“I need to go show my face on Pleiades Prime Habitat to please a judge,” Jason said to Commodore Terrance as his party was being seen off by the chief of naval operations. “Vitelli is being summoned to appear before the Imperial Council. I should be back by that time.”
“We can keep the crew of the Lisbon under wraps until Vitelli is not running JAG anymore,” Terrance responded. “I can just imagine the uproar when the parents of those girls find out what happened to them.”
“I still cannot figure out how I suddenly became a major,” Soria muttered as she and Carmen floated around the cabin of the shuttle. The luxury seats were ideal for high acceleration lift-off but most of the time after lift-off was spent in free-fall, so everybody including the two pilots were floating around the cabin. Jason was trying to take a nap, so he and Greg had anchored themselves to the bulkhead with some cargo netting, like what the squad of marines were doing in the back of the shuttle, when Soria, Carmen, and Lin floated close to where Jason was dozing.
“Lisa said your new boss did it,” Carmen said with a cute giggle. Jason opened his one eye slightly and noticed the three girls were floating close to him with their heads together and their bodies spread out like a three-point star. Shelly and the two female pilots were having a similar chat session near the cockpit hatch. The group near Jason were not looking at him so he closed his eyes and relaxed.
“But how?” Soria wanted to know.
“It should be relatively easy,” Lin said. “Being a member of the Imperial Council means he has a huge amount of power. You should ask him what his medallion number is.”
“Number?” Carmen asked.
“Each member of the council has a special medallion identifying them as both a duke and a member of the imperial council,” Lin explained. “Back when humans first arrived here, nearly fifteen hundred years ago, when they formed the first Imperial Council, the duke of Atlas was the senior most duke. His domain covers all the habitats in the system excluding the two planets, Secundus and Regulus. The dukes of Graceland, Greenland, and Ashland were the next three dukes, in order that the land masses were colonized and developed. The fifth duke was the duke of Saturn since it was the first solar system that was settled after Pleiades Prime. The first duke is always the chairman of the council. Each of them has a medallion with a seniority number on.”
“So, Lord Jason’s medallion number should be number five,” Soria guessed.
“When the last duke of Saturn was still alive, he had a number seven and the Scales of Justice on the back of his medallion.” Lin said. “I have not seen if Lord Jason got that medal or a new one. He is the duke of Saturn, but he is also the Special Imperial Envoy.” Jason was listening to the girls but kept his eyes closed. The sudden silence nearly got him to open is eyes.
“Do you think he is asleep?” Soria whispered. “Maybe we can get Lisa to sneak a look at his medallion.”
“He has three,” Carmen said softly.
“Three?!” Soria asked in surprise.
“He is Earl Jason Taurus, head of House Taurus,” Carmen explained. “He is also the heir to the duke of Grendel, the only remaining grandson of the old duke, which makes him Viscount Moorefield. Then he is also Duke of Saturn, and member of the Imperial Council, all major titles.”
“You are correct, they are all separate,” Soria said in surprise.
“He got married to the daughter of the duke of Atlas a few days ago,” Carmen gossiped. “Erin is now a countess because of that Saturn law, she cannot be the duchess of Saturn.”
“I don’t think she cares,” Lin said. “I think she is so madly in love with him that her title doesn’t matter to her. And he is very gentle and a nice guy as well.” The girls drifted away as Jason managed to slumber on.
“Lord Jason!” Jason woke up as somebody gently shook his shoulder. He opened his eyes to find the shuttle pilot looking at him.
“Hey,” Jason said as he stretched himself and, in the process, got tangled up even more in the netting he had wrapped around himself. That caused the pilot to giggle.
“Sorry to wake you, Your Grace,” the pilot, Gloria Segar, said as she turned herself to orientate herself with his new position. “We are about to enter Pleiades Prime final approach. That means we will be maneuvering so it might be better if you are buckled into your seat, unless you want to ride up in the cockpit so you can see better.”
“Can we sit up there as well?” Carmen asked as she pulled the netting off Jason.
