Chapter 107: A Smile Across the Desk
“The state office called me just now. They hope to understand the matter in greater detail as soon as possible...”
President Elena’s expression turned somewhat grave. Less than twenty-four hours had passed since yesterday, and not only did the state office already know about it, they also appeared very concerned.
Without question, they absolutely did not want to encourage the Sabine City Women’s Rights Defenders Association for its outstanding contribution to the work. They wanted to take the credit that should have belonged to them.
Job opportunities were truly too important. Financial independence and freedom were the guarantee of women’s rights, independence, and freedom. This point had already been proven.
If a woman could not achieve financial independence and freedom, then it would be very difficult for her to escape the important role men played in her life. She would still become an appendage to a man, unless she could prove that she could live perfectly well without one. In terms of material needs, that meant achieving financial independence and freedom.
They talked about these things all day long, advocating for society to provide more jobs for women, but that could not possibly be achieved all at once.
Among the vast majority of major jobs, many were ones women could not perform, such as heavy physical labor. There were not many jobs they could participate in.
Add to that the current economic downturn and stubbornly high unemployment, and women’s position in the workplace became even more awkward.
At a time like this, the emergence of hundreds, thousands, or even more jobs prepared specifically for women was absolutely major news. It could even shake the structure of the state Women’s Rights Defenders Association. No wonder the state office was so nervous and wanted to know more of the inside story.
“I didn’t agree to them...” Elena stood by the window, looking through the bright glass at the girls of all ages gathered downstairs. A faint smile appeared on her face. “This victory belongs to us.”
With these people, with the thousand or more job opportunities William had spoken of, and with the sudden nervousness from the state office, Elena finally realized at this moment that she might not be without a chance to climb another step.
Strictly speaking, the Women’s Rights Defenders Association was not an official institution. It was only an unofficial, nonprofit, voluntary civic organization. But it possessed considerable authority and influence all the same.
Even some noble ladies, socialites, and the wives of political figures were members of the association. That alone showed what kind of political influence it held.
Although it was not an official institution, there was not much difference between it and one anymore.
To leap from the presidency of a second-tier city branch into an important position at the state office, and perhaps even rise to the association headquarters later, would mean setting one foot on an entirely new road.
This was an important resource. She would absolutely not let it go.
She lowered her head and looked at the watch on her wrist. The time was almost ten o’clock. After speaking with the state office by phone, she had immediately called William, hoping to meet with him and talk.
On one hand, she wanted to resolve the little misunderstanding between them that did not truly exist. On the other, she wanted to pull William into her own camp, or at least ensure he would not be lured away by a few words from those bitches in the state office.
Everyone needed supporters. She needed them too.
“We must...”
Just as she was mobilizing the people in the room, someone knocked on the office door. A young girl stood outside with a flushed face. “Mr. Carter is already here...”
Irina froze slightly. She had just been about to say that she had not seen William’s car even now, so how had William arrived? But very quickly, she abandoned the question. Meeting William was more important than thinking about how he had gotten here.
