Chapter 7: Saturn System

Science Fiction Sex Story: Chapter 7: Saturn System - The final book in the Imperial Dilemma trilogy. There is another story, mentioned in this book. Dysfunctional Imperials is not a sequel, but also not quite a stand-alone story.

“This is horrible,” Wilda exclaimed as she frowned at her tablet.

“What are you reading?” Lorena asked as she lowered her own tablet. Jason was relaxing in the garden inside the first ring of the Imperial Yacht Empress Olivia, named after his mother. The frigate-sized private yacht was a few days away from the jump gate that would take them into the Saturn system.

“History” Wilda said. “Listen to this. ’When humans first arrived in the cluster, they were floating along in a giant hollowed-out asteroid. Details were not clear except that they had some kind of ‘suspended animation’ system, tanks filled with some synthetic organic liquid with the whole body dumped in the liquid and the temperature lowered to just above freezing point. It worked but not perfectly. It is estimated that close to twenty percent of humans could not be reanimated. It is unclear if they died during the transit to the cluster or if they died during the reanimation process.’ I read elsewhere that there were originally twenty thousand people on that ship. Twenty percent would be four thousand people who died while in this suspended animation tanks.”

“Unless they mean twenty thousand survived,” Jason said as he studied the last of thirteen formal certificates the emperor handed him to hand over to the sole viscount and twelve members of the Saturn council of barons. “Then it means the original number was twenty-five thousand, and five thousand died. I also think your sources are a bit off, there were a lot more people than twenty thousand.” Then he handed them to Lin who was sitting next to him.

Each certificate had the heraldic emblem of the empire on it, was addressed to a particular nobleman, signed by the emperor and the chairman of the imperial council, and was meant to be put on display. They all had the same message, roughly translated as; the person handing you this is the son of the emperor, your new duke, and will be the next emperor, listen to him and be kind to him, or else. The certificates had different, more flowery legal wording, but the meaning was the same.

Besides the certificates addressed to the council of barons on Saturn, the emperor also gave Jason a wooden box and warned him to keep it safe and locked up, to be used at his discretion and when it was warranted. The box contained new, unused and inactivate medallions, complete with new ribbon colors, should Jason ever be in the position to create a new noble title. There was only one ducal medallion but six medallions for viscounts and twelve for barons. Then there were six more, for future knights. The medallions for knights gave him an idea.

“That’s even worse,” Lorena replied. “Let’s change the subject.”

“Okay, why did they call this system the Saturn system and why is the Pleiades Prime system called after the entire cluster?” Jade asked. For a change she was not in her hover chair but sitting on the lawn leaning back against Jason.

“They called their home planet ‘earth’ which means ground,” Jason said. “There are references to the planet being called ‘Terra’ which is just earth in some ancient language.”

“I guess the Pleiades Prime system is our home system,” Lisa said. “Instead of calling it ‘home’, they called it after the cluster.” She was out of uniform, way out of uniform, which resulted in the other males onboard the Empress Olivia keeping away from Jason’s group of scantily dressed women. “I know there is a gas giant back in the old earth system that has rings similar to the gas giant in the Saturn system. I heard they called the system after that gas giant because of that.”

“A planet called Saturn?” Jade muttered.

“That system is called the Sol system, which means sun,” Jason said. “There are eight planets in the Sol system and each has a name, similar to here except they used the names of fake deities to name the planets, except for their home planet which didn’t really have a name.”

“Similar to how we call each occupied system after some historic astronomy explorer,” Lisa added.

“Well, most of them,” Jason said. “Both Saturn and Ceres are called after planetary objects orbiting Sol and got their names from some imaginary earth gods. Cassini, Herschel, Cornell, and Kepler are all named after astronomers from Sol’s ancient history. Others like Bova and Glamor got their names from regular people, at least I think they were regular people. The imperial houses are named after stellar constellations visible from Sol. About half of those constellations are still recognizable from here.”

“I only know about House Taurus and the houses on Glamor,” Jade said. “What other imperial houses are there?”

