It seemed like it wasn’t more than a few minutes before I heard the crying of infants, but I wasn’t sure if I had drifted off in the interim or not. The door opened then and the sounds of their crying became louder, much louder, as two other nurses entered each bearing a screaming infant.
“You will need to be more upright to breast feed them,” the initial nurse informed me and used a remote controller to raise the head of the bed to a more upright position. Following that, she produced several pillows for the infants to rest on after opening the front of my hospital gown. The other nurses then deposited my two daughters on the pillows and made sure that they started nursing on my breasts. Quiet returned to the room. The girls were wrapped in pink blankets and all that you could see of them was their black hair and the red skin of their faces.
“The infant on your right side is your first daughter. The one on the left side is the second,” one of the new nurses informed me. “Have you decided on names for them yet?” followed that.
My daughters had lost no time and had immediately begun sucking on my breasts when positioned. I was so distracted by that, that I had trouble answering the nurse’s question.
“Yes,” I managed to say after a number of seconds. “My first daughter’s name is to be Alicia, and my second daughter’s name is to be Angela,” I told her.
“And the last name?” the nurse reminded me.
“Why it’s Lawristan. The same as my husband’s and mine,” I told her.
“We’ll make new name tags to replace the current ones. The infants will be remaining in the room with you all of the time you are here. There is already a crib here for them. Also the other nurse,” and she pointed to the initial nurse who was here when I awoke, “will remain here in the room with you,” she told me. This certainly confused me, as it wasn’t the normal procedure. I wondered if it was something that Yuryi had arranged and hadn’t mentioned.
“I’ll explain things shortly,” the initial nurse told me before the other two departed. Yuryi arrived just as they were leaving, and I still had my two daughters industrially sucking on my breasts. I was more than a little busy and confused.
“Is everything alright?” Yuryi asked looking around the room at us and everything else.
“You must be Yuryi,” the nurse said.
“Yes,” he answered with a smile.
“Good. I’ll only need to go over this once then,” she replied.
“Go over what?” he asked.
“My name is Noreen. I’m a registered nurse and a Witch. I was engaged by Madailein Kavanagh to remain here with your wife and daughters during their stay at the hospital. Because your husband is a Dragon, those running the hospital insist that the babies remain in the room with the mother. I’m here to assist you in taking care of the infants. I have been engaged to do this for most of the children of those who are Dragons, or whose spouse is a Dragon for the past twenty-five years or so,” she told us.
Her explanation certainly seemed to explain some of what had been going on and where I was. I was so tired though, and it was a minute or so before I remembered that I hadn’t answered Yuryi.
“I think it is, Yuryi,” I told him before noticing that my daughters appeared to have finished and gone to sleep. Noreen had noticed it also.
“We’ll need to burp both of them before I return them to their crib, or you could keep them with you for a time if you want to,” she told me, while Yuryi looked on but didn’t say anything.
“You’re right handed, so I’ll take the one on your left side to burp,” she told me and handed me a small towel like the one that she had on her shoulder before taking Angela to burp her. I worked on Alicia, who soon burped and spit out a bit of my milk.
“I think it would be best to put them back in the crib for a time, so I can get some sleep without worrying about them moving or falling out of the bed,” I told her. Before she could move either daughter, Yuryi had a question.
“Could I hold them for a short time?” he asked. Noreen looked at me, and I sort of shrugged.
“He is their father after all,” I said and she handed Angela to him before taking Alicia from me to hand him. I actually saw both infants smile when their father touched them with his mind.
“Yes,” he said with a huge smile. “Two little Female Dragons. They will be terrors when they grow up,” he finished before handing both of them back to Noreen very carefully. She deposited them in their crib one at a time. This was also when Dr. Graham arrived.
“Your daughters are both healthy Long Lived Individuals and Dragons. You will be able to leave the hospital in three more days,” she told us before turning to Noreen.
“I wasn’t expecting to see you Noreen. Has the Queen hired you to be here or the parents?” she asked.
“I’m working for the Queen, just like always,” Noreen told her with a smile.
“I’ll see you and the twins in a month,” the doctor reminded me before departing. Noreen looked a bit puzzled.
“She looks a lot better and younger than she has previously,” she remarked.
“It’s all in her genes,” Yuryi said, but that was all before he left also, after giving me a long kiss. I went back to sleep until the next feeding.
We were released from the hospital late on the morning of the third day. I said released, but it was more like we were encouraged to leave then by the hospital’s management. Yuryi and I said our goodbyes to Noreen before he handed her an envelope and wished her well. She was very surprised when she opened it.
“But I’m being paid by the Queen,” she protested on recovering.
“Yes, but we are the ones who appreciated your help while we were here,” I told her. We all walked out of the Women’s Pavilion together. Yuryi and I were carrying our daughters. On reaching the parking lot, Noreen went to her car, and Yuryi transferred the four of us to our house east of Atlanta. Beverly Ross was waiting there for us with my wheelchair.
“You, sit!” she told me in a demanding voice when we appeared in the living room. Since I was still tired and sore, though nowhere near as much as originally, I sat down in the wheelchair. I needed to hand Alicia to Beverly to do that. She hardly made a sound at the exchange, as Beverly does have a strong Talent, which she detected. Both Noreen and Yuryi had worked on healing me with their Magic healing spells while I was in the hospital.
Beverly needed to hand Alicia to Yuryi who had already handed Angela to me once I was seated. Even at only three days old both of our daughters not only wanted but demanded to be held by their father. Yuryi had told me that it was the Dragon in them that sought his reassuring presence. It was obvious, to me at least, that they would be daddies girls growing up.
Once everyone was settled again, Beverly pushed the wheelchair to the library, and Yuryi activated the Portal there. The return to the Minnesota house was like that of a King or Queen returning from battle. All of the staff were there to greet us and meet the new members of the family. There were oohs and ahhs from all of the women and handshakes for Yuryi from all of the male staff. All of the women also wanted to hold the girls for a time.
The twins didn’t take too well to that and let us know that they were unhappy by screaming loudly. To solve the problem, Yuryi and Beverly remained near them while the others held them for a short time.
“They will need time to become accustomed to all of you,” Yuryi told them. “Right now everything is new to them, and they are having a problem adjusting to that,” he finished. The staff was a bit disappointed but quickly realized that at three days old it was a rather usual occurrence.
Yuryi transferred us up to the master bedroom, so we could all rest shortly after that. The small room adjacent to it had been prepared for the twins to use with all new furnishings and many packages of diapers. I would be using it part of the time when feeding them and taking care of them. Perhaps even sleeping with them when necessary.
My older daughters, Ilene and Julia had visited us for a few days during the week between Christmas and New Year. They had been surprised that I had gotten go large and was using a wheelchair. They hadn’t stayed long, saying that they needed to get back to their jobs and to prepare for the start of the new semester which began the first full week of January.
