The air was electric that Friday morning as students piled into the school before class. The talk in the hallway had finally shifted away from gossip and towards that night’s big basketball game. It was one of the few times most grudges were forgotten, at least for a little while, as most students and staff were too excited to quarrel with each other.

As Brittany walked down the hall alone, she looked over and saw Chuck chatting to his friends, but he made no movement towards her. She couldn’t be sure, but she suspected that might not have been the case if Warren had been walking with her. She wore her school spirit T-shirt; a short sleeve shirt that happened to show off her nice, perky chest. She wondered how many guys wished they were in Warren’s shoes now, knowing she was with him. With the exception of the football team, Warren’s popularity had risen exponentially, although that wasn’t hard since he’d mostly been a loner before the snowstorm incident.

“Looking good! Ready for tonight’s game?” Karla asked, appearing from behind a group of cheerleaders.

“Oh yeah, I think Darius is going to destroy them,” Brittany said, smiling. It had been a while since she’d been able to do that openly without the rabble breaking into gossip.

“You look pretty happy,” Karla said, noticing genuine happiness on her friend’s face. She usually only saw that after Brittany had finished exams or a large assignment that she knew she’d aced.

“I’m feeling happy, and things are going well, you know? With everything that happened before with Chuck and all that, I’m finally feeling good again.”

Karla leaned closely and spoke softly, “You and Warren did it again, didn’t you?”

Brittany didn’t even flinch, “He had me screaming till my throat was hoarse,” then she winked at her friend.

Karla laughed, happy but confused with her friend. She’d grown to not dislike Warren so much, having spent more time with him, but he still wasn’t attractive in any way to her. She couldn’t imagine what her friend saw in him, beyond their shared interests in school and studying. That being said, she did remember her threesome with him and Andrea being quite good, but they were all doped up on Heat, so it was always good. Karla decided it was time to see what her friend was really doing and pulled her into an empty classroom.

“I’ve gotta ask. Why Warren? You could have Darius or Miguel, hell, even Quinn! Of all people, why Warren?”

Brittany couldn’t help rolling her eyes a little, having felt like she’d explained this enough since she and Warren came out. “During the snowstorm, we just had a heart to heart and realized we were always competing against each other. We’d been striving to push the other one harder and harder to make ourselves better. It made us both stronger but left us alone. No one else really understands school or the need for working hard like he does. That’s why we get along so well. We mess around, sure, but we also know when it’s time to study and work. Chuck never got that, and neither do the others. Plus, I just think he’s cute in his own way.”

“I don’t think I’ll ever get you,” Karla said, shaking her head in disbelief. “But I love you anyway.”

“Thanks. I love you, too. And you don’t have to get it. Just be happy for me and support my choices.”

Karla smiled, “I do. I just judge you for them.”

Brittany hugged her friend and whispered in her ear, “Judge me all you want. I still want to have a threesome with you and Warren once you’re able.”

“You slut.”

Brittany jokingly shot back, “I thought that was your domain?”

“Fuck you.”

Brittany smiled as she exited the empty classroom, “I hope to.” Both girls giggled as they rejoined the sea of students moving about the halls, slowly heading in the direction of their first class.

“Oh Karla, hey!” a voice called from the crowd. A small shape fought against the current towards the pair as they moved over to the side. Andrea appeared, with her laptop safely and firmly tucked under her arm like a running back protecting the football.

“Hello, Andrea, how’s it going?” Karla said cheerfully.

“Not bad. I’ve been doing more digging and...” she paused and looked at Brittany, “Brittany,” she said flatly, before continuing on. “I haven’t found anything on Suzanne Winchester.”

“Who?” Brittany asked, having been disconnected from the investigation.

Andrea groaned and rolled her eyes, annoyed. “The drama teacher, Barbie, pay attention. Karla and I have been looking around, while you’re all googly-eyed over Warren.”

“Now girls, play nice. Ok, so there’s not much out there. We’ll need to turn over some more rocks,” Karla said, trying to keep the peace.

“That’s just it,” Andrea said more firmly. “I don’t mean there’s not much. There’s nothing past early 2016 when she just disappears from existence.”

“You can’t just disappear, not in today’s world,” Brittany said with unearned confidence, which amused Andrea.

“You can if you know how to do it. I’m sure I could make you disappear if I really wanted to, princess,” sneered Andrea.

“I actually don’t doubt that” Karla jumped in again. “Me, personally, I’ve worked too hard on my social media presence to want that. That reminds me, I’ve got to find Miguel’s little sister at some point. Ugh! Life’s so tough.”

“And you want to make me disappear?” Brittany said sarcastically while pointing to Karla.

“Shut it, nerd lover!” Karla snapped back at her friend, as only a best friend could. “Alright, why don’t we hook up after school and dig online. Maybe police or tax records, while I comb social media.”

“Sounds good. Hopefully there’s less distracting action in the room this time...” said Andrea with a knowing grin.

Confused, Brittany asked, “Did I miss something?”