“Each of the houses on Glamor and on Arcadia are named after a constellation,” Wilda said. “Other than Taurus, I don’t know about any imperial houses not in those restricted systems.”

“House Gemini runs the cluster-wide banking system, and House Dorado is responsible for the space elevator technology,” Jason said. “House Andromeda is also located on Secundus,”

“Gemini!” Wilda repeated. “Duh, how could I forget about them, they are everywhere. What does Andromeda do?”

“Space exploration,” Jason said. “They send out the ships with jump gates and they also colonize new habitable planets.”

Commander Wilson made a point of inviting Jason to the bridge when it was time to transit the Saturn jump gate. Jason had the idea that Commander Wilson would want Jason to drag Wanda along, since he was planning on marrying her. Jason felt sneaky so he invited Wanda but didn’t wait for her and snagged Ana, Lin’s mother and a Saturn native, to go with him to the bridge. Lin obviously tagged along like she always did. The disappointed look on Gill’s face when Jason and his two women but no Wanda, floated onto the bridge nearly caused Jason to give the game away but then Wanda floated in and Gill’s face made a drastic transformation. Then both Gill and Wanda blushed when they found Jason smirking at them.

As usual, transitioning into any system was totally unspectacular. While jump gates formed a series of connecting points to other systems, there were redundant links. From the Saturn jump gate, one could get to Ceres, and then via an empty system to Cornell or Grendel, or another empty system. The second empty system had jump gates to Bova or Buford. From Cornell one could jump via a third empty system back to Pleiades Prime or to Arcadia or Cassini.

“The Ceres system is twice as far from Pleiades Prime as the Saturn system but it’s quicker to get to Ceres Prime than to Saturn Prime,” Gill responded to a question Jason asked about travel times. “This jump gate, and the Ceres jump gate are within hours of each other while the Saturn moon is about three weeks away, as compared to two weeks to Ceres Prime from that jump gate.”

“Well, unless somebody changes my mind for me, I do not plan to visit Ceres,” Jason said. “When we leave here, the next stop will be Grendel.”

“Via the Ceres jump gate and a few more,” Gill added with a smirk.

The gas giant was relatively huge and was orbiting the medium-sized yellow star sort of in the middle of the Goldilocks zone. From up close, the gas giant was rather spectacular looking, with the surface covered in eternal clouds in weird formations, and the even more spectacular ring system around the gas giant.

There was one other planet in the system which was totally frozen so the original explorers would have ignored that system but then they discovered a sizable moon orbiting the gas giant, a moon three quarters the size of Secundus and with 0.8G gravity, and a partially breathable atmosphere and a simple plant life consisting of fungus and algae, but no animals or insects. This huge moon was far outside the ring system.

While the view of the gas giant was spectacular, the moon didn’t really look like a moon. From space it was difficult to determine size so as they approached the moon it looked like a regular planet with no visible oceans. There were no visible features other than a blotchy brown/green surface.

“They have a space elevator?” Erin asked in surprise as the Empress Olivia started orbiting the moon. Everybody else on the bridge was trying to see more of the huge and utterly spectacular gas giant overhead when a regular double wheel space station came into view around the curvature of the moon. What caught Erin’s eye was the reflection of a space elevator cable connected to the middle of a kilometer-long central shaft, with the two rotating wheels on either side of the cable and the central shaft at right angles to the cable.

“It is actually the first space elevator ever built,” Ana explained as she used Jason to anchor herself. “When they wanted to try and use the anti-gravity crystals to support a cable, they first experimented here since the geosynchronous orbit of the moon is only twelve thousand kilometers from the surface, as compared to the thirty thousand kilometers of Secundus. We would never have been able to pay for a space elevator otherwise.”

While she was talking, she moved even closer to Jason until he found her plastered against him, and her face inches from his. Then she gave him a quick kiss on the lips before moving a bit away. He glanced at her in confusion, but she pretended as if the event never happened. She was not shy either.