“Ask the pilot,” Jason said as he floated free of the netting. Segar looked startled as she turned to face Jason.
“Sure, you can,” she said to Carmen. “It’s not often that a duke defers us in such matters. They usually either demand or assume they can do as they please. It is embarrassing if we have to get firm with a baron or even a senior officer because they want to float around while we are maneuvering.”
“Ah, either Elena or I have to stay close to Lord Jason,” Sam commented when she followed Jason into the cockpit and found that Lisa, Carmen, Shelley, and Lin already occupied the other seats. Jason grabbed Sam’s belt and pulled her down onto his lap. She gave him a look but didn’t fight him and then she settled down after he wrapped the webbing around them. Lisa was near the hatch and invited Elena to sit on her lap.
“I flew around a lot in the Electra but never on the bridge,” Lisa commented.
“Wow, is that the space habitat?” Lin asked as she pointed to a dark shape that slowly rotated into view. The shape looked like a short fat burning cigar, a dark shaft with a bright shiny tip. The co-pilot flipped a switch so they could hear the flight control center communication over the cockpit speakers.
“Freighter Red Sparrow, no line jumping. Hold your position. There is a lot of traffic trying to dock today,” the voice over the speaker said. “I will state this again. The current order of approach is..., “ and then the voice rattled off a ships’ names and numbers. “Any newcomers?”
“Marine Two requesting a secure docking bay,” The pilot said into her microphone with her words being repeated over the cockpit speakers.
“Secure docking bays are scares right now” the voice said. “Wait, say your call-sign again please.”
“Marine Two, requesting a secure docking bay,” the pilot repeated in a slow clear voice over the radio as she looked at her co-pilot, and winked. The co-pilot giggled softly. “Always wanted to have that reaction,” The pilot said.
“I thought I heard that, “ the voice said. “Would your primary be on a special mission today?”
“Marine Two, our mission is classified,” the pilot said over the radio.
“Obviously, with such a low number. Please stand by, “ the voice responded.
“What does that mean?” Lin asked. “Why do they react so weirdly about the call sign?”
“When the emperor travels, the ship he is on always has the call sign ‘Navy One’,” Segar explained. “The ‘Two’ in our call sign indicates the second highest person in the empire. It is Marine Two because his grace is a marine and this is a marine shuttle. The moment Duke Jason steps off the shuttle we become MS1-213.”
“So, they know not to let the emperor wait,” Lin responded as she gave Jason a wide-eyed look.
“Nobody is supposed to know when the emperor or his heir are onboard but having a call sign ending in anything lower than Ten will get you priority treatment.” Segar said.

PP control called back and pushed Jason’s shuttle to the front of the line and into an enclosed docking bay, which was at the center of the rotating structure. Jason was half surprised to not hear any snide comments from the other ships waiting to dock. At least Segar and Ramos didn’t dawdle and got out of the way quickly.
The habitat docking area consisted of four stationary pylons protruding from the axial point of the structure. Looking at the ships docked to the pylons; it was obvious that the ships and pylons were stationary while the massive structure was rotating. At the center between the pylons was what looked like a small hole in the center point of the structure. As the shuttle approached the hole, Jason realized the hole was large enough for a cargo ship to enter.
The hole was huge but inside was an even bigger cavity with four docks. Two cargo ships were docked there. The shuttle drifted past the cavity to a small craft docking area. The dock where the pilots were guided to was like but much smaller than the enclosed docks at the navy space station. Once the shuttle was inside, the massive doors closed.
Jason’s marines exited the shuttle first, and then Ron and Steve followed them. When Jason was finally allowed to exit, he was met by a civilian as well as another squad of marines.
“Your Grace, I am Emmert Ross,” the civilian introduced himself. “I work for the Imperial Protocol Service and have been assigned to be your guide while you are on the station. I will lead you and your party to suitable quarters for your stay.” Jason just nodded as Greg and the marines floated in a circle around him and the females. Ross led the way to an elevator which took them down to near the outer skin of the station, where the gravity was eighty percent normal.
