Chapter 12: Winter Break

“Tomorrow, we have to go back to the palace,” Ruth muttered under her breath so just Olaf and his current lap sitter could hear her. “You three have to attend a formal dinner. You must escort both your concubines,” she added as she looked around to make sure nobody else overheard her. They initially planned to spend the winter break at the condo while most of the other students went home. Olaf had yet to properly take the virginity of his two concubines but both of them still received a tongue-lashing at least once every weekend.

“What is the occasion?” Vanessa asked as she wrapped her arms around Olaf’s neck as she cuddled on his lap. They were in the seniors’ lounge of the school, where the seniors and their guests relaxed between and after classes. The other students have gotten used to Olaf having two ‘girlfriends’, girlfriends who were not jealous of each other and had no problem showing a lot of public displays of affection towards Olaf.

“The duke just returned from Pleiades Prime, from attending a meeting of the imperial council,” Ruth commented.

“I didn’t even know he left,” Olaf muttered.

“We were a bit busy with schoolwork,” Alice said with a smile. She was sitting behind Olaf but close enough to hear what was being said. “He left with the Taygete, Colonel Crenshaw ordered me to stay with you, and to go to college with you. I’m officially on permanent detached duty from the Imperial Marine Corps.”

“You are an imperial marine?” Helm blurted out. He and Burt, a classmate of Olaf, had sat down with Alice. Burt seemed to have a crush on Alice and had been trying for most of the semester to flirt with her. Alice realized she had just outed herself to the world. “What on earth are you doing here?”

“What she is not saying is that the commander of the Imperial Marine Battalion on the Taygete is her uncle,” Olaf said out loud. “He got her into the marines when her asteroid home was destroyed. I kind of convinced her to finish high school and go to university with me.”

“You two are not a couple as well, are you?” Burt asked, clearly disappointed.

“Very close friends,” Olaf responded.

“Friends with benefits?” Helm asked with a lewd smirk on his face. He and Peet, their other roommate, regularly teased Olaf about his two girls who always hung onto his arms at the same time.

“No! At least not yet,” Alice said as she blushed and looked back down at the book she was reading.

“What were you guys talking about?” Peet asked.

“Ruth just mentioned that the duke just came back from Pleiades Prime on official imperial business.” Alice explained.

“Did he come back on the Taygete?” Olaf asked.

“No, he left with the Taygete, but I think he returned on some other navy ship,” Ruth explained. “As a member of the imperial council he and his predecessor both made use of any available navy ship.”

“How do you know so much about the duke’s business,” Bert asked.

“My mother is working in the office of the duke,” Ruth explained with a shrug.

“Maybe you should not reveal the duke’s movements to the public,” Ingrid commented as she and Betta, two more classmates of Olaf and friends of Helm, Peet, and Bert, also joined the group.

“I only tell what I know after it happened,” Ruth said as she gave Ingrid a level stare. “I know how to keep official secrets.”

“Have you ever seen the new viscount, the new heir to the duke?” Betta asked excitedly.

“Yes, I have,” Ruth said as she looked back at the two girls without blinking an eye or hesitating.

“What is he like?” Betta asked as she moved closer.

“Why is he never seen in public?” Ingrid asked. “I don’t think there is even a photo of him.”

“I can’t answer any of those questions,” Ruth said. “If the palace discovered that I am revealing anything about the people living there, my mom will be in trouble.”

“I have heard that he is a very quiet yet sexy guy,” Vanessa said.

“Where have you heard that from?” Ingrid asked.

“I am a family friend of the Baron of Lindholm,” Vanessa said with a shrug. “I actually saw him once at a formal event.”

“For somebody who is friends with nobility, you never drop names like some of the others like to do,” Betta said accusingly.

“No need to,” Vanessa said. “Besides, the baron’s oldest son is a bit of a jerk in my eyes.”

“What does he look like?” Betta asked excitedly. Olaf did his best to tune out the female chatter about guys and how dreamy or handsome they were.

The next day after the last class, the group left for the condo where Alec met them, and they all flew to the palace. Olaf asked Vanessa if she wanted to go home for a while, but she just shook her head and clung to him. Aster nodded her head and clung to his other arm.