Jason was not quite sure about Ana. She was his office manager for his imperial council office on Secundus, and he had already claimed her daughter, Lin, as his concubine, mostly because he liked both but more importantly because Lin sneaked into his bed one night. He discovered she was a virgin, so he kept her. He never discussed any kind of relationship with Ana, who was twenty years older than him and was the lover of the previous duke of Saturn, who had died two years earlier and left no heirs.

Jason noticed a pattern. The ship’s imperial call sign was only given when they were about to dock at a space station, like when his shuttle wanted to dock at the Pleiades Prime Habitat, or when they approached the Glamor space station, and now here. He assumed the same when they docked to the Secundus moon. They were directed to dock on the long docking arm, close to the station wheel.

“Your Grace, you can relax,” Ron Bright said after the ship was securely docked. “I want to use a few marines to secure this arm of the station and check out the rest of the station before you disembark.” Jason knew that Ron could be a pain about Jason’s security, but it was far better to just endure it. Ana and Lin decided to go with Ron, to plan for Jason’s household to get down to the ducal palace in the one and only city on the moon.

“It’s true what Ana said, about this system not being able to afford a space elevator if it was not an experiment,” Maggie said as she studied her tablet. “The system has a huge amount of minerals but nearly nothing of gets mined. Most of their income is from farming, small-scale farming.”

“We might have to find out why they don’t mine minerals, and kick some ass,” Jason said. “Unless the people are not interested in buying the stuff.”

Ron and his advance team were back in half an hour, with Lin but minus Ana. Lin reported that Ana had talked to the station manager and then took the elevator down to the moon. Jason was surprised to see Lin wearing a colorful skirt, all in nature colors, that reached her feet. She had a long-sleeved jacket on as well. In her hands was a bundle of clothes.

“Unless you want to start a brand-new dress tradition, I would advise you to wear this, my husband,” Lin said as she gave a rather formal bow as she held the clothes out to Jason.

The bundle contained dark-gray pants made from a heavy woven material, a thinner long sleeve linen shirt, and a heavy coat that wrapped around his body and was tied with a wide linen belt. The coat reached halfway down his thighs with the front overlapping by fifty percent. The coat was decorated in the same earth colors as Lin’s skirt. She also had a sash with the same colors as his Saturn medallion.

“Where did you get this from?” Jason asked as he started changing.

“Mom had it made for you on Secundus after you became the new duke of Saturn,” Lin said. “It’s the traditional clothing worn by all men indigenous to the system. I’m wearing traditional women’s clothing.”

“Do all of us have to wear clothes like this?” Erin asked as Lin helped him wrap the coat and tie the belt.

“No, foreigners can wear what they want,” Lin said. “You are the duke of Saturn, so you get to follow the tradition.” Jason felt a bit awkward being the only one wearing that style, but all his women commented on him looking regal.

With Ron’s approval, Jason’s core family, meaning Erin, Nina, and a selected number of his senior concubines as well as all his body protectors and a squad of marines entered the space station. Since the space elevator was attached to the stationary shaft, Jason wrongly assumed they would just go straight to the elevator station, but Lin guided them down to the outer ring and to a grand foyer where they met with the station manager and his senior staff.

Since all jump gates and space stations belonged to the empire, meaning individual systems didn’t have to pay for the construction of a space station or the jump gate pair, the jump gates and space stations were under the protection and control of the navy and marine corps. The group welcoming Jason and Erin consisted of a navy lieutenant commander and an imperial marine lieutenant.

“Welcome to Saturn, Your Grace,” the lieutenant commander said as he and the marine lieutenant both saluted him. “I am Lieutenant Commander Pierre Bronson. This is the Lieutenant William Bronson, my brother and the commanding officer of the Imperial Marine detachment in the Saturn system.”

“Let me guess,” Jason responded as he shook hands with the two officers. “You two like this system and would like to stay here after your time is up?” The two gave each other a mildly embarrassed look and then nodded at the same time.

“Having reached the rank of lieutenant commander in charge of a space station, I don’t see myself getting promoted anytime soon. This is as high as I can go, and to settle here is actually not bad.” Pierre Bronson said.

“Having a space elevator also means it is quite easy to go home on weekends, Your Grace,” William Bronson added.

