think twice before acting next time.”
“What are you, exactly? Who gave you the right to lecture me?” Scarlett snapped back, her anger flaring as her thoughts raced chaotically. Her words grew even sharper: “I’m Mila’s closest confidante, someone Sir has always held in high regard. How could I ever compare to that wretched Evelyn? As long as I don’t cross the line, Sir will undoubtedly overlook my actions!”
Robin simply closed his eyes and ignored her. Scarlett couldn’t fall asleep either, so she got up and called Mila.
The call was answered only after what felt like an eternity. Scarlett recounted every detail of what had happened at the villa, especially the part about the servants being dismissed. Her upper lip quivered against her trembling lower one, and her voice faltered as she spoke: “Mila, why would Mr. Drake suddenly stand up for Evelyn? Doesn’t he despise her above all else?”
Mila remained silent for a long moment before finally speaking in a slow, deliberate tone: “Just follow my instructions. Leave this side to my mother.”
At the mention of Mila’s mother, Scarlett’s face lit up with a glimmer of anticipation. That woman was not someone to mess with, and if she decided to step in, Evelyn’s life would become unbearable.
With that thought in mind, Scarlett hung up the phone with satisfaction and returned to bed.
For several days, Evelyn didn’t wake up. If it weren’t for her steady breathing, she might as well have been dead.
Liam, feeling increasingly irritated, chose to stay at the office. When he finally returned home, the servant greeting him mentioned, “Mr. Drake, these past few days, Ms. Clarke has had a visitor, a friend who insists on seeing her. We turned him away as per your orders, but he hasn’t given up. He lingers near the gate every day.”
A friend?
Liam’s brows instinctively furrowed. After everything that had happened two years ago and under his oppressive control, how could Evelyn possibly still have any friends?
