From Ceres the Imperial Yacht Empress Olivia left for Grendel, with five pregnant females onboard. They made a quick courtesy visit to Mynos where Jason verified that the new Duke of Mynos and Duchess Lilly were still in power and still loving each other. Jason found a very pregnant Duchess Lilly, eager to have her mother come for a visit. She told Jason that the last she heard Lavender was not pregnant yet.
Jason and Allan Bitra had a hard time suppressing their laughter as they watched as the two sisters tried to hug each other. None of the three very pregnant girls found it amusing.
“It must have happened that night here, when we first seduced out husband,” Andrea said as she slapped Jason’s arm for trying to hide a smirk at their awkwardness. They were all three petite girls while Jason was tall so the suspicion was that they would give birth to big babies.
Jade was glad to see her brothers but showed no indication of wanting to stay behind so after a two-day visit the Empress Olivia left again, headed for Grendel.
Lotus went into labor first, six hours after they entered the Grendel system. She was already in the small medical facility with both female doctors and the extra medical personnel attending to her, and with Jason walking a pathway in front of the medical building inside the first ring of the Olivia.
Fourteen hours later Lotus gave birth to Richard the Fifth. Right from the start he objected loudly to how he was being treated.
“He is beautiful,” Jason said as he blinked away the sudden tears of emotion at holding his first son.
“I forgive you for getting me pregnant,” Lotus said with a tired smile. “Maybe I will even let you touch me again. I didn’t really mean all those nasty things I called you earlier.”
“You are still in trouble,” Sam commented behind them. “Andrea has been calling you similar names.” Jason jerked his head up in surprise.
“You were so involved with Lady Lotus that you didn’t hear Lady Andrea next door.” The doc said as she patted Jason’s arm. “Lady Lotus gets to rest while you go next door and endure the same verbal abuse from your next concubine”
Twelve hours later Andrea gave birth to Lady Cortina. She was also perfect but a bit smaller than her half-brother, and less noisy. Jason suffered similarly and had no way of holding back the tears at holding his third child, a beautiful little girl.
Two weeks later the Imperial Yacht Empress Olivia docked with the Grendel space station, a couple of weeks less than a year since Jason left the same space station onboard the Imperial Cruiser Electra. Because of the newborn babies, and the other still very pregnant females onboard, they used the Olivia’s shuttle and took the entire household directly to the ducal castle.
Gwendolyn was due to give birth next, so she entered the Grendel Prime atmosphere in a hammock suspended inside the cargo hold of the shuttle. The two newborn babies had their own hammocks and slept during re-entry. The pilots made heavy use of the anti-gravity generator to help slow the shuttle. The result was that re-entry took three times as long but was a lot less bumpy.
Jason was mildly concerned about heading for the castle instead of the palace because the castle seemed half deserted with only a skeleton crew to maintain the place. The crew of the Empress Olivia, and the shuttle pilots, planned their arrival to take place around mid-morning so by the time Jason and his ADCs headed to the city and the ducal palace, to report to the duke, the castle was already bustling with activity and seemingly fully occupied.
“Jason!” The duke exclaimed when he walked into the duke’s private office. Jason was shocked at how old his grandfather looked, after being away for just a year.
“Your Grace,” Jason responded as he bowed.
“Drop the act, young man,” the duke said as he struggled to his feet and came around the end of the desk. “I have heard the news, Your Grace. Special Imperial Envoy, Member of the Imperial Council. Tell me about these wands you have,”
Jason spent the rest of the afternoon talking to his grandfather, mostly about his experiences over the past year. When Jason told him about taking his family to the castle, because of the number of young people who were quite noisy, the duke waved it off and told Jason that he was thinking of stepping down, especially now that Jason and his other granddaughters were back.
“When can I see them, the babies?” Duke Richard the Second asked. “I’m having difficulty moving around otherwise I would have gone out to the castle.”
“I think it best if we bring them here tomorrow morning,” Jason said. “During the afternoons it is a madhouse there as they get the babies ready for bed, with the bathing and feeding. All the still pregnant women tend get quite emotional as well.”
“Tell them to bring the babies,” Duke Richard said. “The council knows you have arrived, Raymond was here earlier, asking if you had presented yourself already, with that wife of his in tow. You had better to present yourself to them tomorrow morning as well.”
True to what Jason told his grandfather, when he stepped back into the ducal castle, he walked into a hive of activity. Even the female servants were excited about the many babies. There were only three of them, so far, but they demanded and got all the attention in the castle.
“Go talk to Val,” Lisa ordered him in passing. “She is nervous, so you had better be nice to her.”
“Lisa ordered me to be nice,” Jason said when he found Dame Valery Kemp waiting for him in the library. She looked at him with a nervous look and huge eyes. He walked up to her and gently hugged her. “What is wrong?” he asked softly. He had come to really like the plucky older lady, a full Imperial Judge assigned to him, supposedly to keep him in his place. She sneaked into his bed a few times but seldom stayed the entire night.
“You know that joke everybody makes, about something in the water...,” she said as she clung to his shirt.
“Causing all the pregnancies? Yes,” Jason said. “Why would that make you nervous?”
“Because I’m pregnant,” she whispered. “At my age, I’m forty, too old for this.”
