Mabel Laenas (Rila Faerson)
The morning light slanted through the windows of our library, painting pale gold across the dust motes and spines of old tomes. The fire had been laid low, leaving only a whisper of embers, but the room smelled faintly of smoke and parchment—a scent that clung to the place like memory itself.
All four of us sat at the table in the library. We needed to talk about the journey of going to the Golden Mountains, a journey that will be long and full of unknown variables. Dealing with us, those variables can change all the different.
“The main goal is to get to the Golden Mountains,” said Solomon. His voice carried in the echoing hush, stern and steady. He sat next to me; one hand pressed against the edge of the table as he leaned forward in his chair. “Find the waters and return home. With it, we are free of the darkness within us.”
Richard leaned back in his chair, eyes and ears focused on what Solomon was saying. He tapped his fingers on the table as he leaned forward. “Free, yes, but the road is perilous, as we all should know. The Golden Mountains lie slam in the middle of the kingdom and the Northern Fields. We can’t all go gallivanting after these waters.” His eyes slid and landed on each of us, bringing his concerns to us through his stares. “If something, may the gods forbid, happens to us, the estate and everyone on it will be in ruin as well.”
He did have a point. It’s too much risk if all of us go. While we mind are focused on the waters, we must also remember that we are now lords and ladies of an estate and tenants that have made our land their home. We can’t jeopardize their security for our own personal goal.
“Then only two must go,” Bridget said. She sat beside Richard. As I looked at Bridget this morning, the sunlight really gave her a nice glow. She radiated as if she were a saint just returned from the dead.
“But which two? Who will go and who will stay?” Richard added.
The question remained heavy over us as silence took over the room. I looked from brother to brother, then to sister, and all at once the library’s familiar smell of vellum and ink felt suffocating. We always did big things together. Especially something like this. But we had other things and people we had to worry about now.
“I believe I should be the one who goes,” I heard myself say, voice low but sharp with authority. “Like you all said, I’m our family’s personal diplomat. We’re going to have to use diplomacy on this journey.”
Solomon, Richard, and Bridget all nodded in agreement. One down. Now, who’s the second person who’s going to be joining me?
“I can already say that I’m not going,” Bridget said as she leaned back in her chair. “The Manse really did a number on my body. I wouldn’t be in any shape or good use to anybody on this journey.”
“Make sense,” Richard said.
“I think Richard should go with you,” Solomon said. “He’s our best fighter out of the four of us, and you’re going to need some muscles on this journey. If that’s okay with you, brother?”
“I couldn’t say it any better myself,” Richard smiled. “So, sister, will you have me as your companion on this perilous quest of ours?”
I smiled. “I will gladly have you, Richard, on this perilous quest of ours.”
“It’s settled then,” Bridget said. “Richard and Mabel will travel to the Golden Mountains and retrieve the waters, while Solomon and I will remain to keep the estate running smoothly.”
We nodded in agreement.
“Richard,” I said, rising from the chair, “prepare and take what you need on this journey. We are riding out at noon.”
“As you wish, captain,” he grinned as he and Bridget left the library.
I know my older brother can be goofy and mischievous at times, but when truth comes to show, he is a courageous man. I did feel safer having someone like Richard’s fighting skills at my side. I wasn’t a bad fighter myself, but Richard is great with swords and close combat.
I felt Solomon’s hand touch my hand on the table. A warm feeling brushed through me. I turned to see him rising from the chair, our eyes staring into each other. “Are you sure you’re up for this?” he asked.
“Do I have a choice?” I said. “We need these waters. We need to be free of this burden that has caused our family so much pain and unwanted consequences. I may be a little scared, but that only shows that what I am about to do is worth the risk.”
“I’ll be waiting for your returns,” Solomon said. “We all will.”
He leaned in and gave me a passionate kiss. I leaned into the kiss, embracing him. I needed this. That one small boost of passionate confidence to get my courage and determination running at a high peak.
“Thank you,” I said, breaking the kiss.
“For what?” Solomon said.
“For giving me a small piece of confidence,” I said. “You don’t know how much I need it.”
He smiled. “I will do anything for you.”
I smiled as I headed out of the library. I had a perilous quest to undertake, and I needed to prepare, especially getting the appropriate attire.
Now, what does one wear when going on a perilous quest?
Bridget Laenas (Sesa Faerson)
Richard stood in the middle of his room, shirt unlaced at the collar, sleeves rolled up, his chest gleaming faintly with the sheen of effort as he fastened his sword belt over a stack of carefully chosen tunics. His boots, polished enough to catch the light, waited by the bedside.
I leaned against the carved doorframe, arms crossed, watching him with a smile I couldn’t quite suppress. My brother had the same gift I did: a natural magnetism, a way of drawing eyes like moths to a flame. He knew it too. Gods, he preened like a peacock even when he was only folding cloaks.
“You do realize,” I said, “that you can’t flirt the Golden Mountains into packing themselves for you.”
Richard turned, a grin playing at the corner of his lips. His shirt clung to his chest as he pulled a leather jerkin over it, the kind adventurers wore in songs. His sword belt lay across the bed, polished steel gleaming as though eager for the road ahead. “Ah, sister,” he replied, voice warm and teasing. “If mountains had daughters, I’d have them carrying my satchel by now.”
