Chapter 24
Liam hesitated briefly, memories flooding back of the first time he encountered Evelyn. She was at a grand banquet in the school hall, exuding grace as her fingers danced over the piano keys with the delicacy of butterflies in flight, leaving an unforgettable imprint on his mind.
But now, her hands were ravaged by chilblains, the flesh decayed and twisted. How could he reconcile this image with the poised pianist she once was?
A sudden constriction gripped his chest, stealing his breath.
A knock echoed from beyond the door. Liam’s dark eyes refocused, and he tightened his grip on his own hands.
He must be losing his mind to pity Evelyn! Her actions were entirely self-inflicted. Had she not been consumed by jealousy towards Mila and conspired with his father, Mila would never have endured such disgrace, nor would Evelyn be reduced to this wretched state!
Born despicable, she deserved every bit of her fate!
“Enter!” Liam’s voice carried his irritation, and after a pause, Robin stepped in.
In her hands, she carried a steaming bowl of nourishing broth, addressing Liam, “Sir, the kitchen has prepared this restorative soup for Ms. Clarke. Please ensure she consumes some.”
With that, Robin set the bowl upon the table and retreated.
Liam gazed at the broth, then lifted it after a prolonged silence. It radiated warmth. He observed Evelyn, sitting in contemplation for an extended period before using a spoon to offer her a taste.
Despite her illness, Evelyn’s obstinacy remained unchanged; whatever entered her mouth was promptly expelled.
Liam’s temper flared. Clasping Evelyn’s jaw, he forced it open and pressed a spoonful of the warm liquid past her bloodless, cracked lips.
Suppressing a surge of primal instinct, Liam drew Evelyn into his embrace.
