Chapter 155: Before the Credit Door Closes
The silence in the corner did not affect the whole floor. From time to time, people still passed through the corridor. They might glance this way, but when they saw two gentlemen holding cigarettes standing by the window, they gave up paying further attention.
Whenever there was a meeting, there would always be some gentlemen who finished their cigarettes before the meeting began. Although there was no explicit administrative order forbidding people from smoking indoors, generally speaking, people still tried to avoid such situations.
On one hand, no one was used to smelling bad. The stench of cigarettes and the stench of liquor were always nauseating odors. Secondly, doing this also set off one’s own cultivation.
At this moment, William stood by the window and shook his head. “I don’t have anything that needs a loan for the time being. You know, someone invested in me.”
He had already cashed Mark’s cashier’s check and deposited it into his own account. Eight hundred thousand dollars was not a small figure. It was enough to alarm some people inside the bank who liked to hear stories and tell stories. Naturally, Jorgreman knew about it too, and knew even more clearly some of the little episodes behind it.
Originally, those investors had publicly declared that they could give William’s Interstellar Trading Company a valuation of seventy million dollars. Their purpose was to heat up the shares in their own hands ahead of time. This kind of thing was very common in business.
Valuation was always something “estimated.” The subsequent negotiations and a series of other practices would quickly shrink this “valuation,” then allow them to enter at a relatively reasonable price. But that was small-circle information. It involved everyone’s interests, and they would not reveal it.
To the outside, they would still claim that within the next five years, this company’s market value would certainly reach seventy million dollars. The shares they might have spent several million dollars to buy would instantly multiply several times over.
Sometimes business tactics were just that simple. With nothing but a mouth, one could realize income in the hundreds of millions.
Of course, even if this price would be pressed downward, it could at least still be sold for several million dollars. Before this, William had held roughly one million seven or eight hundred thousand dollars raised through Jorgreman, plus the eight hundred thousand dollars Mark had given him, as well as several million dollars about to enter his account and that piece of land worth two million dollars. In a short span of time, he had actually completed a huge transformation.
Did that count as a miracle?
No. It could only be called marvelous, but not a miracle. The financial stock and paper markets of the past two years were the real miracle.
The two soon finished smoking. At the end, Jorgreman reminded him not to acquire any industry related to real industry in the near future. It counted as a gift from him after this period of cooperation with William.
Once the financial markets collapsed, all industries tied to wealth would suffer a devastating blow, and that included real sector industries.
Acquiring real industry now was the same as paying the bill for certain people ahead of time. It would be better to wait a while longer. After those people went bankrupt, those expensive things could be bought at much lower prices.
The two returned to the venue and each merged back into his own social circle. William’s return caused some people to gather around him again. This was a very realistic world. Whoever had money was the brightest star.
Now everyone knew William had money in hand, and cash at that. Naturally, certain speculators and opportunists circled around him. Of course, there were also some legitimate businessmen.
“Mr. Carter, I heard your club is recruiting female athletes?” The speaker was a middle-aged gentleman in his forties. He was somewhat fat, but not greasy. On the contrary, he looked very fresh and clean.
The well-fitted clothes on him were spotless, giving off a faint fruity wood fragrance. This fragrance was not the smell of perfume.
In true upper society, no matter how mainstream society packaged perfume, perfume was still something whores used to cover up hereditary defects. At least in the present era, that was how people saw it.
But they also needed some fragrance on their bodies to cover the excessive body odor caused by “the Flesh-Eaters,” so they needed fumigation.
Generally speaking, these people, not including the parvenus, would have a dedicated scented parlor. Whenever their schedule was confirmed, the steward would arrange for the maid to fumigate the clothes they needed to wear at the banquet.
Some valuable spices would be lit and then smothered. After the flame was smothered, the lid would be opened again. This way, there would be no obvious burnt smell, only a faint fragrance.
This fragrance actually would not last too long, but it was absolutely enough for an after-party or dinner. By the latter half of a social event, under the numbing effects of liquor, cigarettes, and cigars, people’s sense of taste was almost gone, and they could no longer smell much fragrance or stink either.
At least up to the present, much of upper society, especially the descendants of great families with inheritance, still used this method. As for the future ... perhaps they would like the convenience of perfume, but at least now, they did not think that way.
