Chapter 20: The Woman Worth Watching

William was not a walking stud. He could not possibly see a woman for the first time and immediately begin thinking about what posture they ought to maintain that night when confronting each other.

Once, in that small room in another world, he had heard a friend tell a story. That friend’s story was not as strange or exciting as other people’s stories. It was simply a story of numbers constantly growing.

In truth, he had not done anything too extraordinary. While boasting about his brief and prosperous life, he had summarized several very important keys to success. One of them was this: you must persuade the accountant to stand on your side.

An accountant could do far too many things, more than most people could imagine. The simplest example was that an accountant could quietly make millions, tens of millions, even hundreds of millions in funds disappear without anyone noticing. If certain people did not need to use that money later and only then discover something was wrong, the matter might remain hidden forever.

Here, accountants could also easily muddle the source of certain funds and submit that portion of money to the IRS for review, though most of the time people hired accountants in order to reduce the amount of tax they paid.

The world William currently lived in was not a highly developed information society. Many things were still preserved through handwritten records. That meant the special role of accountant would become even more important.

An accountant standing on his side was very important. She could use her professional knowledge to help William solve many problems. Some things could not be fully mastered through simple study. He needed a reliable woman.

Reliable did not mean the two of them had to become a tightly bound group. It meant their fates had to be closely tied together, so that after some conflict arose and they parted ways, one would not expose the other’s dirty material. It was a very subtle link.

If opening one’s mouth too easily would destroy not only the other person but also oneself, then everyone would fully consider the matter and weigh the pros and cons before speaking.

Compared with male accountants, who were more inclined to seize the initiative, women were somewhat easier to control. Many people said men were creatures controlled by hormones. In truth, women were too. At least some women still believed in love.

After hearing William’s words, Vera’s expression became somewhat strange. She even laughed softly, then sighed. “I appreciate what you said. I know you only wanted to bring us a little closer...”

This was the advantage of being handsome. William did not even need to speak, and others would take the initiative to think on his behalf and find a suitable excuse. Vera looked at him and shook her head slightly. “I’m already married. It isn’t appropriate for you to say that. Let’s talk only about work, all right?”

William pressed his lips together and nodded. “Only work...”

When human emotions and the complex chemical changes inside the body had already begun to evolve, was it not a little too late to say stop?

On the surface, the two of them did not seem to develop any distance because of that small and interesting exchange. They kept working hard to discuss business. But only they themselves knew whether the conversation they pretended to have forgotten had any effect.

After a brief negotiation, William would hire Vera as Great Empire’s accountant, with full authority over all accounting work that needed to be handled there. If Great Empire’s business achieved a breakthrough in the future, there would not be only one person in the office. There would be more.

After the salary was finally settled, Vera said goodbye to William. She needed to return to the law firm to file the record, then apply for an employment agreement. She worked at the law firm only when she did not have a full-time job.

A law firm was like a comprehensive place. On one hand, they handled outsourced bookkeeping services. On the other, they also sent accountants into firms as full-time employees and could provide even more related services.
