The bleachers were already half filled when Brittany, Warren, Karla, Maggie, and Quinn met and entered the gymnasium. Both teams were shooting warmup shots on either end of the court. The sound of bouncing basketballs echoed loudly through the large, cavernous structure, as well as occasional clangs as a ball hit a rim or the clear glass backboard. All that added to the cacophony of the ever-increasing crowd.

“There’s a good seat!” Maggie pointed to a small open set of seats a few rows up from the home team’s bench. The group of five walked behind the baseline and climbed up the steps to take their seats. Darius was nowhere to be seen on the court or near the bench.

Then, a loud cheer erupted from the home crowd, causing the group to look around. Darius ran out of the change room, his eyes fixed on the court as his coach called him over to the bench. It was too loud to tell what was being said, but by the body language of the coach, he didn’t seem happy. Darius, though, didn’t seem to care. His eyes looked locked in and focused, which the coach noticed after a moment of ranting. He knew it was a good sign. The only words anyone could make were “Give’em hell!” which was shouted loud enough that the whole crowd cheered loudly.

The remaining three members of the Science Club, Linda, Andrea, and Miguel finally made their way into the gym. They’d managed to clean themselves up enough that they didn’t reek of sex, but if one knew what to look for, they couldn’t hide their happy, well-fucked faces. Linda and Andrea joined the rest of the group, but Miguel moved up higher into the stands to see someone. Just before the whistle blew, he returned with a question for Karla.

“Hey, do you think you could talk to my little sister today?” he asked over another roar of the crowd.

Perplexed, Karla asked, “Really, right now? Couldn’t this wait till Monday?”

“Well, she saw you and wanted to talk before she worked on a dance or some crap this weekend. I don’t understand this stuff and hate my kid sister doing it. Please?” Miguel begged, his eyes faked a pleading look.

Karla rolled her eyes, “Fine, I just hope I don’t miss too much of the game. Save my seat, would you?”

With that, Karla headed up towards Miguel’s sister. She was a cute little Latina with long black hair, a still developing body, and a face that Karla knew would drive the boys crazy once her bodyguard of a brother was out of her way. She sat next to a friend of hers, a tall strawberry blonde girl whose body was curved in all the right spots.

“Hello, Karla!” Gabriela said excitedly as her idol sat down between her and her friend.

“Hello, Gabriela. I heard you had some questions for me?” Karla said politely as she missed Darius winning the tipoff.

“OH MY GOD, YES!” she cried excitedly. “This is my best friend, Willa. She’s a sophomore.” Miguel’s sister motioned towards the pretty strawberry blonde girl, who waved ecstatically but didn’t say anything.

“Hi there,” Karla said to the other girl. Karla’s eyes tried to follow what was happening on the court as the crowd cheered for Darius, scoring with a powerful drive to the basket.

“I don’t want to keep you too long, I just want to know and tips you might have to build a following,” Gabriela said. Her whole body seemed to vibrate with excitement.

Karla smiled. “You have to find a medium and type of content you’d like to specialize in, then be the best you can be at that. What are you looking to do?”

“I don’t know.” The question was stumping the young girl. “What should I do?”

“That comes down to your interests. I wouldn’t recommend jumping on current trends, as that makes you a follower and not a leader. You want to strike out hard with something you’re passionate about. What do you like to do?”

“I like cooking and cleaning,” the Latina girl said. Her smile was as wide as the Great Lakes.

“That could work. I dabbled in cooking content at first, but I couldn’t find an audience. Sometimes, you have to pivot until you find a niche. Maybe you have some family recipes you could share; dress it up a bit and make it exciting,” Karla said, as Darius blocked a shot and slammed the ball down onto his opponent’s face. The crowd roared!

“You know,” Karla continued as the whistle blew for a time-out, “being an influencer isn’t all fun and games. It’s a lot of hard work. I don’t think most people realize that. I get lots of mean messages and creepy weirdos sending me unwanted pictures.”

“You sound like my brother. He doesn’t want me doing this at all.”

Karla frowned. “I’m not here to tell you what to do or not do. I’ll just tell you the truth. It isn’t for everyone, and things can go badly! You’ve got a brother who cares about you and doesn’t want anything to happen to you.”

“I know, but he treats me like a baby,” said Gabriela, crossing her arms over her chest and pouting. If she wanted to look like an adult, this wasn’t the way to do it.

“I know he’s overprotective, but he means well,” Karla said calmly. “He knows the kinds of guys out there who’d prey on a cute girl like you.”

Gabriela looked over to Willa. “Well, he won’t be around to stop me next year.” Her face grinned wide at her friend.

Confused, Karla asked, “What do you mean?”

“Cause he’s going to Penn State in the fall. He signed his scholarship letter the other day,” Gabriela said nonchalantly. Willa’s eyes grew large, as she tried to hit her friend for saying something that was obviously a secret.

“Miguel’s going to Penn State? I hadn’t heard that yet,” Karla replied. She was taken aback that he hadn’t said anything to her or the group yet.

“Oh ... uh, please don’t say anything, Karla. He hasn’t told anyone yet because Darius has been freaking out about school,” Gabriela pleaded, her brown eyes welled up with tears.