“This place is amazing,” Jason commented as they walked out of the elevator into a wide passageway. The view outside the passageway looked like a regular sunny day.
“The station consists of the shell of a nickel-iron asteroid that is orbiting the sun,” Ross explained as he led the way towards the sunlight. “Humanity arrived in the Pleiades cluster centuries ago on the original colony ship, also a hollowed-out asteroid. When they found a similar asteroid here, they copied the structural design and anchored the ship to the end of this new habitat, making it one very long and thin structure. They started spinning the whole thing and it has been spinning ever since as it orbited the sun. Once every ten years they fire a few shuttle engines to keep the rotation constant. Over time they added more asteroids until we now have the current space station that is about eight kilometers long and has a diameter of about two kilometers. It is the biggest space station in the cluster and acts as the economic and industrial center for the whole cluster. Between this station and all the other inhabited asteroids orbiting the sun there are more people living here than on both Secundus and the entire Saturn system combined.”
As they exited the passageway, the view took Jason’s breath away. The space was like the first cavity of the Sarina, except this cavity was huge. Ross stated that this cavity was four hundred meters wide and a kilometer in diameter. Other cavities were a bit bigger.
They entered the cavity from what looked like a ten-story building with windows and balconies in concentric circles around the center. The far side of the cavity consisted of a similar wall full of windows and balconies. In front of them was a plaza with gardens on either side, curving up to show several dense forest-like gardens. They could not see straight up, the numerous sun lamps on the axis were blinding them, but what they could see of the garden curving overhead was more than a kilometer above.
The place gave the impression of a high-class shopping plaza with a relaxing atmosphere. There were a few small cafes around with outdoor seating as well as some patches of lawn surrounded by pathways and flower gardens. There were some people around but not many and most of them seemed to be women with young children.
“There are four of these garden cavities all along the station” Ross explained as he led them spin-wards. “This one, and the associated living quarters, are where the station management as well as the business owners live. Most large companies and corporations in the system maintain a presence here so besides having an office somewhere on the station they also have living quarters here, if they can afford it. A suite large enough for your party has been reserved in the Clarion Hotel just up ahead, sorry about the pun.”
The Clarion looked surprisingly normal. The facade and the interior looked like a classy hotel and reception area in any large city. In the reception area they were met by a distinguished-looking gentleman in a tuxedo and three young ladies. The gentleman headed straight for Jason, ignoring Ross and everybody else.
“Welcome to The Clarion, Your Grace,” the gentleman said as he bowed to Jason, just before Ron was about to block his path. “I am Roberts, head concierge. These ladies are my assistants. At least one of them will always be at your service, with all three of them assigned to your party. Do not hesitate to ask one of them to guide you anywhere in the entire habitat at any time. As is our practice with noble guests, your entire party will be housed here, including any servants and your personal marine contingent. If you follow me, I will escort you to your personal suite.”
With Roberts leading Jason down a corridor, one of the ladies conducted the marines. The other two young ladies fell in with Jason’s group. Greg and Ross both stayed with Jason and his group while the marines were following their cute guide down the same passageway. A short distance down the passageway they were shown into a doorway that was both secure and seemed to be airtight.
“This suite should have ample space for Your Grace as well as all or any of your companions. These ladies are professional hotel guides and will get everybody settled. Meals are served in each of the suites on demand at any hour.” Then the chief concierge bowed and backed out of the suite as one of the two young ladies showed Greg and Ross to their suite while Steve, Ron, and Elena inspected every nook and cranny of the suite. Sam stuck to Jason’s side while this was happening.
The suite had a lounge and dining room combination, a huge main bedroom with a bed large enough for a small crowd, and two secondary bedrooms. Both the other bedrooms were accessible through arches out of the main bedroom. Each bedroom had its own bathroom as well.
“Lord Jason has to present himself to Judge Leon in the imperial court in a few hours’ time,” Lisa told Ross when he and Greg came back from being showed where they were sleeping.
