Chapter 104: A New Game for the Club

Kane and Julie both stared at William in shock. Their minds could not quite process that because of a mere difference of opinion, Julie, who had worked at the club since she was nineteen, had been kicked out by the new boss after twelve years of service.

Over those twelve years, she had poured too much of herself into this place. Even now, after the club had been downgraded into an amateur club and could only pay her roughly the average wage every month, she had never thought about leaving.

Julie had even imagined she would work here for the rest of her life, and that one day she would have her son become an athlete too, train here, and represent Sabine City on the world stage.

There were many things she had never imagined, including being fired for contradicting one sentence from William.

She still stared at William with wide eyes, unable to believe it. William simply repeated himself. “You may leave, ma’am...”

With that reminder from William, Julie left in a daze. Kane hesitated, wanting to speak but stopping himself. Watching Julie’s desolate back, he finally could not help stepping forward. “Sir...”

William raised his hand and stopped Kane from pleading on her behalf. These people had spent too long at the club. Added to that, the previous operators had essentially only wanted to launder money, so they had delegated power to the team’s management, leaving everyone inside the team with a distorted understanding of authority.

There was only one person in this team whose word counted, and that was the owner of the team. Everyone else merely served him. They had to understand that.

They could oppose any order William gave, as long as they resigned first. After that, they could do anything they wanted so long as it was not illegal. Otherwise, William would have his lawyers sue them until they could not afford pants.

Even if Julie had not stepped forward, William would have made an example of someone else. That person would have been the coach. The coach had not come today, though as far as William knew, the club still had one.

Because the money-laundering scandal had implicated not only the original operating enterprise, but also some players and even the coach.

The logic was simple. If the players and coach had not participated in the entire process, laundering money through player transfers would have been very difficult to complete perfectly.

That was also why the original coach had been unable to find another job. Not every club was willing to accept a coach with a professional stain on his record and put him in charge of its team, so the coach had remained here, living off what was left.

Since Kane knew how to keep himself in his proper place, the person William would use to establish authority had to come from the other two. Then Julie had volunteered.

After stopping Kane from speaking, William changed the subject. “I agree with what you said earlier. Sports represent the spirit and public face of a city. Sabine City needs to show something new in this stagnant summer. We need a professional men’s American football team to lift the mood. If I take over this place and restart the professional club, how much money will it take?”

Kane had originally still wanted to talk to William about Miss Julie, but at that moment his heart gave a violent thump. The sound seemed to ring inside his chest, leaving him briefly dizzy. How could he still remember that a woman he had worked with for more than ten years had just been driven out by this charming boss?

After a short calculation, he quoted William a figure. “This year would require about three hundred thousand dollars. It may increase somewhat later. If we want to bring in star players, the cost could be higher.”

As he spoke, his voice lowered. Running a professional football club was not a simple or easy matter. During this year’s transfer window, top football star Jonathan’s transfer fee had already exceeded three million one hundred thousand dollars, setting a historical record.

Think about it. A star player worth three million one hundred thousand dollars could not possibly work with a group of “blue vests.” He also needed excellent teammates, at least three or four star-level players, plus some high-grade blue vests. The roster alone could break ten million dollars, and that was before calculating annual salaries. Forget ordinary small companies. Even a lesser magnate might not be able to play this game.

William did not speak. Kane gritted his teeth and added, “I think the first thing we need to do right now is get promoted into the professional league and complete the transition from amateur to professional. After that, we can train our own star players. That would greatly reduce the cost, and perhaps even turn a profit!”

A clever man. He knew how to make a capitalist like William support his idea: let him see profit.
