The next morning, Jason made a decision that surprised Karen. He announced that he wouldn’t be going to the highschool with her that day, opting instead to join her at the airline office. Karen felt a mix of pride and concern. She knew he was still dealing with their new dynamic, but she also knew that he needed stability and routine. She hoped that their shared love for adventure and wrestling could be a bridge between their roles as lovers and mother and son.
Mr. Hanru arrived promptly in the jeep, a reliable beast of a vehicle that had seen them through their African ordeal. Karen climbed in the back, feeling a strange sense of relief at the distance it created between her and her son. She watched as Jason took the passenger seat up front, his shoulders tense, his gaze out the window. She knew he was lost in thought, and she wondered if he was replaying their encounter from the night before.
The engine roared to life, and they set off through the quiet streets of Pretoria, the early morning light casting long shadows across the pavement. Karen took a deep breath, trying to compose herself. The air in the jeep was thick with tension, the silence between them a stark contrast to the passionate whispers of the night. She reached out, her hand brushing against Jason’s thigh, but he didn’t react.
As they approached the high school, Mr. Hanru turned to Karen with a knowing smile. “Miss Karen, I hope you’re ready for another day of inspiring young minds,” he said, his voice carrying the same warmth it had the day they’d met. Karen nodded, her eyes flicking to the rearview mirror to catch a glimpse of Jason’s profile. He was staring straight ahead, his jaw clenched tightly.
“I’ll drop you off first, then take Jason to Ezelda,” Mr. Hanru offered, his gaze flicking between them briefly before returning to the road.
Karen nodded, a tight smile playing on her lips. “That would be great,” she said, trying to keep her voice even. She knew that giving Jason some space was the right thing to do, but the thought of being apart from him, even for a short while, was painful.
As they pulled up to the high school, Mr. Hanru put the jeep in park, and Karen leaned over to give Jason a quick kiss on the cheek. “See you after practice,” she whispered, her eyes searching his.
Jason nodded, his expression unreadable as he climbed out of the vehicle. He watched as Karen slammed the door shut and strutted towards the school, her hips swaying in a way that made his heart race. He couldn’t help but admire her, even in her simple workout gear.
As Mr. Hanru pulled away from the curb, Jason turned his gaze to the passing scenery, his mind racing with thoughts of the night before. He felt a mix of excitement and anxiety as he anticipated seeing Ezelda again. He knew he had to tell her about his and Karen’s newfound relationship, but the words felt heavy on his tongue.
“Jason,” Mr. Hanru’s voice broke through his thoughts, “I’ve been thinking.” The driver’s eyes remained on the road ahead, his hands steady on the wheel. “Your mother, she’s quite the inspiration, isn’t she?”
Jason nodded, swallowing the lump in his throat. “Yeah, she is.”
Mr. Hanru’s eyes remained on the road, his voice thoughtful. “You know, Jason,” he began, “I think your mother has found her true calling here in Pretoria. The way she teaches those girls, the passion she has for wrestling ... it’s incredible.”
Jason nodded, his gaze fixed on the passing buildings. “Yeah, she loves it,” he murmured, his voice tight with unspoken tension.
Mr. Hanru’s eyes flicked to the rearview mirror, studying him for a moment before speaking again. “But why don’t you come along, too?” he asked, his tone curious. “You’re a good wrestler yourself. I’m sure you could help her.”
Jason nodded, his mind racing with thoughts of the exotic places they’d seen in Africa. “Yeah,” he said, his voice filled with a newfound enthusiasm. “But there’s so much more I want to explore, too. I want to know about the different tribes, their cultures, their languages and the exotic places.”
Mr. Hanru chuckled, a knowing glint in his eye. “Ah, the adventurous spirit of the young,” he said, his eyes meeting Jason’s in the mirror. “Well, I’ve got just the place for you. I promise to take you to the Jiilindi Wilderness tomorrow. You’ll meet my people, the Jiilindi tribe, where I come from.”
Jason’s eyes lit up with excitement, the tension in his shoulders dissipating slightly. “Really?” he asked, his voice filled with hope. “That would be amazing!”
Mr. Hanru nodded, his smile growing wider. “Of course, my young friend,” he said, his eyes never leaving the road. “You see, I was born and raised in the Jiilindi Wilderness. I know every tree, every animal, every secret path. You’ll be as safe with me as you would be in your own mother’s arms.”
Jason couldn’t help but feel a thrill of excitement at the thought of exploring the place Mr. Hanru called home. The tension from the night before began to ease, and he leaned back in his seat, feeling the vibrations of the jeep beneath him. “What’s it like there?” he asked, his curiosity piqued.
Mr. Hanru’s eyes remained on the road, but his voice was filled with warmth as he spoke of the Jiilindi Wilderness. “It’s a place of beauty and danger,” he said, his accent thickening with nostalgia. “Two days of travel, but I promise you, it’s worth every bump in the road.”
Jason nodded eagerly, feeling the weight of the night’s conversation with Karen slowly lifting. “Mom will let me go,” he said, his voice filled with newfound resolve. “She knows I love adventure, and she trusts you.”