“Always!” Karla shot back. “Alright, see you after school then, Andrea. And Britt, I’ll talk to you later.”

They all split up as the warning bell sounded and none of them were even close to the classrooms where they needed to be. Every new bit of information seemed to lead to more questions than answers.

Each hour, as the game got closer, Darius seemed to stress more. It wasn’t the basketball that worried him. He thrived under pressure on the court, but everything else surrounding it weighed heavily on him. He still hadn’t heard anything from the schools he’d applied to for academic scholarships, and he knew the deadline was likely looming in the next few weeks. If he didn’t hear something soon, he’d have to take an athletic scholarship, which meant he needed to do well tonight and stay healthy until he finished his degree.

By the final class of the day, not even Miguel could calm him down. As soon as the bell sounded, Darius beelined it for the safety of the drama room, Miguel followed suit to keep an eye on his friend. He was worried, too, knowing Darius needed some kind of scholarship to be able to afford college at all. He didn’t want to see his friend fall victim to his own fears and self-doubts.

Darius’ mind swirled with thoughts of his brother, Jamal; the times they played one-on-one in the dirt driveway, clouds of dust kicked up as they moved, and Jamal letting him score a lay-up pretending he dropped his guard. He’d spent hours outside on those hot summer days teaching him how to cross-dribble, box out for rebounds, and square up his shots. Jamal loved basketball almost as much as he loved football ... almost.

“Come on, man. Your brother wouldn’t want to see you like this, Darius. He’d want you on that court, kickin’ ass. You’ve got to snap out of it!” Miguel pleaded, but it was no use. Darius had fallen into a near panic attack. He clutched his massive hands over his head, just shivering as a cold sweat poured off of him.

Miguel knew Maggie might be able to help like she had the previous big game, but she’d gone home for dinner. He was supposed to pick her up in a little while to take her to the game. He tried reaching out to Karla, but there wasn’t a response. Finally, he sent a message to the group chat.

M - Anyone still at school? Darius is in the Drama Room having a panic attack. Need help!

There was a long silence, as Miguel waited for some kind of response. He tried to give Darius some food to eat so he’d have strength for the game, as well as something to drink, but he wouldn’t take it. Darius just kept mumbling about, not wanting to let him down. He knew what his friend meant, and it pained him to know Darius had never fully recovered from the loss of his older brother. That was something Miguel knew he couldn’t grasp, not having lost a sibling.

His phone suddenly buzzed in his hand, shaking him out of his thoughts. He opened the app to see:

L – I’m here and on my way

Hopefully Linda would know what to do. He breathed a sigh of relief, as he sat back down on the couch next to his friend. He put his hand on Darius’ wide shoulders, the 7-ft tall intimidating man looked much smaller than usual, Miguel thought to himself, as the door opened and Linda knelt in front of both of them.

“How’s he doing? What’s going on?” she asked calmly but directly, to avoid making things worse.

“I think he’s freaking out about his scholarships and what happened to his brother,” Miguel stated, unable to be as calm as Linda was.

“Has he done this before? He usually seems so calm and relaxed.” Linda rubbed his massive hands with hers. His were more than twice the size, but she knew it could help.

“I think it’s just the stress of everything going on. He hasn’t heard back from the schools he applied to, and he hoped he’d win the Science Fair, but that didn’t happen,” Miguel continued. “He had a small crash in the last game when he had a bad first half. Maggie talked him down though and he recovered well.”

“Do you know what she did or said?” Linda asked curiously. “It could help again. He just needs to focus on something else besides what’s stressing him out.”

Miguel hesitated briefly but reckoned Mrs. Linda would understand. “She promised him sex. It was the night we found this room. If he did well, she’d do whatever he wanted.”

“And he obviously did well,” Linda recalled. “Ok, where’s Maggie now?”

“At home. I’m supposed to pick her up for the game after she eats.”

“Ok,” she said, her voice still calm. “Why don’t you go and see that she gets picked up as soon as she’s ready.”

“And what about you and Darius?” Miguel asked the young teacher.

“Well, I’ll see what I can do on my end before she gets here. I’ve dealt with this myself, I think I know what I can do to help. Leave him to me.”

Miguel saw the look in her eyes and believed her. Despite everything they’d done up to that point, Linda was still a bit of a mystery to him. They’d been to her house, which seemed much bigger than a single teacher should have been able to afford on her own. She also didn’t act like any other teacher he’d ever had, even before the gas incident. But she said she knew what to do and appeared quite confident in how to help his friend. He picked up his jacket and keys and left the room.

When they were alone, Linda asked, “Darius, do you have your canisters on you?” He nodded and pointed towards his backpack. She smiled. “I guess we’ll both get what we wanted then.” She thought she detected a hint of a smile cross his lips.

“Do you want to do this, Darius?” Linda asked, ensuring she had consent as she was handing him one of the small metallic canisters which looked microscopic in his hands.

He finally looked up at the young teacher, wiping the cold sweat and tears from his eyes. “Yes, I think it’ll help. Thank you for this.”
