Chapter 123: The Dinner Gape Could Not Save

Gape was wearing an apron, something he rarely did, and was busy at the dining table. As of yesterday, all the work on his desk had finally been completed, and the results had been excellent.

Neo, the president of Ristowan, had personally received him and would nominate him at the quarterly meeting between the end of this month and the beginning of next month to become a junior associate of the Ristowan Group.

The associate title alone would earn him more in quarterly dividends than his current annual salary.

In truth, he understood perfectly well that the reason Neo and the board had approved it was to keep him quiet. During this period, he had handled a large number of the corporate group’s books and sealed up countless holes.

Under normal circumstances, those holes would not have caused much trouble. After all, Ristowan was one of Sabine City’s pillar business groups. Even if something did go wrong, so long as it was not a scandal shocking the entire nation, both Sabine City and the state government would do everything possible to protect the Ristowan Group.

But once those holes became connected to the Biddle Group, and involved members of the legislature, perhaps even members of the President’s Cabinet, then even the smallest issue could become a knife thrust straight into someone’s heart.

To clean up those accounts, Gape had pushed himself beyond his limits. In the end, he had finally made the books presentable enough to survive scrutiny.

Now his work was finished. Neo had personally awarded him a bonus to thank him for all the overtime, and his position had been promoted accordingly.

With those matters settled, he finally had time to deal with certain small problems at home.

During this period, he had noticed changes in his wife, Vera. But he had not simply sat back and let things happen. He had hired a detective agency that worked with the Ristowan Group to investigate whether there was any improper relationship between Vera and William.

What reassured him was that his wife had remained loyal. Though William sometimes looked less than trustworthy, both of them had respected a certain boundary in all their interactions.

Today, he had personally prepared dinner. Partly it was a reward for himself after all this hard work. Partly it was to resolve the tension within his marriage.

He believed his wife would understand his difficulties. He also knew Vera had attended the celebration after William’s consignment auction. Although she had only participated in the first half, they were all adults. Everyone knew what happened in that house.

She should understand that human will could not always prevent certain things from coming into existence. Refusal was often not a declaration of virtue but a declaration of position.

How could someone in a critical position within such an important department remain completely detached from other people?

He adjusted the silverware on the table, straightened the napkin folded into the shape of a heart, and nodded with satisfaction.

He also checked the gifts he had prepared as an apology. A diamond necklace worth more than three thousand dollars and a platinum bracelet. The atmosphere was so romantic that the air itself seemed sweet.

The sound of a key entering the lock came from outside.

Gape quickly changed clothes and hid the gifts. They were supposed to be surprises. He had even turned off the dining room lights.

He walked to the entryway, opened the door, and greeted his wife with a smile.

One stood inside the door, the other outside. They looked at each other for a moment through the narrow distance between them.

The expression on Gape’s face changed almost immediately.

When the door opened, the evening breeze drifted in. Along with the cool summer air came the unmistakable scent of liquor.

“You’ve been drinking?”

That single sentence shattered the calm between them.

Carrying the gift bag William had given her, Vera stepped inside and nodded.

“I had a little wine with dinner.”

Gape frowned.

“I didn’t know you were eating out.”

In the Baler Federation, dinner was generally served late and treated as an important meal.

Most companies and factories did not finish work until around six o’clock. By the time people got home and handled various errands, most families would not begin dinner until around seven.

Gape knew William’s consignment auction would run late, so he had deliberately left extra time. He could not help glancing at the elegant watch on his wrist.

It was only a little after eight.

Vera’s mood was not particularly good.

Before opening the door, she had still been smiling. There had also been a strange expression she could not quite identify, perhaps regret, perhaps happiness.

She felt she should not have let herself be talked into kissing William.

But the moment she opened the door and saw her husband standing there, her emotions changed instantly.

Not depressed.

Simply calm.

Flat.

As she walked toward the stairs, she nodded.

“Now you know.”

“I thought you’d come home for dinner. I spent a long time preparing it.”

Gape hurried after her.

Had all the effort he put into arranging this romantic evening really been for nothing?

Vera paused halfway up the stairs.
