Chapter 5

I helped Mabel make dinner and I was quite impressed with her ability in the kitchen. I considered myself a more than adequate cook, although just cooking for myself has made me prone to producing meals that are nutritious, yet quick and easy.

I expected Mabel to be the same way, with as busy as she usually is, yet she insisted even as she began making pasta sauce from scratch, that she never took shortcuts when cooking for her family if she could avoid it.

Even the spaghetti noodles were made with flour and eggs, left to rest, then fed through a machine she had. Mabel certainly didn’t cut any corners and the volume of food she made left me believing there’d be leftovers enough to last weeks.

That said, the spaghetti and garlic bread that was served rivaled the best I ever had and there was barely anything left at the end of the meal. Derek and Michael sure knew how to put away their food!

Derek had come in about 45 minutes before supper, opened a bottle of red wine and poured us each a glass. He then sat on a stool at the breakfast bar and casually carried on a conversation with both of us.

If only my viewers could all be as chatty as Derek! There were no uncomfortable silences and Derek himself brought up the broadcast we had planned for after our meal and the kids had gone to bed.

I didn’t usually broadcast at 10 o’clock at night - mostly I restricted my Clapper activities to early mornings around 6am. I’d found that to be my niche - I’d catch people before they began their day.

Mabel was more active than me but she too usually did early morning shows then early afternoon ones before her kids got home from school. I wasn’t sure an evening broadcast would work out or not. I reminded myself that was a good thing. If it all fell flat, it’d be in front of a new audience.

I was sure there’d likely be very few of my regular visitors online at that hour of the evening so I wouldn’t be greeting my normal followers when I went live.

Sure, I’d told everyone of the temporary change in my schedule and that I’d be doing a joint live at a different time. Then after Mabel and I set up our phones next to each other and sent the live notifications that evening, I was immediately humbled by the number of my regulars who turned up.

Each of our visitors greeted me encouragingly and the tips began to come in right away. They seemed genuinely excited to see their performer live with another performer.

It also quickly became evident that there had been a flaw in our plan. We’d only been live for a couple of minutes before I called for a change. Mabel turned off her own live and I pulled her into mine. Mabel’s followers had been typing their comments just as fast and furiously as mine. We couldn’t simultaneously answer each viewer without talking over each other.
