Chapter 16: Changes

Historical Sex Story: Chapter 16: Changes - Two English sisters are captured by Chinese pirates while on board a ship taking them home to England. They are transported in chains to the Lotus Garden where they are trained to be concubines. The owner of the Lotus Garden takes pleasure in testing the sexual skills of the Lotus Garden slaves, awarding a personal seal of approval in the form of a small tattoo. The story is set in 16th century China.

All of us in the Lotus Garden want to know what is going on, but we are clearly not going to be told. Not that anything in the harem remains a secret for long. The huàns and daoshis all return to their work, and only Daoshi Shi stays to make us to settle down for the night. AhLin decides to find out what has happened and she asks Daoshi Shi directly. Daoshi Shi could refuse to answer, but I again witness the result of AhLin’s efforts to win Daoshi Shi’s loyalty.

“One of the huàns found Genji locked in the bedding storeroom in the basement,” says Daoshi Shi. “It seems someone locked the door while Genji was inside the storeroom. She didn’t see who it was, and nobody heard her cries for help. Weren’t you down there with Huifen today, Luli?”

“Not today,” replies Luli. “Huifen and I were assigned to change the bedding this afternoon, but we didn’t need to go down to the storeroom. There was enough clean bedding in the cupboards on this floor.”

“That’s unusual,” says Daoshi Shi. “Normally the cupboards on this floor have only a few spare sets of bedding. Genji must have entered the storeroom while someone was restocking the cupboards this morning. Well, it’s her own fault. She had no business being in the bedding storeroom in the first place.”

“I agree,” says AhLin. “She spends far too much time meddling in things that have nothing to do with her duties. I’m surprised Qíngfù Niáng hasn’t taken action before now.”

“Well Qíngfù Niáng might take action after today’s incident,” replies Daoshi Shi. “She isn’t happy at the disturbance caused by Genji’s disappearance. I think she may have words with Pangfua about her relationship with Genji.”

If Daoshi Shi is right, then Pangfua will have suffered another blow in her campaign to rid the Lotus Garden of her rivals. Unfortunately, I doubt she will give up her campaign entirely unless Qíngfù Niáng or Mìngfù Jing make her stop. With Mìngfù Jing away at the war and Qíngfù Niáng busy with downsizing the harem, it seems we must endure Pangfua’s games for a while longer.

AhLin returns to her room upstairs and the harem settles down for the night. I look at Huifen as she lies down to sleep. I can’t help feeling she had something to do with Genji’s disappearance today, but there are no witnesses, and Huifen isn’t confessing to anything. Genji’s misfortune could have been an accident, but Huifen had the motive and ability to lure Genji into a trap. I just hope for Huifen’s sake that Qíngfù Niáng is too busy with more important matters to bother with a full investigation.

The next few days are uneventful. Now that Genji has curtailed her activities on behalf of Pangfua, the tension that existed between the factions quickly eases. Neither Qíngfù Niáng nor Pangfua enter our part of the harem for several days. As a consequence, the mood of the women in the harem improves, and the insults and snide remarks that fuelled the tension quickly stop. The whole harem is more relaxed, which encourages AhLin to spend more time socialising.

The string of uneventful days ends when Daoshi Shi announces that Su Ling, the woman trader from the market, will be visiting the harem this afternoon. It is almost two weeks since she last visited us, and several of the odalisques are eager to spend some of their stipend. Perhaps she’ll be able to tell us what is happening in the rest of the city. We haven’t received any fresh news about events occurring beyond the walls of the Lotus Garden since the day of the harem celebration. Even those who can usually prise gossip and information from the huàns, have nothing new to report. It’s as though we are deliberately being kept in the dark.

Su Ling arrives with her baskets of wares. She has her usual range of clothing and jewellery, together with more mundane things like combs and brushes. She is swamped by a gaggle of eager women as soon as she arrives. Many of the women try to plug Su Ling for news of the outside world. Su Ling is shrewd enough to only answer questions from those who purchase something from her. Unfortunately for some of the younger girls, the prices demanded by Su Ling are more than they can afford. No amount of haggling can make Su Ling lower her prices.

“The war has created shortages of many goods,” says Su Ling. “I must pay more for the goods that I buy from the merchants.”

We are fortunate that Qíngfù Niáng supplies our basic clothing. It means wearing the yellow tunics for the adolescent girls, and the grey and white harem uniforms for the rest of us. Not that most of us mind at the moment. More and more of us are choosing to wear the uniforms, and save our silk dresses for when Mìngfù Jing returns. The prices Su Ling is demanding for new dresses will mean that even Nuying will probably choose to wear her uniform. Of course some of us can’t afford a silk dress, so those like me must be content with the Lotus Garden uniform in any case.

After Su Ling has departed, we gather together to share what news we have gleaned. It isn’t much and some of it is contradictory. The food riots have been quelled and order has been restored for the time being. However, the city is still tense and trouble could break out at any time. The dispute between the provincial governor and the rebellious militia officers is still at an impasse.