Mr. Hanru’s eyes crinkled with a knowing smile. “Good, good,” he said, patting Jason’s shoulder. “We’ll leave after drop your mom to practice tomorrow. It’s a journey you won’t forget.”
The rest of the ride to Ezelda’s office was spent in a comfortable silence, both lost in their own thoughts. When they arrived, Jason was surprised to find Ezelda waiting for them outside, her eyes searching his as he climbed out of the jeep. He knew she could sense something was different, and his heart raced as he approached her.
“Jason,” she greeted warmly, her eyes searching his before flicking to Mr. Hanru. “Where is your mommy?”
Jason felt a twinge of guilt at the innocence in her question. “She’s at the high school,” he said, his voice a little too casual. “Starting the wrestling program.”
Ezelda’s smile grew even wider, her eyes lighting up. “Ah, that is wonderful news,” she exclaimed, clapping her hands together. “I am so happy to hear that she is sharing her gift with the young women here. Pretoria needs more strong, empowered females, especially in sports.”
Jason nodded, feeling a sense of pride swell in his chest. “Yeah, she’s really excited about it,” he said, trying to keep the conversation light. “Mayor Alizea Potgieter offered her the position, and she accepted. She’ll be starting in a month.”
Ezelda’s smile grew, and she stepped closer, placing a comforting hand on his arm. “And what about you, Jason?” she asked, her eyes searching his. “What will you be doing while she’s busy with her new role?”
Jason took a deep breath, feeling a rush of excitement. “Mr. Hanru offered to take me to the Jiilindi Wilderness,” he said, his voice filled with wonder. “To explore the land and learn about the different tribes and their cultures.”
Ezelda’s eyes lit up with interest. “Ah, the Jiilindi,” she said, her voice filled with respect. “A place of great beauty and wisdom. It is not for the faint of heart, but with Mr. Hanru as your guide, you will be in good hands.”
Jason nodded, his excitement growing. “I can’t wait to learn more about Africa,” he said, his voice filled with enthusiasm. “I’ve always been fascinated by the different cultures and the wildlife here.”
Ezelda’s eyes sparkled with understanding. “Mr. Hanru is a wise man,” she said, her voice soft. “He will show you things that most outsiders never get to see.” She leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper.
“But be careful, Jason,” she added, her gaze serious. “The wilderness can be unforgiving. It’s a place where you must respect the land and its inhabitants.”
Jason nodded, his thoughts drifting to the night before. He hadn’t had the chance to ask Ezelda about her own experience with the crash. “Ezelda,” he began tentatively, “How about your plane crash?”
Her eyes searched his, a hint of pain flitting across her features before she spoke. “Ah, the crash,” she said, her voice solemn. “It was a terrible day, but we are all alive, thanks to your mother’s strength and bravery.” She paused, her gaze drifting to the horizon. “And thanks to company, I have been given a new opportunity.”
“A new opportunity?” Jason asked, his curiosity piqued.
Ezelda nodded, her gaze focusing back on him. “Yes,” she said, her voice filled with gratitude. “The company I work for has provided me with a new plane to continue my conservation efforts. They were so impressed with our survival story and your mother’s courage that they want me to continue my work, spreading awareness about the poaching crisis.”
Jason felt a pang of excitement. “Can I see it?” he asked, his voice filled with childlike wonder.
Ezelda’s smile grew. “Of course,” she said, taking his hand. “Come with me.”
They walked around the office building and approached the airfield. The hangar was a sprawling structure of corrugated metal, the hum of engines and the distant squawk of birds echoing through the vast space. The scent of aviation fuel and oil hung heavy in the air, mingling with the dust that danced in the shafts of light that pierced the gaps in the metal roof.
Ezelda led the way, her stride purposeful as she navigated the labyrinth of planes and equipment. “Here she is,” she said proudly, gesturing to a sleek Cessna 210 parked at the far end of the hangar. The aircraft gleamed in the soft light, its green and white livery a stark contrast to the dull gray of the concrete floor.
Jason’s eyes widened as he took in the sight of the plane. It was smaller than the one they’d flown in before, but it had a certain charm to it, a sense of agility that spoke of adventure and freedom. He could almost feel the thrill of the open skies, the rush of wind in his face, the untamed spirit of the land beneath them.
Ezelda led him closer, her hand resting on the wing as she spoke with pride about the aircraft’s capabilities. “This beauty can handle the toughest terrains,” she said, her voice filled with affection. “And she’s fast, too. She’ll get us to the Jiilindi Wilderness in no time.”
Jason’s eyes were wide with fascination as he peered into the cockpit, his curiosity piqued by the array of instruments and controls. “How does it all work?” he asked, his voice filled with wonder.
Ezelda chuckled, her hand resting on the control yoke. “It’s a bit complicated, but I’ll do my best to explain,” she said, her eyes sparkling with amusement. She began pointing out the various gauges and switches, explaining their functions with a simplicity that made it all seem less daunting.
As she talked, Jason felt his mind racing with questions. He had always been curious about planes, but now he had a newfound respect for the machines that had brought him and his mother here, and had played a part in their incredible adventure. He listened intently, his eyes darting from her hands to the instruments and back again.
