Chapter 20

Liam’s fury blazed. “Evelyn, why are you behaving this way?”

“I’m sorry...” Evelyn’s actions were instinctive, almost automatic. When she finally came to her senses, a throbbing headache overwhelmed her, and she sank back down onto the seat. But this time, Liam no longer rested his arm on her shoulder, it hovered behind her instead.

To the camera, it appeared as though he were still holding her close.

“Alright, let’s begin the interview,” the reporter said, flipping through the script before addressing one of the prepared questions. “Ms. Clarke, you’ve struggled with mental health issues in the past. Are you in a stable condition now?”

Liam nodded firmly. “Yes, she’s stable. That’s exactly why I decided to bring her home. After two years apart, I’ve missed my wife terribly. Thankfully, fate has allowed her to return to me.”

“Ms. Clarke,” the reporter continued, “how do you feel about Mr. Drake’s eagerness to bring you out of the psychiatric facility? Does it touch you deeply?”

Evelyn’s mind buzzed with confusion, sharp pains stabbing at her temples. Her fingers dug into her knees as she frantically replayed the reporter’s words in her head.

How did she feel? What was she supposed to feel?

“I ... I...” She struggled to recall the scripted response but couldn’t grasp it, her thoughts felt scattered, like shards of glass cutting through her concentration.

“Evelyn, what are you doing?” Liam snapped, his patience wearing thin. He grabbed her chin forcefully. “Are you doing this on purpose?”

“No, I’m not...” Evelyn stammered, her vision swimming.

“Let’s try again,” the reporter interjected smoothly, offering a polite smile to the camera before restarting the question. “Ms. Clarke, how do you feel about Mr. Drake’s determination to bring you out of the psychiatric facility? Does it move you emotionally?”

“Yes, it moves me deeply,” Evelyn began haltingly. “When I chose to be with him, it was because of his integrity and devotion. He ... he helped me pull myself together when I thought I’d fall apart. I...” Her voice faltered again, panic rising in her chest as sweat pooled in her palms. The more she tried to focus, the further the answers slipped away.
