Chapter 41: Let Me Explain
Initially, they thought that Hilda and David were in a relationship. Who would have thought that David and the company director were a couple?
At that moment, Hilda had her head lowered as tears welled up in her eyes.
David glanced across everyone in the sales department, and everyone instantly avoided his gaze.
Meanwhile, Zayne’s head was lowered the most. In fact, he wished there was a hole in the ground where he could bury himself under.
“Zayne, do you feel that I am unworthy of this position? Just now, weren’t you trying to chase me out of here?”
David looked at Zayne, asking in a teasing manner.
Zayne was stunned.
“Mr. Chance, you are worthy. This position is just right for you...”
“On the contrary, I feel that your current position of manager is unsuitable for you, Mr. Carlson.”
At David’s words, Zayne looked at him with a pitiful expression and quickly apologized, “Mr. Chance, it was wrong of me to look down upon you. I was a fool. Please give me another chance. I have worked hard in this company for many years to rise to my present position of being the manager...”
“Give you a chance?” David sneered. “Just now, when you were going to sack me, did you think about giving me a chance?”
At that, Zayne’s entire body trembled even more, and words seemed to have stuck in his throat.
“I hereby announce that you, Mr. Zayne Carlson, have been removed from the position of Sales Department Manager. From today onward, you are no longer a staff member of this company...” David declared loudly.
“Mr. Chance, please don’t ... No!” Zayne shouted as if he had gone crazy. Then, he looked at Josephine.
“Josephine, please help me. I don’t want to be fired...”
Josephine took a look at Zayne’s pathetic expression and bit her lip. She turned to David. “David, could you—”
Without waiting for Josephine to finish speaking, David waved his hand and interrupted, “Let me show you something. If you still want to plead on his behalf after seeing it, I’ll promise you...”
Shortly after, David turned on the slide projector in the conference room, and everyone turned their attention on the white screen, eager to see what he wanted to show to Maria.
When he turned the slide projector on, pictures of Zayne together with several other girls appeared.
There were also some explicit chat messages, which stunned Maria for a moment.
Looking at his photos, Zayne was dumbfounded. Then, like a crazy man, he tried to smash the projector.
“This is all fake. Fake...”
David sent Zayne down onto the floor with a kick and kept him there by stepping on him. Meanwhile, the projector continued displaying more photos.
The last pictures showed Zayne being intimate with Lydia. Maria nearly fell off her seat as if she was dealt a physical blow. Fortunately, Hilda reacted quickly and steadied her.
At that moment, even though she was a conniving woman, Lydia could not help blushing as she looked at herself on the screen.
“Goodness gracious! I always thought Lydia was best friends with Maria. I never imagined she would do something like this! How shameless!”
“From appearances, we don’t know what agenda anyone may have. No wonder Lydia spent so much time with Maria. She has ulterior motives...”
“Huh! I despise this type of characters. Shameless...”
Everyone was shocked, and they began to criticize her.
In the face of such an onslaught, Lydia almost broke down.
David turned off the projector after he had finished showing the slides.
Then he looked at Maria and asked, “Do you still want to beg on behalf of Zayne? I’ve told you before that he’s not suitable for you...”
Maria stood there motionless for a while, her eyes blazing with anger. Then she walked quickly toward Lydia.
“Maria, Maria, listen to me. Zayne seduced me. It was him who seduced me. In fact, he offered me money...”
Lydia did everything she could to put all the blame on Zayne.
“Lydia, you are shameless because you seduced me. You wanted me to help you move up in the company, so you pretended to be drunk and asked me to send you back to your room. Then you took off my clothes. You b*tch...”
Pinned to the floor by David, Zayne could only shout at the top of his lungs at Lydia.
Seeing this, David lifted his foot. Following that, Zayne leaped up immediately and rushed toward Lydia.
Viciously, he slapped Lydia hard across her cheeks.
Lydia covered her face with her hand and glared at Zayne.
“Zayne, you are a fcking scmbag. You told me that you only love me and are with Maria only because of her wealthy family. I didn’t expect you to have affairs with so many other women...”
Feeling extremely dissatisfied, Lydia then started to fight with Zayne.
In a short while, their clothes were torn, and Zayne’s face was covered with blood.
“Security guards, please remove these two from our premises...”
Wearily, Josephine looked at the ugly scene and called for security guards to take them away.
A few security guards rushed in, ready to take the two troublemakers away.
