Morning came too soon, the harsh light of the sun peeking through the curtains and casting a warm glow over their entangled forms. Karen stirred first, her eyes fluttering open to find Jason’s peaceful face just inches from hers. A soft smile played on her lips as she took in the sight of her son, feeling a warmth that went beyond the simple act of motherhood. Their bond had evolved into something more profound, something that neither of them could fully comprehend yet.
They had a few hours before Mr. Hanru would arrive to take them to the small airport on the outskirts of Pretoria. The safari was about to begin, and with it, a new chapter in their lives. Karen knew that the experiences they would share would bring them even closer together, not just as mother and son, but as two people discovering the beauty of the world and themselves.
When Mr. Hanru knocked on the door, Karen and Jason quickly donned their safari gear, trying to compose themselves after the intense night they had shared. They stepped into the hallway, and Mr. Hanru greeted them with a knowing smile. “Ah, good morning,” he said, his dark eyes twinkling. “I trust you slept well?”
Karen felt a blush creep up her neck, but she returned his smile with a nod. “Very well, thank you,” she replied, her voice steady.
They followed Mr. Hanru through the hotel lobby and into the waiting vehicle, the air thick with the anticipation of their impending adventure. The drive to the small airport was a scenic journey, the landscape of Pretoria rolling by in a blur of greenery and distant wildlife. The airport itself was a bustling hub of activity, with a line of Cessna 172N aircraft standing sentinel, their sleek forms gleaming in the early morning light.
Mr. Hanru led them to a pair of planes, introducing them to their pilots with a flourish. “Allow me to present to you Ezelda Cilliers and Rudi Degemaar,” he announced with a proud smile. Ezelda was a young black woman with a head full of tight, neatly-braided hair that fell to her waist. Her smile was warm and welcoming, her eyes a piercing brown that seemed to see straight to their souls. Rudi, on the other hand, was a towering figure, his height emphasized by the leather pilot’s cap perched atop his head. His skin was the deep brown of African coffee, and his muscular build suggested a man accustomed to facing the challenges of the wilderness head-on.
Both Ezelda and Rudi had a look of excitement in their eyes, as if they couldn’t wait to show them the beauty of their country from the skies. “We’re ready to take you on the adventure of a lifetime,” Ezelda said, her voice melodic and inviting.
Karen and Jason followed them to the small, four-seater Cessna, the metal body warm to the touch from the morning sun. Rudi opened the door, revealing the cramped cabin, the smell of leather and gasoline mingling in the air. They climbed in, buckling themselves into the sturdy seats as Ezelda went through the pre-flight checklist with an air of confidence that was reassuring.
Rudi took his place in the pilot’s seat, his broad shoulders filling the space as he turned to address them. “Remember to keep your safety belts tight,” he said, his voice a gentle rumble. “It’s going to be a bit of a bumpy ride, but I promise you, it’s going to be worth it.”
Jason felt a thrill of excitement race through him as the engine roared to life. He looked over at Karen, her eyes wide with anticipation. “Mom,” he whispered, his voice filled with awe, “I can’t believe we’re actually doing this. My friends back home are probably still playing video games and dreaming of going on a tour like this.”
Karen chuckled, her eyes reflecting the city lights. “Life’s full of surprises, isn’t it?” she said, her hand brushing against his leg. The touch was innocent, but the memory of their earlier encounter sent a jolt of electricity through him.
Rudi’s voice cut through the silence, his deep baritone a stark contrast to the whine of the engine as it came to life. “Alright, Mrs. Karen,” he called over his shoulder, “we’re about to make our way to the runway. Hold on tight!”
Karen felt a surge of excitement as the plane began to taxi, the vibrations rumbling through her body. She squeezed Jason’s hand, feeling his excitement mirrored in his grip. They watched as Ezelda, her voice smooth and professional, spoke into the radio, coordinating with the control tower. The headset she wore made her look like a seasoned pilot, a stark contrast to the youthful beauty that had greeted them moments ago.
The engine’s pitch grew louder, the plane picking up speed as Rudi guided it down the runway. The wind buffeted against the small aircraft, whipping through the open windows and tugging at their hair. The lights of the city grew smaller and smaller until they were nothing but a distant glow against the horizon.
Ezelda leaned back, her eyes gleaming as she addressed them over the engine’s roar. “We’ve got about five hours of flying ahead of us,” she said, her voice clear and calm despite the noise. “The first two hours will take us to the edge of the savanna, and once we’re there, we’ll spend an hour circling the area so you can get a good look at the wildlife. Then it’s another two hours back to Pretoria.”
The information was a mix of excitement and reality check for Jason. Five hours in a cramped plane was a long time, but the thought of seeing the savanna from the air was thrilling. Karen squeezed his hand, her own excitement palpable. “We’re going to see so much,” she whispered, her eyes sparkling.
As they climbed into the sky, the city of Pretoria shrunk into a sea of lights before them, the sprawling metropolis giving way to the vast, untouched wilderness that was South Africa. The plane jolted and bobbed as it climbed in altitude, but Rudi’s steady hand on the controls was reassuring. Ezelda’s voice was a soothing presence over the headset, her words painting a picture of the land they were flying over.
“Is this your first time on a flight tour in Africa?” she asked, her eyes meeting Karen’s in the small cabin mirror. Karen nodded, her heart racing with a mix of excitement and fear. “It’s absolutely breathtaking, isn’t it?”
Jason leaned over, his voice filled with wonder. “It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before,” he said, his eyes glued to the window. “It’s like we’re flying over a giant patchwork quilt of colors.”
