Chapter 2

“I hear that congratulations are in order,” Seraphina smiled as she sat down across from Eric in the lunch room. “Last I knew you were still working in Finance, not Sales.”

“I had nothing planned for Saturday, so Jeff said that if I wanted to come in on my own time, I was welcome to do so.” Taking a bite from his sandwich, he winked.

“I saw the paperwork this morning. I’m impressed! Usually when someone starts in Sales, it takes a little time for the first one.” Indeed, Eric had sold someone a 2022 Nissan Armada with all the bells and whistles on Saturday, for just over thirty thousand dollars.

“It wasn’t that hard. A couple came in and were just wandering the lot. I strolled over to talk to them.”

“I’m surprised there wasn’t a stampede from the others.”

“They showed up in an old Taurus. I don’t think the others thought they were viable candidates for a sale.” He smiled. “They were wrong.”

“Obviously. Tell me what you did.”

“First, I introduced myself and then asked if I could be of assistance. They said they were ‘window shopping’ and not ready to make a commitment. I said I understood. Then I asked them what they were interested in. Never once did I mention pricing or costs or anything like that.”

Seraphina nodded. She had frequently seen potential deals ended before they had even begun because the sales person was aggressively asking things like “How much can you afford?”

“So was sat down together,’ Eric continued. “I asked them what had them thinking of possibly shopping for a new car. Well, baby number two was on the way and they wanted something with a serious safety rating and enough room for them, the baby stuff and the dog.”

“Dog?”

“Yeah. They showed me a picture of him. Shelter rescue. Standard big brown dog the size of a Shetland pony. Silly goofball named ‘Buster’ and they said the back cargo area needed to be large enough to hold a quilt for him to nest in with a towel because he drooled a lot.”

She couldn’t help but giggle.

“There were a few other things and I made a list of several cars for them. I handed it to them and said that they were welcome to go look and if one caught their interest, to come for me. No pressure. I just told them where each was parked and off they went. Twenty minutes later they were back and wanted to know more about the Armada. We took a test drive and they wanted it. I brought them back inside and we did the paperwork dance. An hour later they were the new owners.” Eric chuckled. “Easy peasy. No conflicts or adversarial back and forth. Gave them the best possible price up front and they were okay with it.”

“If more people took that sort of laid back approach, I’m certain we would see an increase in sales.”

“Outside of a house, a car is one of the biggest purchases a person makes. They don’t want someone trying to pressure or influence them. I just ask what interests them, give them options and then they decide. If they don’t see what they want, I ask if I can let them know if something new comes in for them to see. It’s not brain science or rocket surgery. Just respect the customer.”

“That’s a great attitude. And even though I said it before, congratulations.”

“Thank you.” Standing up, Eric smiled. “Time to go back to bean counting. I think the owners are looking to see how much can be allocated towards the fall holiday party. More extra money in the bank benefits everyone!”

As Eric left the room, one of the other cashiers took his seat quickly. “The new guy is is cute! What do you think? Any interest?”

“Zoe,” Seraphina let out a sigh. “Eric is a nice fellow. But I’m not sure he is one of the guys who will swim in the company pond. You need to look elsewhere.”

Zoe was thirty, twice divorced with two kids and was known to be a suggestive flirt. She was happy to accept a date from anyone who asked. She was someone who enjoyed life and had a fun personality.

“Oh, I don’t know,” Zoe smiled. “It might be fun to have someone new o spend time with!” She took a deep breath to allow her 36D bra to swell as it held the contents within. “And he is cute.”
