Chapter 93: Profit Fever Takes the Floor
Profit moved men’s hearts. Legal windfall profit moved them even more.
Buy and sell, and a few thousand, even ten thousand dollars of profit, could land in one’s hands. At first, perhaps some people could still hold their position and refuse to participate. But when everyone began going mad for profit, certain people’s position would gradually start to waver.
Watching others eat meat was not an enjoyable thing. When people walked into an unfamiliar restaurant, the reason was very likely one of two possibilities. The first was that the aroma drifting out of the restaurant made it impossible to resist. The second was that the food in the advertisements pasted on the restaurant’s glass windows looked tempting.
Interest worked the same way. Watching helplessly as others joined this feast of wealth made people feel miserable, because they only had to reach out their hands to do the same thing. They would persuade themselves.
The constantly rising price heated the atmosphere on-site. In the end, the price of the apartment stopped at twenty-seven thousand seven hundred fifty dollars, two thousand dollars more than William had expected. He had thought it would be the limit if he could push it to around twenty-five thousand dollars.
After all, the audience for this Secondhand Goods Auction was not the middle class, people who could casually take out a sum of money. Ninety-nine percent of the people here were poor. Some might not even have two thousand dollars in savings. But they had given William a surprise.
What was even more surprising was Wood. His face flushed red, he took the initiative to leave his position and run over to Richard. The two lowered their heads and talked for a while. Richard even punched him, then hooked an arm around his neck and rubbed his hair hard.
Wood, this promising young fellow, grinned through the rough treatment. His relationship with Richard seemed very good.
Six thousand seven hundred twenty dollars of profit. William had said he would split it with him half and half. In other words, Wood had only sat there holding a microphone and shouted a few lines, yet he had earned three thousand three hundred sixty dollars for himself. Added to his previous dividends, his income for one day had already exceeded half a year of his undercover agent salary.
This was only one consignment auction in a month. There would be four consignment auctions like this every month. He did not dare hope that every event would be this lucky, but he believed that no matter how bad it was, there would still be a fraction.
So Richard’s words had all been true. Right now, he only wanted to share his joy with everyone, and show off a little while he was at it.
Finally, when he lifted his head and saw William, his excited expression calmed slightly. He also realized that he was not a salesman. He was here as an undercover agent.
This made his emotions begin to draw back. He bowed slightly to William, and William returned an encouraging smile.
During this time, Ferraler had also been chatting with William. When he learned that William had promised these salesmen he would split the profit with them fifty-fifty on products above the profit line, he could hardly believe his ears.
“That young fellow looks overjoyed. May I ask how much he made on this deal?” Ferraler had also noticed Wood. Looking at the young fellow, curiosity scratched at his heart.
William glanced at him and said with a smile, “More than three thousand dollars...”
“Hiss...” Ferraler drew in a sharp breath. More than three thousand dollars, from one order. “Don’t you think you’re giving him too much?” As he spoke, he explained what he meant. “I mean, if you gave him three or five hundred dollars, he would be grateful for your generosity. Why give him that much?”
This was not polite talk. It was Ferraler’s truest thought. He wanted to maintain long-term cooperation with William, and that meant understanding what sort of person William really was.
This was a good opportunity to deepen their understanding of each other, and William did not hide anything. “I once met a man. He told me that when you want to clutch all the benefits in your own hands, even your brothers will leave you.”
He slowly turned his head to look at Ferraler beside him. Their gazes met in the air. William’s eyes had no flicker or flash, steady as stone. “But if you are willing to share your success with others, everyone will treat you as their own brother.”
“When wealth gathers in your hands, others will leave you because their demand for profit cannot be satisfied. But when you are willing to split that wealth equally with them, they will burst out with unprecedented drive.”
“We are not in a superior-subordinate relationship. We are partners.”
If Wood had heard this sentence, he would have cried out again. So Richard had not been boasting. In truth, William still had much more he had not said.