“How many marines do you have here, lieutenant?” Jason asked.

“Saturn, the system, is seen as a kind of backwater posting, Your Grace,” William Bronson replied. “I have half a platoon here, all marines who are getting near the end of their ten years’ service. Your arrival just tripled the number of marines in the system.”

“He is commanding double the number of people that I am commanding, Your Grace,” Pierre Bronson added. “Besides the station, I also have two navy shuttles. The gate-keeping frigate obviously does not fall under my jurisdiction, but they are ready to assist if we ever needed them.”

“I should warn you, if pirates ever enter this system, that frigate would make a lot of noise but would not chase the pirates around; their primary task is to protect the gate,” Jason said.

“He is speaking from personal experience.” Shelly added. “Your new duke used to be a marine, the only senior nobleman with a blood line on his pants as far as I know,” Jason felt a bit awkward as the two officers gave him surprised looks. A quick glance at Shelly reminded him that both she and Carmen still had a huge hero worship for him.

“Your Grace,” Ron Bright said next to Jason. “Feel free to explore this station for a while. We sent half the platoon down in the elevator already, to prepare for your arrival in the city. The next elevator car will be available in about two hours’ time.”

“My Chief of Security has spoken,” Jason teased Ron. Ron did not react.

Jason did get a guided tour of the space station, which ended up in the space elevator’s top control room just as the elevator car made the climb for the last few kilometers before docking with the station shaft. The tour took most of the two hours because everybody on the station realized there was a new duke and he was on the station. The marines and body protectors had to form a tight circle around Jason. The relatively small crowd of off-world merchants and admin staff nearly became uncontrollable just before Jason, Erin, and Nina were escorted onto the elevator car. Everybody was waving and shouting, welcoming them to Saturn.

“I never thought I would even become a countess, let alone have crowds of people reacting like this,” Nina commented when the elevator started its hour-long journey down the cable.

“A countess who is still a virgin,” Erin teased Nina, who blushed and sneaked a look at Jason.

As they got lower, Jason finally realized that the moon, which looked like a planet from the space station, was much smaller because the horizon was much closer than on Secundus. During the last four thousand meters Jason also realized that there were no mountains. The cable seemed to be terminating at the moon’s equator with a bunch of concentric circles radiating out from that point.

“There is a lot of water here, but nearly none of it on the surface,” Lin explained. “Mom should have been here to explain it, I was not even born here.”

The elevator car slowed and entered a huge domed building through a sizable opening at its apex. The inside was a single huge cavity like the lower elevator terminal on Secundus. They had a grand view of the floor of the dome, which had a schematic, obviously not to scale, of the gas giant and its magnificent rings, with a few moons outside the rings, laid out in colored tiles.

Jason had no idea how busy the hall would usually be because as the car slowed even more as it approached the floor, he saw a large delegation of people waiting for them. The first thing he noticed about the delegation was that they all wore clothing similar to what he and Lin were wearing. The colors and patterns seemed to be by individual taste since none of the color patterns matched. Only three of the older males had sashes on. From the color combinations on the sashes, he instantly figured out he was facing a viscount and two barons.

“You should have a regent, like a steward, to act as your Saturn aide, but the last ducal regent retired years ago,” Lin whispered in Jason’s ear as Ana stepped out from the crowd and came towards Jason. Other than his entire crew of body protectors forming a half-moon behind him and Lin at his left elbow, everybody else were still on the elevator car, watching the proceedings. “I guess Mom decided to fulfill the role of ducal steward.”

“Duke Jason of Saturn, Earl of House Taurus, Earl of House Scorpius, Viscount Moorefield of Grendel, welcome home, Your Grace,” Ana announced as she curtsied to Jason. Then the entire delegation, a group of about thirty people of both sexes and all ages, all bowed.

“Thank you, Ana Mandria,” Jason said as he gave her a smile.

“Your Grace, here to welcome you is Viscount Per of Tethys, Baron Cal of Rhea, chairman of the council of barons, and Baron Der of Hyperion, senior baron on the council,” Ana said as she turned ninety degrees so she could face Jason and the three men facing him.

