Chapter 15

Emily had barely settled into a comfortable position at her desk, one that wouldn’t aggravate her discomfort, when Tyler’s assistant approached again. She noticed the assistant pause beside her, and her hand trembled slightly, but she managed to stay composed while waiting for whatever came next.

Tyler wanted her in his office once more, and the memories from yesterday flooded back vividly, draining the color from her face. The assistant’s tone left no room for argument, so Emily could only hope silently that this time it was about actual work.

Yeah, right, like that was possible.

Once inside the office, Emily positioned herself carefully, close enough for a scolding but far enough to escape if things turned physical, her head bowed low.

Tyler knew exactly what the odd way she walked meant, along with the glistening fluid on the exposed part of her porcelain-white calf beneath her long skirt, but seeing it up close only fueled his rage.

“Where did you put the company rules you read when you started here? What kind of time do you call this for showing up to work? Give me one good reason!”

The assistant hadn’t left yet, which had eased Emily’s mind a bit, but Tyler’s outburst made the assistant worry about getting caught in the crossfire, so with a quick excuse, the assistant slipped away.

Suddenly, the office held just Emily and Tyler again.

With the assistant gone, Emily’s panic surged. Being alone with Tyler terrified her now, her mind turning to mush, unable even to come up with a simple excuse.

Crack! Tyler slammed his pen down on the desk, startling Emily into lifting her head, her fear plain for him to see.

“Hah! So now you’re scared? You weren’t acting shy when someone had you pinned in that car, were you?”

Emily’s face went pale at his words, her mouth opening but no denial coming out.