“You are now our home, our man, our life,” Vanessa said. “Besides, Mom and Dad will be here tonight for the formal dinner.”

Olaf was standing next to his grandmother just inside the door, welcoming the guests, when Baron Rudolf of Lindholm Province arrived with his wife and his heir. Olaf was not used to the formal reception lines and was just following orders from the dowager duchess. The duke was standing nearby chatting softly to a blushing Aster, who was dressed in a new version of the traditional fisher-folk dresses that the island women loved to make and wear. Then Vanessa slipped in next to him smiling at him.

“I outrank my own mother,” Vanessa muttered just as her father bowed before the dowager duchess.

“Not pregnant yet?” Baron Rudolf asked his daughter as he shook Olaf’s hand after bowing to the young viscount. Vanessa blushed prettily and shook her head. The baroness also blushed as she curtsied to Olaf before she rushed to hug her daughter. The two instantly left the reception line to have a private chat. Olaf was glad to see that Derick Rasmus, heir to the baron, was not displaying a fake ribbon like the last time they met. He was also quite shy towards Olaf.

When Viscount Dirk, his wife, and Herman arrived, Herman seemed very eager to chat with him, but he was still part of the receiving line. Once Olaf was free from the reception obligation, he noticed that Herman was surrounded by a few younger girls, daughters of a few barons.

Olaf found himself seated between his mistress, Lady Thelma, and the plump and giggling wife of another baron while his own concubines were seated with the duke and Baron Lindholm. Olaf was a bit concerned about how Aster would fit in with the Ceres nobility, but the duke seemed very chatty towards her, and the baron sitting on her other side seemed totally fascinated by her. She was smiling shyly for most of the dinner.

“What is Pleiades Prime like, Your Grace?” The wife of one of the barons asked during dinner.

“It is an amazing system,” the duke responded. “I would say the most spectacular part is the space station known as Pleiades Prime Habitat except everybody just refers to it as PPH. The planet where the capitol city is located is called Secundus. The really interesting part is that the original spaceship in which our ancestors arrived here, is still part of the Pleiades Prime Habitat. It is huge, Both the original spaceship and the habitat were built inside huge hollowed-out asteroids. The entire structure is several kilometers long and about two kilometers in diameter. It looks like a cigar. It is nearly the same distance as the planet from the sun, but its orbital speed has been adapted so it is orbiting the sun on its own. The result is that it stays near the planet as both of them orbit the sun. There are more people living inside it than on the entire planet of Secundus.”

After the dinner ended, the ladies all went to the various restrooms as the men gathered in the library with their drinks. Olaf was being surrounded by a small group of awkward young men, the few heirs of some of the barons who attended the dinner, while the older men surrounded the duke. None of the younger men except for Herman, heir to Viscount Dirk, felt comfortable chatting with Olaf but they eagerly listened as Herman and Olaf talked about school.

“Baron Rudolf, can I have a word with you and any of the council members in my office for a moment please. Dirk, you and Olaf might as well join us.” The duke said. “It will not be long.” The duke led the two viscounts and four barons into his office and invited everybody to sit. There was not enough seating, so Olaf stayed standing as he leaned against the windowsill. He could see a few of the barons were confused about what to do, to offer their seats to him or to ignore him.

“This is something that came across my desk when I got back from Secundus,” Duke Wilbur said. “It does not seem to have the same pattern as the last trouble we had but it could possible grow and become a problem. I had a message from Baron Hillshire, on the far side of the continent. He drew my attention to local news reports about some low levels of civil disobedience in the barony next to him, in the Zephyr district.”

“They are so far from here that I am not surprised that we have not heard anything,” Baron Rudolf said, with the other barons nodding their heads in agreement. “What type of civil disobedience?”

“Not yet riots,” the duke said. “Parades and peaceful protests. Hillshire could not tell me what the grievances were, just that the protests were becoming more frequent and bigger. I would like some suggestions. We should nip that in the bud before it gets out of control and starts spreading.”

