Chapter 100: Wires Singing Before the Rush

The way a person ate could reveal certain aspects of his character.

For example, His Honor the Mayor in front of him. The way he handled knife and fork while dining was very simple, quick, and forceful. In two or three strokes, he cut a piece of beef from the steak, wiped it through the sauce, put it into his mouth, and swallowed it quickly.

In fact, some people had more delicate pursuits. They would make more cuts, and the entire process would be drawn out longer.

Because there was a saying that if a dining knife cut too quickly and too roughly, it would shift and alter the texture and fibers of the food, thereby affecting the mouthfeel.

People like that might be more emotional, and the things they pursued more idealized. People like His Honor the Mayor, on the other hand, were representatives of pragmatism. Efficiency, value, and results were the things they pursued.

While William was observing him in secret, His Honor the Mayor put down his knife and fork. He picked up his napkin and dabbed at his lips, raised his glass, and took a small sip of red wine. “Let’s continue what we were talking about. What do you think we should do to change the current situation?”

They had previously spoken about isolationism and broad international changes. William’s mature perspective made it easy for people to overlook the fact that he was only twenty this year. Added to his clothes and bearing, he looked about twenty-four or twenty-five.

Even so, on the road of politics, he was still a young man. Many politicians, at twenty-four or twenty-five, were still working as office interns for certain people. They could not even make sense of domestic affairs, much less international affairs.

The more His Honor the Mayor talked with William, the more curious he became about what other interesting remarks William might make. He was looking forward to it.

William also put down his knife and fork at the right time. He dabbed away the sauce on his lips and thought for a brief moment before answering. “I believe that if our Federation Progressive Party can obtain the next administration, the first thing we must do is participate more in the construction of the international community and bring our advantages into play. The Baler Federation may not be the most advanced country in terms of technology, but it is absolutely among the front ranks. Many countries need our help.”

His Honor the Mayor nodded noncommittally. “But have you considered one question? Why should they accept us? Why should the international community accept us?” This was also a question certain radical factions in Baler Federation society were currently thinking about.

Because of the Federation Conservative Party, the Baler Federation had previously shut its doors. Now it suddenly wanted to open them again, and wanted to take part in the activities of the international community as an important player. On what basis should others bring you along and let you be the leader?

The senior leadership of the Federation Progressive Party had also discussed many countermeasures. They already had a whole series of plans. Whether they could be carried out, whether they could succeed, remained to be verified. But overall, having specific methods gave people peace of mind.

His Honor the Mayor also knew these things. He raised this question only because he wanted to see whether William’s thinking would be the same as the Progressive Party leadership’s thinking.

The corner of William’s mouth lifted slightly. “Responsibility, His Honor the Mayor. If we shoulder more responsibility in the international community, and let more countries recognize that the Baler Federation is a country willing to bear more international responsibility, then we will be able to possess more right to speak.”

His Honor the Mayor nodded noncommittally. He pondered William’s words and the meaning hidden behind them for a while, then asked with an even broader smile, “Then where do you think we should begin shouldering these responsibilities?”

“With international humanitarian relief.”

This was destined to be a very meaningful lunch. First, His Honor the Mayor and William achieved a high degree of unity in position and awareness in certain areas, laying the groundwork for the mayor’s major political achievement to come.
