I’ve lost track of the date, but I think my twentieth birthday is sometime this week. A lot has happened in the last four weeks. Ah-Lin, Anhe and Nuying have all confirmed that they are pregnant with Chiang Jun Hie’s child. I think they will be the last of the pregnancies for now as all the adult women have been taking herbs to prevent pregnancy for several weeks.
Qíngfù Min relies on my assistance more and more, and at times I feel as though I’m running the Lotus Garden. New female slaves arrive at weekly intervals. The younger ones are acquired from orphanages or from impoverished families. About a third of the newcomers are adults aged in their late teens or early twenties. A few of the adults come from slave markets, but most are destitute and have sold themselves to the Lotus Garden for whatever they need to pay their debts. Several of the adults are well advanced in their training as concubines, and Chiang Jun Hie is more than happy for his cock to provide them with practical experience.
Just as the Lotus Garden is achieving a feeling of normality, Huifen’s illicit spy network reports that Mìngfù Jing has succeeded in her legal claim for ownership of the House of the Silver Lotus, and the Lotus Garden with it. I’ve no idea where Huifen obtains her information, and I know better than to ask. However, her information is usually accurate. There’s no official announcement from Chiang Jun Hie. I only get to find out about the upcoming change through Qíngfù Min letting slip that she and her husband will be leaving for an extended trip next week.
I’m unable to prevent Qíngfù Min from emptying the safe of cash just before she departs with her husband. However I have made a note of how much was in the safe at the time. I also ensured that all bills and slaves’ stipends have been paid up to date. The money from two recent slave placements has been ‘misplaced’ in the desk drawer. I don’t know if Mìngfù Jing can recover the money taken, but I have done what I can to preserve some cash for the Lotus Garden’s operation.
Mìngfù Jing arrives three days later like an avenging angel, only to find Chiang Jun Hie and Lu Min gone, and more than the Lotus Garden’s cash missing. She’s more than a little surprised to find me running the Lotus Garden. I give her my report and confess to what I have done. She thanks me for my efforts and asks me to continue as manager of the Lotus Garden for the time being.
I am standing staring at the near empty safe trying to work out how we will manage with so little cash. Tradesmen may be reluctant to give us credit so soon after clearing the last lot of overdue accounts. We’ve three adolescents ready for placement, but no outstanding requests. Two concubines ... five if you count Ah-Lin, Anhe and Nuying ... are marketable, but I will need Mìngfù Jing’s participation in any sale.
“Put a hold on any further acquisitions for the time being, Meizhen,” says Mìngfù Jing. “There’s no point in creating more mouths to feed until our cash situation is resolved. I’ll make inquiries about selling one or more concubines in the morning.”
“What about the pregnant concubines?” I ask. “They will be worth much more if they have given birth to a boy.”
“ ... and less if their child is a girl,” says Mìngfù Jing. “Plus we will need to feed them for eight months, and pay their stipend. I don’t think we’ve the luxury of holding on to all three. I’ll look to sell one. That may be enough to tide us through until our cash situation improves. How many adolescents have we available for placement?”
“Two are ready now and another four will finish their training in a few weeks. However, one of those may be worth training to be a concubine. She’ll turn eighteen by the time her concubine training is finished.”
“Good. Do your best to place those adolescents who are ready. Are you confident you can negotiate a good price for them?”
“Yes, Mìngfù Jing. I have been helping Qíngfù Min with the whole process. I think I understand how to avoid the usual tricks. May I ask whether you intend to sell me or my sister?”
“You; definitely not ... at least for the foreseeable future. However, your sister doesn’t have a long term future in the Lotus Garden. At some point she will need to enter into a concubinage agreement. If her child is a boy, then there will be several wealthy men eager for an instant family and son to inherit. Giving birth to a girl will make any placement more problematic, but not an impossible task. In her case, I’m willing to wait to find out the child’s gender before taking any further steps.”
“What of Qíngfù Niáng?” I ask. “When will she return to the Lotus Garden?”