“It’s midday, local time,” Ross said. “Do you have a specific time to see the judge? It is unusual for the imperial judges to do much work in the afternoons.”
“Oh, I guess we have a timing difference,” Lisa said. “The judge wants to see Lord Jason at 9am on the fifth.”
“That is tomorrow morning,” Ross said. “Your Grace, while I have my own private quarters on the station, I will be residing here as well while you are here. If you want to go explore or meet with anybody, do not hesitate to tell me. Feel free to explore outside, this cavity is off-limits to anybody who does not live here so you can make use of the gardens and cafes here with no problem. If you want to explore the rest of the station, I will guide you. It might be best to have the marines escorting you outside this cavity.”
“Nobility are not welcome here?” Jason asked.
“The opposite, Your Grace,” Ross said. “Not many people around here have ever met a real nobleman, especially one with your rank. You might be too popular.”
“In other words, no unnecessary wandering around,” Jason muttered as he smiled at Ross. “Being escorted by a squad of marines will cause too much disruption.” Ross smiled back and shrugged.
“Your Grace, we can serve lunch here or you can have lunch at one of the cafes outside,” one of the young and quite pretty girls suggested.
She was different from the other two in the sense that while the other two never looked Jason in the eyes, this one had no problem looking at him when she talked to him. All three dressed to please, meaning short skirts and tight tops. All three got some glaring looks from Jason’s female group.
“Let’s go sit outside” Lisa said excitedly. She didn’t wait as she dragged Jason out of the suite.
Once Ross had left, the concierge who stayed behind introduced herself as Nina, then led them back into the garden cavity and to one of the open-air cafes. Her top consisted of a thin silky blouse that was tight enough to show that while she had boobs, they were more on the petite side of a B-cup. Her skirt was short enough to make Jason wonder how she managed to sit down without flashing everybody around. She was pure eye candy but something about her bothered him. He was relieved when she gave more attention to Lisa and Shelly instead of trying to flirt with him.
“I think cute Nina is more into girls than boys,” Carmen commented after a while. The tables at the cafe seated only four people so Jason shared a table with Sam, Shelly, and Carmen while Nina, Lisa, Lin, Soria, and Elena sat at the next tables.
Jason was not sure if he agreed. Nina seemed to be flirting and chatting with Soria and Lin, but she kept shooting him looks. The looks had little to do with sexual interest.
“I need to find a gym or someplace to exercise,” Jason commented as the group walked back to their suite after a light lunch. They took the long way, walking away from the entrance to the hotel. It was weirder to see the park-like plaza curve up and over. It was like being in the Sarina’s main habitat except this cavity was ten times the size and the people overhead were little specks.
“There is a gym down our passageway, past where the marines stay,” Lisa responded after Nina said something to her. Jason was getting increasingly intrigued and confused by Nina. She was not shy at all and even talked to Steve, Ron, and Greg but she mostly ignored Ross. She would joke and laugh out loud with the girls but when she talked to the males it was mostly just to answer questions or ask questions.
“Few of the hotel’s guests actually make use of this place,” Nina told Lisa as they all accompanied Jason into the large and well-equipped gym. “Permanent residents are required to spend at least two hours a day in a gym, to fight the effects of the lack of proper gravity.” All the girls were dressed in sexy gym wear, even Nina.
Jason missed running daily and could feel the effects of prolonged weightlessness as well, so really pushed himself. Sam and Lisa stuck it out the longest, with Nina coming second long after the others had stopped running.
Another surprise of the gym was that the bathroom was unisex. The toilets were fully enclosed cubicles, but the showers were typical gym showers, consisting of open shower stalls separated by low walls and no curtains. Jason was used to showering with his many girls, so he didn’t think twice about using the gym bathroom. It was only when he noticed that Shelly, Soria, Lin, and Nina tried hard not to stare at him while they also tried to hide behind their towels that he realized they were not used to sharing showers with males. Steve and Ron also exercised but they were dressed while Sam and Elena joined Jason, Lisa, and Carmen under the showers.
