“ ... I’m scared of thunder.”
Theo rolled right into Emily’s bed, repeating the words in a soft, hoarse whisper. His usual cold arrogance was gone, replaced by this odd vulnerability, almost tender.
“ ... What? You’re afraid of thunder?”
“Yeah.”
Theo let out a raspy hum from his nose.
“ ... Come on, really?” A grown guy like him, scared of thunder?
“I’ve done bad things, and I’m afraid of getting struck by lightning.” Theo explained with a hint of self-mockery.
What kind of bad things had this troublemaker done?
“ ... That’s just superstition.” Emily soothed him gently.
“I heard about ball lightning that can shoot through windows into rooms, with a whistling sound like ghosts playing ancient flutes on prehistoric plains. It chases people until it burns them to charcoal, turning them to ash. That’s not superstition, it’s from physics books.” Theo defended himself earnestly, sounding like a straight-A student.
Emily’s mind filled with question marks. What kind of weird physics book was that?
“ ... Anyway, don’t worry. The roof has a lightning rod, so we’ll be fine.” Emily stuck to her comforting routine.
“Okay...”
After that hum, Theo went quiet.
Sweat beaded on Emily’s forehead as she asked timidly, “Aren’t you going back to your room to sleep?”
Theo mumbled thickly, “I’m scared. I want to sleep here with you.”
“ ... Huh?”
“On stormy nights, I always need someone else to sleep with or I can’t drift off.”
“ ... What?” Emily thought he was getting more ridiculous by the minute. “You want to sleep here? But if you’re in my bed, where do I go?”
“This bed’s plenty big.” Theo said it like it was obvious.
Emily’s heart pounded. “No way! We’re not supposed to be that close, guy and girl...”
“What are you imagining?”
Theo’s voice trailed off with a light chuckle, warmer than his earlier cool ones, more pleasant to the ear. “Sis, the bed’s huge, we won’t even touch. I just need company, nothing more...”
That sudden “sis” carried a bit of playful whining.
Emily’s ears heated up from his tone, her heart fluttering, her body chilled. She slipped under the covers first, keeping far away on the other side of the big bed.
From the way he’d acted so disdainful before, barely glancing at her, she figured he had no intentions toward her.
Yeah, he was just a half-grown kid, probably not even fully developed down there. She shouldn’t overthink it.
A brilliant flash of lightning tore across the sky, lighting the room in stark white.
In that moment, Emily saw the big boy on the other end curled up like a large dog, wearing what looked like Tyler’s black pajamas. His arms hugged his head, covering his ears, fetal-like in a womb, the picture of insecurity. The back of his head looked fuzzy and oddly endearing.
A deafening crack of thunder followed the flash.
Theo didn’t make a sound, but his body seemed to tremble slightly.
Emily wasn’t sure if some maternal instinct kicked in, but he looked so pitiful. She scooted a little closer, whispering with concern, “Don’t be scared ... it’s just thunder. Plus, I’m on the outside, so if lightning comes in, it’ll hit me first...”
“Okay...”
The boy hummed vaguely, like a frightened animal’s whimper.
With him lying there like that, she couldn’t sleep either. Emily inched nearer, trying some gentle counseling in a soft, careful voice. “Hey ... Theo, what happened? If you can’t sleep, want to talk to sis about it? Um ... keeping it bottled up might not be good for you, you know?”
“@$%# died.” Theo muttered something low.
“What did you say...?” Emily leaned in closer to hear.
“My mom passed away.”
This time Emily caught it, stunned.
Theo lifted his face a bit from the covers, his dark eyes peeking out from under his arms, staring at her or maybe into nothing. He repeated softly, “My mom got struck by lightning...”
“...?” Emily’s eyes widened, at a loss for words.
Theo chuckled lightly, his tone distant and cool. “You don’t believe me, right? I was still in my crib, on a stormy night like this. My mom went out to fly a kite, drew the lightning right to her. They couldn’t save her ... That night, my dad was in bed with his mistress, or maybe his second one, third, who knows...”
“...”