The three senior noblemen seemed friendly enough, and curious enough as they shook hands with Jason. Lin stayed behind his left shoulder, close enough to whisper in his ear, while Ana fell in on his right, close enough for their hands to accidentally touch as they moved. The senior nobleman, Viscount Per (sounding like pear) then introduced Jason to the rest of the delegation which consisted of the entire council of barons and their heirs. Some of them had their regents with them and introduced them as well. Several of the barons had their wives, or eldest daughters with them.

Then Jason introduced Erin and Nina as his countesses to the group. If any of them found it weird that their new duke had two countesses as wives, none of them blinked an eyelid in response. Their welcoming smiles got even bigger when Jason introduced all his concubines to the group.

“Your palace is ready, Your Grace,” Ana said once the formal greetings were done. Everybody in the delegation just stood back and then formed an honor guard lining the way to the grand entrance of the dome. “It is within walking distance, and the streets are lined with people all wanting to see you. A hovercraft will take the others to the palace.”

“I will walk with the duke,” Shelly said.

“The marines will form an outer barrier on either side of you with the body protectors forming an inner barrier,” Ron declared.

Outside the dome Jason realized why the traditional clothing of the Saturn people was so thick and heavy. There was a cold wind blowing. The sky was pale blue with the bulk of the colorful gas giant filling a full third of the sky directly overhead. The sun was just below the gas giant. The elevator dome was surrounded by a park with trees, shrubs and water features everywhere.

Straight ahead was a grand avenue wide enough to land two marine shuttles next to each other. The avenue disappeared over the horizon. Every single building was three levels high. Most of the buildings lining the avenue were shops but not all of them had display windows.

It started as a murmur which grew to a low but persistent hum as Jason, flanked by two rows of marines on the outside and his four body protectors surrounding him. Ana, Lin, and Shelly were right behind him and to the side as they formed an uneven V-shape behind him. When Jason and his group got to the start of the avenue, the people near them started applauding as the humming increased in volume.

“They are pleased,” Ana commented. “The last time there was such a gathering was when the previous duke replaced his sire but then they didn’t hum. Humming is a sign of respect and honor, like one would hum in agreement when somebody says something you agree with.”

“These people don’t know me,” Jason muttered. “How would they know if I’m a descent sort?” There was no response but after a few seconds Lin giggled softly. Jason glanced over his shoulder to see her looking at her mother. A quick glance over his other shoulder gave him the idea that Ana looked slightly guilty.

“Mom must have informed the people about their new duke before we even left Secundus,” Lin said. Ana didn’t respond.

There were drainage ditches with water lining the wide avenue. There were fishes swimming along the canals. The canals were about a meter wide and maybe that deep. The fishes were bright orange, white, and yellow in color, like the koi back at House Taurus but with longer narrower bodies and elaborate fins. They seemed quite tame and relaxed.

The people kept cheering, clapping, and waving at them as they walked. The hum rose and faded with intervals but never went away. Jason waved back and smiled. He was not used to crowds and from Ron’s facial expression at the start he got the idea that the crowds made Ron nervous as well. Ron seemed to relax after a while when the crowd kept their distance even with no barriers separating them. When Ron asked Jason if any of his wands were reacting to the crowd, Jason admitted that there was no reaction.

The number of people has grown, and the hum got louder. The ever-present canals were now in the middle of the center-divide as well as on either side of the wide avenue and were now two meters wide but the same depth as before. This canal was more decorative, having little islands and pedestrian bridges across it.

On the left side there was a park with huge trees and walkways. On the right was a large circular structure, set some distance back from the side of the road. The space between the side of the road and the grand front entrance of the structure was covered with lawn, paved walkways and water features.

“What, no barrier?” Ron muttered as they approached the circular building. Jason glanced back to see that the crowd, several thousand people, had moved forward and were filling both lanes of the road but nobody had set foot on the driveway or the garden on the inside of the canal along the edge of the road.