“There is that new militia base near there,” one of the older barons commented. “Maybe we can just send in the troops and squash it early.”

“I would like to know why they are protesting before I do that,” the duke said.

“Call Baron Zephyr here and get him to make a report,” another baron said.

“You look like you have an idea, Olaf?” Viscount Dirk said.

“I was just thinking of sending an investigator there, talk to the people, find out what is bothering them,” Olaf said.

“Hillshire did mention that the protesters all seem to be young kids,” Duke Wilbur said.

“Maybe I can go have a quick look,” Olaf suggested. “I will go incognito, talk to some kids of my age and get an idea what is going on.”

“You are going to have to take all of your security detail with you,” the duke said.

After the formal dinner, when all the guests had left, only Baron Rudolf and Viscount Dirk and their families were left behind as the men discussed Olaf’s suggested mission to the opposite side of the single huge continent on the planet. Olaf brought Vanessa, Aster, Ruth, Alice, and Alec in to let them know of his planned absence for the rest of the winter break.

“I’m obviously part of your security team,” Alice insisted.

“I need to go with you,” Ruth demanded as well.

“I can see us needing a team of eight, not counting me and Corporal Alice,” Alec said. “Four to accompany Lord Olaf and the ladies, and four more to be in reserve. They will stay with the hovercraft and be ready to do some rapid extractions if things go south unexpectedly.”

“Lord Olaf has access to two under-cover hovercraft,” The head of security for the palace, a militia major said. “Why not take the second hovercraft as a backup as well?”

The single continent on Ceres spanned from just below the equator on its most southern edge, all the way to just inside the northern pole circle and covered about a third of the planet’s circumference. The capitol city of New Oslo was on the eastern edge, a bit less than halfway towards the northern edge. Most of the population occupied a relatively thin band of land since the far north was full of mountains and glaciers while the part on or near the equator was mostly jungle. There were large sections in the deep interior that were arid but not complete desert.

The two extreme ends of the continent were the two only industrial regions on the planet. While the city of New Oslo was a picturesque city with a population of about three hundred thousand, the region surrounding New Oslo was where all the factories were located. Most of the factory workers also lived within walking distance of their places of employment since most of the housing belonged to the various industrial corporations. The same pattern was true for the far west end of the continent.

As Olaf and his team left New Oslo in the two shuttles for the first of two twelve-hour leg of their trip, they flew over the vast industrial complexes just over the ridge which separated the city from the flatland beyond. There was a definite pattern; large wide-spread factory complexes surrounded by a thin green belt and then blocks of middle-income housing interspersed with five-story apartment complexes for the lower income groups. Each apartment complex had a neat park surrounding it and there were numerous parks forming green islands among the houses.

While the public transport in the city consisted of above-ground trolleys, Olaf already knew that public transport on the factory flats was all underground, as were the heavy cargo transport systems between the various factories and the various space port complexes located closer to the equator. The space ports were privately managed corporations. The space port outside New Oslo was just one of four on the planet, each one independent from the others as well as from the space station in orbit around the planet. The space station was imperial property and fell directly under the jurisdiction of the duke but with the Imperial navy running the station.

The two shuttles climbed to sub-orbital altitudes using their anti-gravity drives and then used their atmospheric propulsion systems. Olaf could still observe the ground directly beneath the shuttle using a private view screen which was fed from high resolution cameras mounted all over the shuttle. Once they were away from the city, the land became much more agricultural in nature. About forty percent of the farms belonged to large corporations with the rest being privately held family farms. The land under the shuttle consisted of numerous small, compact villages surrounded by large open fields. Most of the farmers, even the corporate farming employees, lived in the nearby towns and commuted to the various fields every day.

The two shuttles left New Oslo at sunrise that morning so when they finally landed after about twelve hours flying time, at the halfway point, a small city nestled against a long low maintain ridge towards the north, and surrounded by vast open natural grazing land, it was only mid-afternoon. The city, Thunder City, was the home of the baron of the county called Thunder Valley, a huge farming community about in the middle of the continent.

“The duchess insisted that we spend the night here,” Ruth said as she grabbed her overnight bag and headed for the exit of the shuttle. “I can do with a long soak in a hot tub.”

