“Hmmm. What AhLin says about it being possible to get to Wu XinYue’s house may be true, but what if you are caught on the return journey with XinYue in your company,” muses Daoshi Shi. “The troublemakers would likely kill you and take Wu XinYue as a hostage until their demands are met.”
“There is always a risk,” says Huifen. “We don’t know if Wu XinYue and Furen Susu are safe. If they are hiding, then the longer we wait, the greater the risk that they may be discovered.”
“Qíngfù Niáng will need to approve such a rash venture,” says Daoshi Shi. “She may not be willing to risk her sister’s life to such an attempt.”
“Then will you ask Qíngfù Niáng for permission?” asks AhLin.
Half an hour later, AhLin, Huifen, Daoshi Shi and I are standing in Qíngfù Niáng’s room.
“You may make the attempt providing you abandon the mission should it prove difficult to reach Wu XinYue’s house,” says Qíngfù Niáng to Huifen. “You are not to risk your life unnecessarily. If you find XinYue, you are only to leave there if you believe it is safe enough to return here. Show this token to the guards at the gate and they will let you pass.”
Huifen takes the token and she promptly leaves on her mission.
“I didn’t believe Qíngfù Niáng would agree to my proposal,” whispers AhLin when we are briefly alone.
“If Huifen returns with Wu XinYue, then you will have earned both her and Qíngfù Niáng’s favour,” I reply. “If anything happens to Wu XinYue as a consequence of this rescue attempt, then we can only hope Qíngfù Niáng is merciful.”
“I have faith in Huifen’s ability to succeed,” says AhLin.
“I hope you are right,” I sigh.
While I can’t claim to know Huifen very well, I doubt she will abandon her mission without at least making an effort to reach Wu XinYue and Susu. Only AhLin knows what promised reward has tempted Huifen to undertake this dangerous quest. I hope for AhLin’s sake that it’s a good reward, because Huifen is capable of simply running away rather than returning to the Lotus Garden. Most girls her age would never accept such a quest. Even in normal times, a girl travelling alone in the city would face many hazards. A runaway slave has little chance of successfully fleeing into the countryside. However, Huifen is no ordinary girl and escaping the city is well within the range of her talents.
Since we don’t expect Huifen to return much before dawn, AhLin and I are sent back to the harem. I doubt either of us will be able to sleep, but we at least lie down to rest. Despite everything I eventually fall asleep after a few hours of tossing and turning. I wake to the sound of voices from across room. It is still dark and I’ve no idea of the time.
“Ah, good,” says AhLin. “You’re already awake. Get dressed. There’s work to be done.”
I dress quickly and join Qíngfù Niáng and AhLin. We move into the corridor so as not to wake the rest of the harem.
“What is your opinion of young Huifen’s abilities, Meizhen?” asks Qíngfù Niáng.
It takes me a few moments to overcome my shock at being asked such a question by Qíngfù Niáng. Even AhLin rarely asks for my opinion about anything important these days.
“Huifen is very resourceful and she’s capable of looking after herself,” I reply once I find the nerve to answer calmly.
“Not against a mob of armed men,” says Qíngfù Niáng. “Some parts of the city are dangerous at the moment. Particularly at night. I fear we have sent Huifen to her death, AhLin.”
“Huifen understands the risks,” replies AhLin. “She won’t unnecessarily jeopardise Wu XinYue’s and Susu’s safety. She will succeed ... I’m sure of it.”
“I hope you are right, AhLin,” says Qíngfù Niáng. “Mìngfù Jing will never forgive me if XinYue comes to harm because of what I’ve done.”
Fortunately we don’t have to wait for much longer. Huifen has returned and four women wrapped in shawls are with her. I can’t see who they are in the dim light of the corridor, but I notice one of them is injured. AhLin fetches a couple of lanterns. It is only then that I can see that Huifen has succeeded in bringing Wu XinYue and Susu, along with two of their maids, back to the Lotus Garden. Qíngfù Niáng’s joy is cut short when she realises that XinYue is the injured person.
“Meizhen! Fetch the doctor!” says Qíngfù Niáng.
“There’s no need,” replies Huifen. “The guards at the gate sent word to Huàn Hong with instructions to send a doctor here.”
Sure enough, Huàn Hong and the elderly woman who serves as the Lotus Garden doctor soon arrive. Qíngfù Niáng orders that they move to Wu XinYue’s suite. AhLin, Huifen and I are instructed to remain here and return to our beds. However Qíngfù Niáng promises that she will talk with us later in the morning.
“Well done, Huifen,” AhLin and I say in unison.
AhLin hands a small bag to Huifen, which I presume contains Huifen’s reward.
“How did XinYue become injured?” asks AhLin.
“There are groups of men looting empty houses. Wu XinYue was injured when a stone was thrown through the window of her house as we were preparing to leave. I don’t think the looters realised we were there. We didn’t wait to find out about their intentions. We left through a back door and hid in the bushes until the men moved on.”