After a relaxed and relatively early evening meal inside the suite, Jason told his group that he was not going anywhere for the rest of the night so Greg could give the marines some free time. Carmen and Shelly decided to drag Soria with them to go explore the next cavity a mere kilometer away. Nina offered to play tour guide, telling the girls about that cavity being very much like a shopping mall belonging in a very large city.
“Are you sure you are not going to go somewhere, not even to the cafe out here?” Sam insisted on asking Jason.
“Sam, you and Elena can go,” Ron said as he rolled his eyes at the girls. “Steve and I will keep Lord Jason here with us. I’m just glad my wife is not here. She would have shopped me into bankruptcy,” Ron added with a chuckle.
“I guess it was a bit inconsiderate dragging you off on such short notice,” Jason said to Ron. “Lisa, who has the petty cash? Do we have any cash here?”
“We always have petty cash, my lord,” Lisa said as she leaned over him, giving him an enticing view down her blouse on purpose. All of them had grabbed only a few days’ worth of extra clothing when Jason decided to go hunt for Soria. “Greg carries it at the moment.”
“Greg, give each of the girls two hundred Credits,” Jason said. “It should suffice for now as a daily allowance for being away from home. You and Ron can either take the cash or get the allowance added to your regular pay.” Jason’s announcement resulted in some excited squeals from his concubines and Shelly. Lin was excited but managed to control herself.
“Missed us?” Lisa asked when she and Carmen came walking into the room after their shopping spree. Lin, Shelly, and Soria were on their heels, but they stopped and looked embarrassed when they realized Jason was dressed only in some boxers. “You three might as well get used to being around him,” she added when she saw the other three girls behaving as if they didn’t know what to do next. “You do not get to sleep with him, unless the countess invites you, but if you need to talk to him or he needs to talk to you while he is in the shower, you had better drop your shyness and just attend to him.”
“Besides, you sleep right there,” Carmen added as she pointed through the open archway towards the room next door. Lin was the first to relax and came forward, sitting on the edge of the bed as she shyly smiled at Jason. “Let us show you what we bought,” Carmen added as she started stripping.
Lisa was quick to follow Carmen’s example, but Soria and Shelly were too shy to strip in front of him while changing outfits. Lin was indecisive for a while but then she just turned her back when she changed. After the five girls had shown Jason what they bought, Lisa and Carmen stayed nude as they crawled onto the bed on either side of Jason. The other three excused themselves and went next door.
Jason was ready to seduce the two girls with him but since the connecting bedrooms had no doors, he was too shy to start anything. Carmen and Lisa had no such inhibitions and quickly rid Jason of his boxers and then proceeded to attack him. They seemed to have the trick of using both ends of him down to a fine art; they had him on his back with first Lisa impaling herself on him, while Carmen covered his face with her pussy, and after a while they would swap places in a seamless and well-choreographed way. Jason was a bit embarrassed when he noticed Lin, Soria, and Shelly peeking at them through the open doorway. The real puzzling part was when he noticed Nina’s face as well. He hadn’t even known she was still in the suite.
“What exactly are those three girls’ jobs around here?” Jason asked when he and his two concubines settled down. He had a head on each of his shoulders and a sexy thigh over his legs as they pressed themselves against him.
“Officially they are supposed to be hostesses and guides,” Lisa said sleepily. “Some of them like to take matters a bit too far with rich or important guests, except Nina is kind of only into girls.” She fell asleep right after saying that, so Jason was left contemplating what she meant by taking matters too far. He suspected she meant that the ladies would sleep with important visitors but that didn’t explain why Nina kept looking at him all afternoon.
While there is no law against prostitution, the practice is frowned upon. Girls who ended up pregnant from a man they didn’t know were borderline outcasts, similar to orphan male children. With the universal shortage of males, any male orphan is seen as suspect, either mentally or socially unsuitable to fit into the regular population.
