Chapter 11: Allies
Historical Sex Story: Chapter 11: Allies - Two English sisters are captured by Chinese pirates while on board a ship taking them home to England. They are transported in chains to the Lotus Garden where they are trained to be concubines. “Shuchang ordered us to return here,” I say in answer to Zihan’s and Huiquin’s questions about Ah-Lin’s early return from Mìngfù Jing’s bedchamber.
It’s the truth, and I’ve no intention of elaborating further. I’m sure Genji, or Pangfua herself, will soon let it be known how they sabotaged Ah-Lin’s special night. Of course, they won’t be so blatant as to admit their underhand plot, nor allude to Shuchang’s collusion, since that might incur Qíngfù Niáng’s wrath. I’m beginning to comprehend the scale of the dirty tricks and politics played behind the genteel veils of the Lotus Garden.
“I’m sure Mìngfù Jing will call for you another night, Ah-Lin,” I say when we are alone in the baths the next morning.
“I need more allies,” says Ah-Lin in response.
“Allies?” I reply. “What do you mean?”
“Pangfua and Nuying won’t rest after last night. They resent me for being a foreigner, and because I speak Mandarin with a strange accent. Nor do I believe Qíngfù Niáng really approves of me. She wants Jing to fuck more concubines, but only the right sort of concubine.”
I can’t deny the logic of Ah-Lin’s assessment. I’m not sure how the family relationship affects Pangfua’s status in the Lotus Garden. Pangfua may be Mìngfù Jing’s and Qíngfù Niáng’s cousin, but Pangfua isn’t simply allowed to do as she likes. If Pangfua acted on her own last night, then her stunt risked incurring Qíngfù Niáng’s anger. Perhaps Qíngfù Niáng had approved Pangfua’s move. Mìngfù Jing is about to depart for war, and Qíngfù Niáng may not want her sister to spend her few remaining nights here in the company of someone Qíngfù Niáng regards as an unsuitable trainee concubine.
“Who do you propose to approach as an ally?” I ask.
“I need to have Huàn Hong and Daoshi Shi on my side,” says Ah-Lin. “And someone close to Qíngfù Niáng.”
“How do you propose the win them over to your cause,” I ask. “You have no money for bribes unless you sell your jewellery. Mìngfù Jing might not like it if you sell her gifts.”
“I agree. I would never do that in any case. In exchange for their help now, I shall promise Huàn Hong and Daoshi Shi great rewards once I am Mìngfù Jing’s First Chosen.”
I’m flabbergasted at Ah-Lin’s ambitious goal. I never knew Ah-Lin aspired to rise so high in the Lotus Garden hierarchy. She is not simply aiming to become a favourite like Pangfua, but to claim the rarely achieved title of First Chosen. It’s a Lotus Garden position only second in power to that of Qíngfù Niáng. Trainee concubines like Ah-Lin are encouraged to set their sights on the lower status of favourite, or even settle for being simply a furen. Achieving either status ensures her desirability as a wealthy man’s or woman’s concubine. While furens are usually sold into concubinage agreements, favourites are rarely sold, and a First Chosen would be treated as family.
“You will need Qíngfù Niáng on your side as well,” I say.
“In time. Yes,” replies Ah-Lin. “For now I shall content myself with someone close to her.”
“Who?” I ask. “Wu Xin-Yue is loyal to her sister. You’ll not get her to side with you against Qíngfù Niáng.”
“I know,” replies Ah-Lin. “But Xin-Yue is at least fair minded. She’ll not go against Qíngfù Niáng, but she might be swayed to argue in my favour when Qíngfù Niáng asks for her opinion.”
“And how do you propose to sway Xin-Yue to your cause?” I ask.
“I don’t know at the moment. For now I will be friendly and helpful to her. To Susu as well. Something may happen to enable me to win their favour.”
We are late for our lessons, but Daoshi Shi doesn’t reprimand us. Ah-Lin and I settle down into the routine morning lessons. However, our day doesn’t stay routine for long. When we break for our snack at midday we discover Genji has spread word around the harem about Pangfua’s coup last night. For the first time Ah-Lin and I can gauge which of the odalisques are supporters of Pangfua, and those who are sympathetic to Ah-Lin’s plight. To our surprise, Nuying is in the latter group and she doesn’t participate in the teasing and insults some of odalisques heap on Ah-Lin.
The teasing stops abruptly when Wu Xin-Yue enters our part of the harem from the family wing. She too must have heard of Pangfua’s activities, and clearly Wu Xin-Yue doesn’t approve.
“If you girls have nothing better to do then there are dresses that need mending,” snaps Wu Xin-Yue to the gathered women.
Those from the north wing disperse quickly and busy themselves with work. Nuying and the other favourites promptly go upstairs to the mezzanine. I’ve no idea what they do up there. However, Wu Xin-Yue’s comment gives me an idea.
“Once the war begins I suspect there will be a shortage of new dresses and material,” I say to Ah-Lin. “Perhaps if we offer to mend Susu’s or Xin-Yue’s dresses you might be able to gain their favour.”
Ah-Lin nods in agreement, but her attention is directed towards Huàn Hong who is approaching us in an unseemly rush.
“Mìngfù Jing has ordered that you prepare yourself for tonight, Ah-Lin,” says Huàn Hong. “You are to walk the silver path.”