Surprised by the news, Karla didn’t want to get the girl in trouble. “Don’t worry, I won’t say anything.”

“Oh, thank you, thank you! You’re so kind,” said a worried Gabriela.

“Alright, well I’m going to get back to the game. If you need anything, just ask, ok?” Karla smiled again and walked back to her group lower down on the bleachers. Her head was still spinning with the news about Miguel. She was happy for him, of course, but wondered how it would affect Darius when he found out. As the first half came to a close, Darius already had 35 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 blocks. The crowd was going wild, while up in the stands, the scouts scribbled notes wildly.

When the final buzzer sounded, Darius scored 72 points, 19 rebounds, 10 blocks, 5 assists, and 1 steal. Madison had won easily against their toughest opponent so far. Their next game was against the reigning champions, Polk High, who usually tore them apart. But that night was one of celebration, as Darius waved to the bleachers where his friends from the Science Club sat, then made his way to the locker room.

“Why can’t I equip it?” Quinn asked.

“Because it’s broken. I told you! You’ll go flying off the map and fail the quest,” replied Andrea as she tapped away on her keyboard.

“Then why’d they add it if it’s broken?”

“Because the devs are too lazy to test their code properly.”

Quinn groaned, taking a drink from his water bottle.”I really wanted a whirlwind. It sounded so cool.”

“Maybe they’ll fix it in a patch or two. The game still has Greg’s wife showing up in random places, and she’s been patched out for years.”

“That’s really weird, but he seems broken half the time anyway.”

Having played Skycraft for years, Andrea had gotten pretty used to the jank of the game. It’s what gave it some charm, but also endless hours of frustration as the developers tinkered and messed around with how the game functions. Even the sequel was pretty much just the original game with slightly better textures.

The two new friends had decided to get together at Quinn’s house on the weekend to play the MMORPG, since it made it easier for Andrea to see what he was doing. She had to admit he was improving, but he wasn’t ready for the mountain region of Vikendi, let alone Schmargonrög. But it was nice to play with someone she knew in real life and not some forty-year-old man preying on underage girls. Andrea chided herself internally about how stupid she’d been when she was younger.

“Can I ask you something?” said Quinn. His eyes looked over the top of his monitor as he lay on the floor beside his bed.

A little worried, Andrea did the opposite and slid to hide herself behind her screen as he back pressed against the wall. “Sure, I guess.”

“Well ... it’s just that ... I kind of...”

BZZZZ! BZZZZ! ... BZZZZ! BZZZZ!

Quinn was mercifully interrupted by Andrea’s phone ringing, which she answered immediately without even checking who it was.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Andrea? It’s Karla. What are you up to?”

Andrea breathed a sigh of relief, “Just at Quinn’s, what’s up?” It was strange for Karla to call Andrea. Usually she’d just get a text or a message in their Dis-CREET chat app.

“Oh ... Are you two...” there was a note of surprise in Karla’s voice as well as a hint of a naughty attitude.

“No, we’re just gaming. His parents are gone though, why?” Andrea asked suspiciously.

“Oh, good! I’ll be right over then. He’s only a few minutes’ drive from me. See you in a few...” The phone went dead on the other end. Andrea just stared at her phone as ‘call ended’ flashed on the screen.

“What was that about?” Quinn asked quizzically.

“I-I don’t really know. She’s coming over, though. Why, I don’t have the faintest idea.”

It didn’t take long for a car to pull up and park in the driveway. Karla hopped out, a spring in her step as she practically raced inside. After she got through the front door and took off her boots and jacket, Karla realized she’d never actually been in Quinn’s place before. It was nice; a simple two-story house with a beige siding exterior.

“Hello?”

“Upstairs, second door on the left!” Quinn yelled from his room. The busty Karla bounced up the stairs, clearing two steps at a time.

“I found one!” Karla announced as she entered the room, looking around at the unexpected orderly state of the room. Shelves of books lined up one wall, a pair of crossed swords sat above a large wooden desk. The two teens inside sat on the floor at either end of the room. Quinn looked annoyed, and Andrea looked confused.

“Found who?” Quinn asked with a frustrated tone.

“Wendy Shepard,” Andrea said, beaming with glee. Neither of the other two had any idea what she was talking about.

“Again ... who’s Wendy Shepard?” Quinn’s frustration built a little more.

“One of the girls ... from the photos?” Karla looked over at Andrea, who understood.

“Sorry, Quinn, you missed some stuff before the game,” Andrea explained, sitting up off the floor. “We found nude pictures of some girls and the teacher stuffed inside the couch.”

“OOH! Well SHIT!” exclaimed Quinn, surprised at that revelation. He wished he’d arrived earlier that night. “So, what are you going to do?”

“I was hoping Andrea could sneak us a phone number so we could call her,” Karla said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

Quinn thought differently. “And say what? Hey, we found some nudes of yours buried in a couch?”

Karla stopped. It was a good question. What would she say to this person she’d never met before? “I got it. I’ll say I’m with the Alumni Association asking about what she’s been up to and then sneak in a question about her activities during school.”