“Great idea,” Alice said as she followed Ruth.

All of them were wearing civilian clothes and while Olaf had his medallion on him at all times, it was always hidden under his shirt. Even the large group of militia security people were wearing civilian clothes with concealed hand weapons.

“Sims, the viscount and his party are booked into a hotel in the city center.” Alec addressed Sergeant Conrad Sims, his senior NCO. “I will stay near the viscount while you keep the rest of the men under control. You and the men have been booked into the transit hotel here at the airport. I want two troopers to go with me. Pick guys who look young. Pick four more to guard the shuttles. You can exchange them as you want as long as there are two on duty inside each shuttle while they are on the ground.” The sergeant was a bit older than the lieutenant but had a naughty boyish look. Ruth had told Olaf that Sims used to flirt with her before Olaf appeared on the scene but instantly stopped when Ruth attached herself to Olaf.

The hotel that Ruth and Alice led Olaf into was not large, but it was very fancy. The hotel consisted of a single-story structure with the main entrance facing a small, paved garden surrounded by a small urban forest of trees. Through the trees Olaf could make out another nearly identical structure on the other side of the garden. There was a steel fence on the far side of the garden with a large steel gate blocking access to the other building. The gardens between the two buildings held some outdoor eating and entertaining areas. Even the reception desk was half outside, under a porch.

“Yes, this is the hotel,” the cute female receptionist said as Ruth asked her a question. Ruth took control of the group the moment they got off the open trolley that brought them the short distance from the airfield. Olaf, Alec, and the two privates hung back as Ruth and Alice took control. “That building over there belongs to the baron, his official residence. Oh...,” she exclaimed as she looked at the computer screen as she processed their booking.

“Something wrong?” Ruth asked.

“No, ah, I was just caught on the wrong foot when I saw who paid for the two suites,” The girls muttered. “We only have the four luxury suites, other than all the other regular rooms in the back. Usually it is only the baron who rents those suites when he has visitors.” She looked up and then glanced at the group. Olaf was watching, because she was a cute young girl, but he turned slightly away as she looked at them. He could feel as her eyes landed on him and stayed there.

“Is there a pool or hot tub we can use?” Ruth asked the girl as she showed them to their suites. The girls stopped and looked back in mild confusion as her eyes drifted back to Olaf again.

“There is a pool back where the regular rooms are.” She said as she blushed. “When the occupants of the luxury suites are guests of the baron, they get invited to use the hot tub across the garden in front of the baron’s residence.” Ruth glanced at Alice and then shrugged before she waved the girl on with the others to follow her.

The two suites took up a quarter of the entire U-shaped main building. The remainder of the building consisted of two more luxury suits, a large lounge area and a small dining area. The girl explained that the kitchen usually served any meals wherever the guests wanted to eat, in their suites, or outside under the trees if it was not too hot or too cold. The suites themselves consisted of a lounge area with two large bedrooms and a smaller bedroom with twin beds in it. Each of the three rooms had its own bathroom.

“You two will be guarding these two suites,” Alec decided as he addressed the two troopers after the receptionist girl had left them alone. “I suggest each of you grab a suite and guard it. You two get to sleep in the small room in each suite.”

“I guess you and I can share one suite and the ladies can have the other suite,” Olaf suggested to Alec. Both of them looked at Ruth for confirmation. The two girls shrugged and headed towards a room each.

The kitchen contacted Ruth and suggested that they eat outside under the trees because the weather was nice and mild and the sun was about to go down. Olaf and Alec showered first after spending most of the day in a shuttle and then went outside to meet with the ladies. Both the women were dressed in dresses and looked quite attractive. The two troopers also changed clothes and were hovering in the background as the others met out front. Besides four tables, there was also a large fire pit with a fire burning in it.

The four of them were sitting around a circular table with seating for six people while the two ‘guards’ kept a discreet distance out of sight but close enough to keep an eye on them as two kitchen staff members started carrying out their meal. The first discrepancy Olaf noticed was that the kitchen staff also brought out plates and covered dishes to the table next to theirs.