“I’m glad,” Jason said as he held her tighter. “I saw the way you look at the babies; you would love to have one of your own.”
“You are not angry at me being pregnant?” Val said as she looked him in the eyes. “You have claimed every female whose virginity you took, or who got pregnant by you.”
“Then I claim you as well,” Jason said. She whimpered as she clung to him.
“Did he say it?” Countess Erin asked as she waddled into the library. “You had better be nice to her!”
“Yes, I am declaring Valery Kemp to be my concubine,” Jason said as he snagged his wife around the waist with one arm.
The next morning, after he ran around the castle with all the marines like he did so many years ago, he and all his concubines, and lovers, and friends, and other related ladies, set off for the palace. Sylvia, Lotus, and Andrea had their babies wrapped and ready for a day away, meaning they took enough baby supplies for a month.
“My mom is going to be there,” Andrea gushed nervously excited. “I sent them messages, but the time lag is just too great to proper news. Oops, I don’t think I told them about my husband’s status yet.”
“My mom is also going to be there,” Lotus said. “Her first question was if I was pregnant already. I told her no.” That caused some giggles among the females.
“I’m excited to tell my dad about Secundus, and my, I mean our businesses,” Maggie said as she hugged Jason.
“Is he expecting you?” Jason asked.
“No, we are going to surprise him.” She giggled.
Jason saw the ladies to the wing normally occupied by the viscount and after greeting his grandfather, set off on foot across the road, with all the body protectors surrounding him as he made his way to the council building.
By the time Jason arrived outside the council chambers, it was obvious that an emergency general meeting had been called. Every seat in the chamber was filled and every male had a medallion around his neck. It seemed like every baron on the planet was there. The master at arms was having a tough time keeping a smile off his face as he formally led Jason into the council chambers and to his seat.
Viscount Mount Grace, chairman of the Council of Barons, waved his hand to get everybody to sit. Then he addressed Jason directly. As far as Jason could remember, that has never happened on Grendel before. The chairman of the council would first request, or demand, that whoever wanted to address the council, to stand and approach the podium, after which that person could be directly addressed by the council members.
“I would like to welcome Jason Cosgrove back to Grendel,” Viscount Raymond started. “Yes, I know, I am not addressing the young man correctly. The reason for that is because of a serious dilemma we, the rulers of this system, faced about a year and a half ago. I am not going to relate everything here, except to say that the heir of Duke Richard, at that time, as well as Richard the Fourth were eliminated as heirs.
“The dilemma was when both the emperor and Duke Richard, declared Jason Cosgrove as their legal and natural heir at the same time. The final agreement was that Jason Cosgrove would assume both positions, with the understanding that he would produce several heirs as soon as possible. Because of the age of Duke Richard, Jason would be primary heir to our duke, with the understanding that the empire has a higher priority.
“I give you Jason Cosgrove, Viscount Moorefield of Grendel, Earl Taurus and heir to the emperor, Member of the Imperial Council, and thus also Duke of Saturn, and if my sources are correct, also the designated Earl Scorpius of the Glamor system. No, I do not understand that either, except that Jason Cosgrove does hold all those unrelated and primary titles.” Then the viscount pointed at the podium as he invited Jason to address the full house.
“I left Grendel with a number of young ladies, daughters of various barons, with the clear understanding that I was expected to have as many children as I can produce, to ensure that I have more than one heir, for when I need to fulfill my other obligations,” Jason said. “Well, now, a year later, I am back as I promised my grandfather. It is with great pleasure, Viscount Raymond, to inform you, and the council, that your youngest daughter, Lady Lotus, gave birth to my first son, Richard the Fifth, barely five days after we entered the Grendel system. There are more of my many concubines, ladies from Grendel, who are currently pregnant, so one can hope Little Richard will soon have a spare.” Viscount Raymond jumped to his feet, all excited, and then could not get a word out. “If you and your wife would like to meet your first grandson, his mother is introducing him to the duke at the moment.”
“Council meeting dismissed!!” Viscount Raymond shouted before he bolted for the exit.
Jason could not escape nearly as quickly. Every baron on the planet wanted to shake his hand. Every council member wanted to know about the cluster, and the emperor. It was after lunch before Jason managed to return to the ducal palace, where he found his grandfather on a couch, holding Richard the Fifth and Little Corina on his lap.
“Poor kid keeps getting passed from the duke to his grandmother,” Lisa muttered to Jason.
“All that will save him now is a dirty diaper,” Jason muttered back. That turned out to be only partially true. Rick produced a dirty diaper, but then also demanded to be fed and put to bed. His mother confiscated him and headed back to the castle.
“Jason, my boy,” the duke said before Jason could think of an excuse to return to the castle with his wives and babies, “you make my old heart glad, to arrive back and present me with your first-born son. Do not overexert yourself or your son. Take a day off and relax. Come see me the day after tomorrow, so we can talk government.”
Jason didn’t get to have much time for himself that day or the next day. After his run the next morning, and after showering with a bunch of gorgeous nude concubines, he found a Grendel Marine Corps major waiting for him outside the door of the suite of Viscount Moorefield in the ducal castle, where he insisted on staying even with the duke not using the ducal suite at all anymore.
