Chapter 173: The Boardroom Before the Fall
The boardroom that had once represented Ristowan at its highest level now looked somewhat empty.
At Ristowan’s peak, even when there were no extra chairs, shareholders had been willing to stand here during meetings, listening to Neo and the other boardroom members deliver their opinions at the general assembly.
Even if those people could not speak during the meeting and could not move about freely, they had still been more than willing.
But now, many chairs in this room remained empty. Combined with the rumors spreading outside, a hard-to-define emotion was beginning to spread among a small portion of the people in the boardroom.
Gape pushed up his glasses and sat near the end of the table. As an important employee who had become a corporate group associate, he had also received an invitation from President Neo to attend this closed-door, nonpublic meeting.
Moreover, the meeting would produce no minutes. In other words, this meeting would not spread through any official or unofficial channel. Even if someone did spread word of it, no one would admit it.
This was a meeting that would never appear in Ristowan’s history. Naturally, that also meant it was bound to be different.
President Neo looked at his watch. Downstairs, the security guard also looked at the watch on his wrist.
A watch worth more than two hundred thousand dollars and a watch worth a little over twenty dollars pointed to the same time. The security guard closed the main doors, while a smile appeared on President Neo’s face.
He looked at the employees seated around the conference table. These employees were all very “important” to Ristowan. Each of them held some secret concerning a particular aspect of the company.
For instance ... his gaze stopped on Gape, who sat at the far end. The reason he selected Gape at first glance was partly because Gape did not turn his head to look left or right, and partly because it was a subconscious act.
Choosing to look at someone from either side of the table could make people feel targeted. Looking directly ahead would not.
After Gape felt His Excellency the president’s gaze, he wore a modest smile and lowered his head slightly to show submission.
Neo nodded noncommittally and began the meeting’s agenda. “You all know that recently, certain claims have been circulating outside. Those claims are in fact true.”
“I have already submitted the corporate group’s approved relocation request to the governor. We will receive the reply in about a month at the latest. Before the first half of next year, roughly speaking, we will complete all relocation work.”
His words were clear, and his confidence was full. He had a strong presence that allowed people to see his composure and ease. “Regarding everything that has happened during this period, I know many people feel lost. Now I am telling you that all of it was planned by me.”
The atmosphere in the boardroom changed slightly at once. Because of the rift between Ristowan Group, the Mayor of Sabine City, and the governor, its stock had crashed, losing forty percent of its market value in just one week.
Even the rising momentum of the Baler Federation industrial index had been dragged down by it. This had made more and more people lose confidence in Ristowan Group.
Immediately afterward, Neo, representing Ristowan Group’s boardroom, submitted a delisting application. Ristowan’s stock crashed again, while Neo and the others seized the chance to begin repurchasing stock on a large scale at extremely low prices. By this week, they had finally completed more than seventy percent of the stock buyback program.
Another twenty-odd percent of the stock remained scattered in the hands of long-term investment holders and in certain accounts showing no signs of activity.
Some people were simply investing in the firm, not in the stock. Others were heavy gamblers. They did not believe a corporate group could disappear just like that. They were betting that Ristowan would someday be listed again.
No matter what, the delisting plan could no longer be stopped, and Neo could begin executing the next step.
He said this to make those who had begun entertaining other thoughts discard them.
It was difficult for him to give up these people. If possible, Neo would not have wanted to maintain any further connection with most of them. Yet between these people, himself, and the corporate group existed bonds that could not be ignored.
Take the new associate, Gape, for example. He had helped the company inspect and revise large numbers of account books, weakening and eliminating some of the company’s less reasonable accounts.
These people seemed to have become associates because of their effort and ability. In reality, it was because they possessed company secrets. The company had no choice but to grant them higher standing and greater returns to ensure they would keep those secrets.
This group of people were all loan sharks, but the company could not simply abandon them. If one of them lost his senses and decided to blow himself up, the corporate group would be dragged into the abyss with him.
He had to stabilize morale and prevent these people from thinking they could gain new opportunities by selling some secret. He would give those people opportunities himself.
“In truth, the corporate group’s performance has been poor for several years. We have been searching for new breakthroughs, while ensuring our continued stable development on the technical level.”
“The most recent opportunity came from Biddle Group. If we could swallow part of Biddle Group’s core industries, we could quickly reverse the present situation. But everyone knows that our talks with City Hall and the state government collapsed.”
