Chapter 106: Pressure Behind Closed Doors

“Do you have some personal conflict with William?”

After Tyler returned to the association, she immediately told everyone the result of her meeting with William. Julie was soon summoned to the association office by phone.

In this bad economy, two thousand jobs for women were enough to make the Sabine City Women’s Rights Protection Association the focus of attention in the state, and even across the country.

Once public opinion followed, the higher-level association would inevitably pay more attention to the Sabine City branch.

With attention, and with real achievements to show, they could receive more social assistance, and everyone’s life would become a little easier.

Organizing marches and demonstrations, organizing rallies, paying salaries to the association’s full-time staff, and covering daily expenses all required money.

But as a nonprofit civic organization, they had no business units or operating institutions of their own. They could only rely on allocations from the higher association, social sponsorships, and some voluntary donations.

Two thousand jobs were enough to let them break free from their current situation. So after everyone gained a rough understanding of the matter, Julie was immediately denounced.

The president of the local branch was also a woman around forty. Most of the women involved in women’s professional sports were around that age. Those older than them tended to be more traditional in their thinking, and they had neither the energy nor the physical stamina for such work. Some of them would not even believe they were unfortunate, or that their lives were painful.

Only younger women cared more about these things, hoping they could obtain more rights equal to men’s and willing to contribute their personal strength for that purpose.

The president’s name was Elena, and she came from a middle-class family. That was simply how things were. It was said that the state association president came from a political family. Sometimes, women like them really did understand the workings of society better than ordinary women.

Elena’s question immediately made Julie feel as if the room were spinning. She also sensed something called “hostility” in the eyes of the others.

She did not know what had happened. Last night, these good sisters had been ready to help her seek justice from William. Now, all at once, they had turned around to target her?

Her face turned slightly pale. She shook her head, denying the president’s suggestion. “Yesterday was the first time I met William. There’s no conflict between us.”

At that moment, the man who had met William, whose position was association counsel, spoke. Any complete institution needed its own lawyer. After he and Tyler had said goodbye to William, William had suddenly added one more thing.

He had mentioned Julie’s outfit yesterday and said it might be part of the problem.

Now the lawyer said softly, “Yesterday, you wore a low-cut blouse and a very short skirt, correct?”

Julie did not know what that sentence meant. She hesitated, but still nodded and admitted it. Some things could not be hidden, and she did not believe she lacked the right to choose what she wore.

Freedom in dress and appearance had also been one of the rights won through women’s professional movements. Along with makeup, it was considered one of the most successful equality projects.

The lawyer nodded again. “You wanted to seduce William, but you failed, so you developed a certain resentment toward him, perhaps even hatred. Correct?” After saying that, he ignored Julie’s widened eyes and look of disbelief, and continued, “This morning I asked several people who know you well. Their assessment of the way you usually dress was ‘conservative’...”

He stopped speaking at exactly the right moment. Though he did not continue, under his guidance, the expressions of the women in the boardroom basically all changed, including President Elena’s.

Everyone here knew Julie. In the past, Julie had often appeared together with players to support the Women’s Rights Defenders Association, backing them in public opinion. In these people’s eyes, Julie had indeed always dressed conservatively.

On top of that, she worked in a professional sports club full of men. If she dressed too revealingly, it could cause trouble, even danger.

Although society was unwilling to admit it, it had no choice but to admit that the education level and personal cultivation of those professional athletes, including their understanding of the law, were below average.