“Maria, I was wrong. I made a mistake. Please help me. Help me...”
Zayne did not want to leave, and he grabbed at Maria’s feet, unwilling to let go.
Maria looked at him in disgust and kicked him away with her foot.
Zayne tried to crawl back, but the security guards eventually dragged him away.
“Why ... Why ... I’m not giving up so easily...”
Zayne yelled, but no one felt sorry for him.
Both Zayne and Lydia were dragged away after being fired. Everyone else in the sales department was in suspense. After all, they had all mocked David before in order to curry favor with Zayne.
David glanced at everyone and said, “As of now, the company still lacks a general manager, so this position will be given to Maria. As for the position of sales manager, Hilda will be taking over. I hope you two can work hard and be assets to the company...”
At David’s words, the whole sales department applauded loudly.
Maria was taken by surprise. She had thought that even if David did not blame or punish her, he would not give her a position of importance. After all, her attitude toward him had not been pleasant from the start.
She could hardly believe that he would make her the general manager.
“Maria, quickly, thank Mr. Chance for this opportunity...”
Someone in the department prompted Maria.
Maria snapped out of her daze and turned to David. “David, no, I mean, Mr. Chance. Thank you. I promise to work hard!”
When Maria finished thanking him, she tugged at Hilda, who was next to her. “Hilda, quickly thank Mr. Chance...”
Without any expression on her face, Hilda looked at David. “Thank you, Mr. Chance...”
Looking at Hilda’s expression, David felt his heart sink. However, he knew that love was not something that could be forced.
“Everyone else’s positions remain as before. Go back to work now...”
David did not blame any of the staff, so they were all extremely relieved and grateful.
As everyone left, David looked at Hilda’s departing figure. He wanted to catch up with her and give some explanation. However, Josephine was nearby, so he did not.
“Go ahead. Sometimes, it’s good to make things clear. I’m leaving, too...”
At that, Josephine got up and left.
David caught up with Hilda and asked to speak with her.
“Hilda, the truth is that I’ve always treated you as a younger sister. I have never tried to mislead you. However, my parents have some misunderstandings toward Josephine, so I kept quiet about it...”
It wasn’t David’s intention to hide the truth.
“David, you don’t need to explain. It was a one-sided relationship from the start. You’re doing great now, and I’m still young. In the future, there’s sure to be someone more suitable to be my boyfriend...”
Having said that, Hilda tried her best to plaster a smile on her face.
“Yes, I’m sure you’ll find someone suitable for you!”
David nodded.
In the blink of an eye, two days had passed.
David did not care much about being the director. He had always wanted to find an opportunity to explain Josephine’s matters to his parents.
If his parents would agree to let him live in Dragon Bay, he could speed up his training. Living in the current place, he couldn’t trace any spiritual energy, and he wasn’t able to practice his cultivation.
However, seeing how his parents and Hilda’s mother, Chloe, were happily discussing matters regarding him and Hilda, David couldn’t bring himself to crush their happiness.
In the afternoon, Gary gave David a call on the phone.
He told him that Hilda and her whole family had moved.
When David got the news, he was shocked. Immediately he drove home, only to see Hilda’s home had been locked and vacant.
Meanwhile, Gary was holding a letter.
“David, this is Hilda’s letter to you...”
Gary then handed the letter to him.
So, David opened up the letter and started to read. It turned out that Hilda did not feel like living here anymore, as she could not bear to face David day in and day out. Hence, she decided to bring her mother to another place where they had relatives.
Furthermore, Hilda also explained to David’s parents what had been going on between Josephine and him.
David clenched his fists after reading the letter. I do not want to hurt Hilda ever. Perhaps, this is the best way to end the matter. If she had stayed on which meant we would continue to see each other daily, it might be difficult for her.
“Ah ... Hilda is such a pitiable child. It’s unfortunate that you both weren’t fated...”
Hannah let out a sigh. Obviously, she knew the contents of the letter.
“David, why didn’t you tell us? If you were going to start a relationship with Josephine, your mom and I have no objections. As long as she is sincere, it does not matter what her status is. We were just worried that you would get conned. This evening, invite her to our home for dinner. Your mom and I have to apologize to her. Out of good intentions, she lent us a home, and we misjudged her...” Gary said.
“That’s right. It’s wrong of your dad and me to listen to gossip. She lent us such a good home to live in.