“Relax, Alec,” Ruth commented when the young officer kept looking around and looking awkward.

“It’s one thing to know my place when I’m on duty and doing my job of protecting my primary,” Alec responded. “It’s totally different when I find myself this close to a nobleman in a social environment.”

“I was told that we have a nobleman visiting us,” an older man said as he appeared from the far side of the small clearing. Alec jumped but Olaf stayed relaxed when he noticed the two troopers were close enough to react if needed, except there were two other uniformed men flanking the new arrival, and eyeing Olaf’s guards suspiciously. The older man looked quite distinguished as he walked closer.

“The local baron?” Alice hissed as she and Ruth also stood when Olaf stood up.

“Forgive me for intruding on your evening meal but I am Cedric Olson, Baron of Thunder Valley,” the man introduced himself as he stopped in front of Olaf.

“No intrusion possible, if you are the baron,” Olaf said as they shook hands. “I am Olaf Ostrander, currently on official duty under orders of Viscount Vasa.”

“Forgive me for assuming but I thought I overt-heard this young man mentioning being in the presence of a nobleman and he definitely had not seen me at that moment,” Baron Cedric said as he nodded to Alec. “Would you mind if I join you? My daughter might join me but then, she also might not.”

“We are only Lord Olaf’s personnel, we can move to another table, My Lord,” Alec offered.

“Nonsense, you can stay where you are,” the baron said as he sat down next to Alice. “It is obvious that you are an officer. Who are your female companions?” he asked of Olaf.

“Corporal Alice Thorn is a member of the Imperial Marine Corps, assigned to try and keep me out of trouble,” Olaf said as he nodded to a blushing Alice. “Miss Ruth Preston is my personal assistant. Lieutenant Alec Devlin is the head of my security team. We are just staying here one night on our way to Zephyr County.”

“Dreary place, Zephyr County,” The baron responded as he shook out his napkin while a server placed a covered plate in front of him. “Let me guess, this Viscount Vasa, he sent you out to find out why Zephyr is such a dreary place?”

“Viscount Vasa?” a young lady asked as she and another slightly older woman approached from the same direction as the baron had come earlier. “You work for Viscount Vasa?” The older woman instantly sat down at the next table where the two uniformed guards had sat down. Olaf and Alec both stood and bowed to the girl as she sat down next to the baron.

“In a way, yes, my lady,” Olaf said.

“Marie, my older daughter,” the baron said as he introduced them. “This young man, by name of Olaf Ostrander, is rather mysterious, says he is working for the heir to the duke of Ceres. His head of security mentioned being in the presence of a nobleman. Makes me wonder what noble rank Lord Olaf has if he is working for the viscount.” Olaf just smirked as he introduced Alice and Ruth.

“Since when would an imperial marine corps corporal act as bodyguard to a local nobleman of any rank?” Lady Marie asked as she smiled at Alice.

“Since the emperor suggested it, My Lady. Oops,” Alice muttered as she slapped her hand over her mouth. Lady Marie giggled.

“The emperor? I heard that he was here, at New Oslo, in person. We might be far from the capital of the system, but we do hear the news,” Marie said as the hotel receptionist and two more servers approached. “Mona, bring a chair and join us,” she called to the pretty receptionist. Her comment caused Alec to jump up. Instead of grabbing a chair, he removed his plate of food and placed it on the other table before he held the chair for Mona.

“Mona, my youngest,” the baron said as he nodded to Mona. “She likes to be busy, so she took over the running of the hotel during busy periods or when school is out.” Mona blushed as she sat down next to Olaf.

“It was a shock to hear our beloved duke had been assassinated,” Marie continued. “We had a lot of speculation about the whereabouts of the very mysterious heir, Viscount Vasa himself. I guess some of our speculations were quite close to the truth if the new duke turned out to be Duke Eric’s younger brother and not his son.”

“Not only that, my lady.” Ruth said with a wide-eyed look. “The new Viscount Vasa has not been seen in public yet either. There is a lot of talk about him, if he was even real, what he looked like, and such.” Her comment resulted in Marie slowly turning her head to look Olaf in the eyes with a surprised look.