Ezelda chuckled, her smile warm and genuine. “It’s quite the sight, isn’t it?” she said, her eyes sparkling with the love of her homeland. “Every time I do this, I’m reminded just how vast and diverse this continent is.”
Karen nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. “It’s incredible,” she murmured, her gaze locked on the ever-shrinking city below them. “I’ve seen so much in my life, but nothing compares to this.”
Ezelda’s eyes searched hers for a moment before she leaned in, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “I’ve heard about your wrestling career,” she said, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. “How do you do it? How do you become a champion?”
Karen felt a smile tug at her lips. It had been a long time since she had talked shop with someone who wasn’t in the business. “It’s a mix of strength, strategy, and showmanship,” she said, her voice steady despite the turbulence. “You’ve got to be able to read your opponent, know their moves before they make them. And you’ve got to have the guts to go all out, to give the audience a show they’ll never forget.”
Rudi nodded, his eyes reflecting a newfound respect. “That’s what I thought,” he said, his deep voice a rumble in the cabin. “I used to watch wrestling in high school. Those guys were like gods to me.”
The conversation turned to their personal lives, with Karen sharing stories of her days in the ring and the challenges of balancing her career with motherhood. Ezelda spoke of her own journey to become a pilot in a country where the skies were still largely dominated by men. The bond grew stronger as they shared their triumphs and tribulations, their voices mixing with the steady drone of the engine.
“You know,” Rudi said, his eyes flicking between the instruments and the horizon, “Ezelda here is something of a prodigy herself.” He nodded towards her, a proud smile playing on his lips. “She graduated from flight school when she was just nineteen. Not many can say that.”
Jason’s curiosity was piqued. He turned to the young pilot, his voice a mix of awe and envy. “How did you do it?” he asked, his eyes wide with admiration. “How did you become so good?”
Ezelda’s smile was warm and genuine, her eyes never leaving the horizon as she spoke. “It was about responsibility to my family,” she said, her voice filled with a quiet determination. “I’m the oldest of nine siblings, and when my dad passed away, my mom was left to run the farm on her own. She works so hard, with a salary that barely keeps us afloat.”
Her gaze shifted to the side, meeting Karen’s in the mirror. “But she believed in me, even when others said it was a waste of time for a girl to learn to fly. I faced a lot of challenges, from the physical demands to the financial strain. The pilot scholarship was the only way I could afford it.”
“And here you are,” Karen said, her voice filled with admiration. “Soaring above it all.”
“Yes,” Ezelda said, her smile broadening. “But it’s not just about me. It’s about showing the other young girls in my village that they can reach for the skies too.”
Rudi nodded solemnly, his eyes never leaving the horizon. “It’s true,” he said, his voice filled with a quiet passion. “Most African women, they stay on the ground. They become teachers, nurses, farmers. They’re the backbone of our communities, but so few ever look up and think ‘I could do that’. It’s a different kind of strength, a different kind of courage.”
Karen felt a kinship with Ezelda in that moment, recognizing the fierce determination that had driven them both to pursue their dreams despite the odds. “I can see that,” she said, her voice filled with respect. “The same thing that drives me to step into the wrestling ring, to show that a woman can be just as powerful and unstoppable as any man.”
Rudi turned in his seat, his gaze lingering on both Karen and Ezelda with admiration. “You two,” he said, his voice gruff, “you’re both warriors in your own right.”
The flight was smooth once they reached the savanna, the turbulence giving way to a serene calmness that belied the powerful engines beneath them. They flew low over the vast expanse of grasslands, the early morning sun casting long shadows across the landscape. The sight of wildlife below was breathtaking – herds of zebras and antelope dotted the plains, their movements a dance of survival choreographed by millennia of evolution.
“You should get your camera ready, Jason” Ezelda called out, her voice filled with excitement. “We’re approaching the spots where we usually see the big cats.”
Jason’s heart raced as he fumbled with his camera, his anticipation palpable. Through the window, the savanna stretched out in every direction, a canvas of gold and green with spots of wildlife scattered throughout. He had never seen anything so vast and untouched, and the thought of capturing it all was overwhelming.
As if reading his mind, Rudi’s voice crackled through the headset. “Look to your left, we’ve got a pride of lions on the move.”
Jason’s eyes shot to the window, and he saw the majestic animals moving with a lazy grace that belied their predatory instincts. The tawny forms of the lions contrasted starkly against the emerald grass, their tails flicking in the early morning light. The sight was surreal, a moment frozen in time that he knew would stay with him forever. He snapped picture after picture, his heart racing with excitement.
Rudi leaned over the controls, his eyes crinkling with a smile. “Ever been this close to a lion before?”
Karen’s heart was in her throat as the plane descended, the roar of the engine mixing with the distant call of the predators. The landscape grew larger in the windows, the blades of grass on the savanna resolving into a carpet of gold that stretched out as far as the eye could see. The lions below grew from tiny dots into majestic beasts, their manes fluttering in the breeze.
As they approached, Jason’s excitement grew palpable. He leaned closer to the window, his camera poised to capture the moment. “Look, Mom,” he whispered, his voice filled with awe. “They’re so big!”
But as they drew closer, his enthusiasm was replaced with confusion. In the distance, he spotted a group of five lions lying on the ground, surrounded by five armed men and a jeep. The scene was jarring, a stark reminder of the harsh reality that sometimes intruded on the natural beauty of the wilderness. He snapped a picture quickly, his finger trembling slightly.