Pleiades Prime Station was seen as the official capital of the entire cluster. While the emperor’s palace was on the planet Secundus in the same system, the entire bureaucratic system outside of the Marine Corps and the navy had offices on PPH as well as on Secundus. Upper-level government employees who worked on the habitat and could afford it, also had homes on Secundus.
When humans first arrived on the outskirts of that system, they contemplated settling on Secundus and making it their new home. With the inherent difficulty of getting in and out of the planetary gravity well, they voted to stay in space. Thus, the mother ship was placed in a solar orbit and expanded to eventually become the Pleiades Prime Habitat, the new capital of humans in the Pleiades cluster.
Once technological advances allowed them to construct the first space elevator, using a conveniently located small moon in a natural near geosynchronous orbit around Secundus and the newly discovered ability of a crystal that generated an anti-gravity effect and thus allowed them to use a cable that didn’t need to support its own massive weight, traveling in and out of the gravity well became much easier, but by that time PPH has grown to the point where it had a life of its own. It stayed the capitol of the system and later the capitol of the cluster once jump gate technology became a reality, and humans could explore and colonize other systems in the cluster.
Traveling from system to system became an easy and safe activity, provided there was an origin and destination jump gate pair, constructed from matching sets of crystals. Getting to the destination jump gate to a new system took time. The first interstellar jump gate, the gate in the Saturn system, two light years away, using an unmanned spaceship, took forty years, but once there, traveling to Saturn system took a couple of weeks, mostly to get to the jump gate and from the other jump gate to the moon Callisto.
Getting to the next system beyond Saturn meant starting at Saturn. Placing an active jump gate on a spaceship meant the crew could leave the ship via the jump gate and only return every couple of decades to check up on the ship and do in-flight refueling. By removing the crew, it was even possible to allow automated systems to accelerate the ship to levels humans could not endure. This high acceleration and correspondent deceleration without a crew onboard resulted in a much quicker and cheaper way of expanding the jump gate system throughout the cluster.
Extracts from the book ‘A Concise History of Humans in the Pleiades Cluster’
The next morning after using the gym in private, Jason and his entourage were escorted to the middle part of the station, the location of the Imperial Supreme Court and the Imperial Communication Center, the office responsible for keeping communications open between the various inhabited systems. The Imperial Office as the court and communications office was called, had a single entrance point for visitors and staff members. Jason was escorted to a security checkpoint to one side of the classy reception area where visitors to the courts were gathering.
“Duke Jason of Saturn, Imperial Council member and Special Imperial Envoy,” Ross announced as he showed his ID badge to the two big marines standing in front of a closed blast door. The two marines barely moved a muscle as they scanned Jason’s entourage. Then a green light came on above the blast door and the door slid open to reveal another reception area beyond. The two marines stepped aside and saluted as Jason followed Ron and Sam through the doorway with the rest of his group following them.
“It is Lord Jason’s first visit,” Ross said to the court official who met them. “Can somebody show us the way to his chambers?” The official bowed and then led the way to a chamber nearly identical to the Imperial Council chambers inside the imperial palace. The main difference was the plants. While the plants in the imperial palace were all local to Secundus, the plants here were from all over the cluster. Jason was surprised to see his name on one of the doorways. Lin instantly took charge of the reception desk and activated the terminal before she gave Jason a happy smile.
“Imperial Judge Leon is requesting to see you in his chambers, Your Grace,” Lin announced. Jason noticed Soria’s eyes grew big as Lin mentioned the judge by name.
“Had a run in with the judge in the past?” Jason asked.
“He is my uncle,” Soria said. “He is the reason I became a lawyer.”
The chambers of the resident imperial judges were right next to the chambers of the Imperial Council. Jason was led into a wide brightly lit corridor with thick carpets on the floor and container plants lining the walls. From the main entrance into the chambers of the Imperial Council they only walked straight across the corridor and entered the judges’ chambers. The layout was similar but slightly smaller than the council chambers. There also seemed to be offices for twelve judges. Jason was shown into the doorway with ‘Sir Anton Leon, Supreme Court Judge of the Pleiades Empire’ on it.