“Let me guess, you work for the new heir but have not seen him yet either?” she asked Olaf.

“Next time try a mirror, My Lord,” Mona muttered under her breath. When Marie didn’t react to that comment, Olaf suspected that she had not heard her younger sister’s comment.

“Oh, we have met him,” Ruth responded. “We just don’t think it is our place to discuss him with outsiders.”

“Obviously,” Marie said. “Discussing your master is usually a quick way to get fired.”

“Based on your age, and the fact that you are not displaying a ribbon like so many young lordlings are doing these days, I would guess that you are the second son of a baron, possible a baron high up on the council of barons,” the baron stated. “If you were the heir, anybody’s heir, you would have told us your fake rank or at least informed us of what rank you will end up at some time. The fact that Viscount Vasa is sending you on this mission means you can be trusted.”

“I sure hope I can be trusted,” Olaf said with a chuckle.

“We have another twelve hours in the air tomorrow,” Ruth said after supper was done and all the plates removed. The group was still sitting outside but they had moved a bit closer to the fire pit. “Time to go to bed,” she added as she stood and gave Olaf a look.

“Maybe we will see you again when you return to New Oslo?” Marie asked as she and her maid servant also stood. The baron and his guards had left a while earlier, so it was just Marie and Mona, along with Marie’s maid, sitting outside with Olaf and his group. Mona smiled at Olaf before dropping her gaze and following her sister towards the baron’s mansion.

“You just have to tell the baron who you really are, and you can take Mona back home with you as your next concubine,” Alice commented as they got to their own suites.

“Maybe she can get herself a local baron as husband, making her a baroness, rather than the concubine of a viscount.” Olaf responded.

“Any girl would prefer to be the concubine of one of the senior dukes in the cluster, rather than being a baroness of a rural community,” Ruth added.

“Says the slut who already cornered herself the catch of a lifetime,” Alice smirked at Ruth.

“Except he has not touched me yet,” Ruth pouted back as the two girls turned their heads and gave Olaf lusty looks.

The next morning, they were up early, just after sunrise. Alec and Olaf were already up and dressed when Ruth and Alice showed a very shy but business-like Mona into their suite, with two servants carrying coffee and breakfast. Olaf again experienced the weirdness but also a sense of excitement, when the pretty young girl had problems keeping her eyes off him. Olaf didn’t say anything to her while Alec was in full flirting mode with all three girls. Alice flirted back but Ruth just rolled her eyes at Alec as Lady Mona blushed and glanced at Olaf.

A short while later they were ready to continue their journey. The group were busy getting into the public transport trolley when Mona curtsied to Olaf. She was standing a bit away from the others, so Olaf walked up to her and bowed.

“Greetings to the baron, and please convey our thanks to him,” Olaf said as he bowed.

“These suites will be ready and waiting for your return journey, Lord Vasa,” Mona said softly

“You decided to go with that?” Olaf gently teased her as she blushed even deeper.

“I am known to be sneaky, My Lord,” she said in a near whisper. “A few months after the assassination, I sneaked into my father’s office and read the last few reports he received from the council of barons. One of the reports, from just after the assassination, talked about the new Lord Vasa, a quiet young man with an authoritative presence. The report also stated that the new duke agreed with the council of barons that the new viscount needs to produce heirs as soon as possible, in spite of his youth.”

“Except the two concubines I found myself with at this stage are not ready to have babies yet,” Olaf said softly. “Because I am the heir to the duke, my future viscountess will have to be approved by the emperor himself before I can claim her.”

“Because your viscountess will become the new duchess of Ceres?” Mona said as reality sunk in. “I don’t think even my sister is quite up to becoming the next duchess.” Everybody kept a discreet distance while Olaf and Lady Mona talked. Nobody, not even the quite forward Ruth, made any comments when Mona escorted them during the trip to the airfield.

The two hovercraft shuttles were ready and with the crews onboard when they arrived. Minutes after arriving they lifted off and headed further west. The second leg lasted about eleven hours and like the day before, it seemed as if they were in the air all day but they were tired enough to feel as if they were spending days in the air.