“This is the duke’s palace and as such belongs to the people of Saturn,” Ana responded. “They might not always like the duke, but they are very proud of their city, their buildings, and their unique neighbor, the gas giant. Nobody will invade the privacy of the duke. The marine guards usually keep a low profile and patrol the inside of the palace.”

By the time they got to the palace entrance, the sun was near the horizon, with the gas giant’s sun ward edge the same distance from the sun as it was when they first exited the dome. The days on the moon were obviously shorter than on most habitable planets. Jason could feel that the temperature also dropped while the cold wind was still blowing at the same speed.

Just inside the entrance, Jason’s security crew encountered a new bunch of faces. A section of imperial marines, faces that Jason has not seen before and thus must belong to the local half platoon, formed an honor guard. The sergeant in charge saluted Jason and then approached Greg.

Ana walked up to the civilian group standing in two neat rows at the back of the large entrance hall and softly talked to one of the females. Jason was glad to be out of the cold wind as he studied the group looking back at him. There was a dozen of them of which four were male. The males were all young, in their early twenties, while the females looked to be aged between twenty and forty. Then Ana turned, came to stand next to Jason and repeated the introduction she gave outside the dome.

“Duke Jason of Saturn, Earl of House Taurus, Earl of House Scorpius, Viscount Moorefield of Grendel, welcome home, Your Grace,” Ana repeated. Then she introduced the group in front of Jason, the housekeeping staff of the ducal palace. Jason tried to memorize the name of the chief housekeeper, San Aden, a lady in her forties who could have been Ana’s sister if one looked quickly. By the time he focused on the next female, Ana was already naming another female. The four males turned out to be the gardeners and fish keepers.

“San Aden, I suggest you show the duke’s ladies to the living area and their suites,” Ana said to the chief housekeeper. “I want to have a discussion with the duke in the library. Come fetch us when you are done showing the ladies around.”

Ana seemed to know the palace and had no problem leading Jason and his security crew to the large and well-stocked library. Lin followed while Greg received his own tour of the place from the marine sergeant. The library had huge windows looking out the front. As Jason looked out the windows, he noticed that it was already dark outside. Well, the sun had set. There was nobody on the streets. The only light outside came from the sun’s reflection off the gas giant.

“This is where you need a regent to tell you what is going on, what problems there are, and what needed to be done first, Your Grace,” Ana said. “It will have to be a local, a male, who will report to you and need not be a nobleman. If it’s a commoner, you can declare the regent to be a knight after a suitable time in service. Everybody on the council of barons is waiting for you to make that appointment first.”

“Ana, you have been the office manager of the duke of Saturn for a long time,” Jason said. “Are you happy in that position?” he asked. Her eyes grew wide in surprise at his question.

“Very much, Your Grace,” she said. “I love serving under you, especially since you took my daughter as your concubine. I hope to serve you for a long time to come.” Jason could see his question bothered her a bit.

“I think it is time for a promotion,” Jason said. “Shelly is my ever-present chief of staff, for House Taurus. Currently the entire House Taurus is here. You do not fall under Shelly since you and Lin are not part of House Taurus. If I need more staff, then I would like you to find, interview, and hire them. I hereby appoint you as my Chief of Staff for all matters relating to Saturn. Your first task would be to identify a suitable regent. I will hire whom you have selected. He will report to me but fall under you.”

“I..., I don’t know what to say, Your Grace,” Ana said.

“Say you accept,” Jason said as he put his hands on her shoulders.

“I accept, Your Grace,” Ana said as a huge smile broke out on her face. Then she hugged Jason as she pressed her face against his chest.

Over the next hour Jason learned more about his dukedom. The moon orbited the gas giant, which in turn orbited the sun. While the moon, officially named Calypso, had a breathable atmosphere, it was not the case when the first people set foot on it just over a thousand years earlier. The moon also has no surface water but has a large quantity of fresh water right under the surface. The numerous canals, some of which were like large rivers, were also linked to each other via underground rivers.

“The canals in the city and the farmland actually drain the excess water so that we have more dry ground to build on,” Ana explained. “Farmers need to excavate a pond or small lake on their land before they can plant crops.”
